Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2006 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Inflorescence Blanc de Noirs La Parcelle Côte de Béchalin 92 Points

    France, Champagne

April 2013 disgorgement. Earthy, lemon, orange, pretty musk and florals. Starting to round out, but still retains the fruit brightness and vibrancy, especially with a nice hit of tangy acidity through the mid-palate. Very good length. Drinking really well now, but wouldn't hurt to see where it is in a couple more years.

  • 2013 Caduceus Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Velvet Slippers Club Luna Rosa Vineyard 89 Points

Blind. Light herb, lemon, pear, musk and flint - I thought this was Bordeaux blanc. A savory herbal note across the palate works well to give it interest, not particularly high in acid, this feels like it is ready to drink now. Actually found this enjoyable but the price is a bit of an issue locally.

  • 1982 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Vireuils Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Faded away, there are some elements that show what it once was but they are fleeting and sadly this was not worthwhile to drink.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Lime, mineral, slate, white florals and peach. A lovely mix of ripeness and mineral flow on the palate, there is precision even with the medium fruit weight. Kept improving in the glass, with layers of flavour and great presence.

Had some of the leftover bottle a couple of nights later and it was just as good if not better. It still showed really lifted floral notes and a light herb element in the background, along with flint, lime, orange and grapefruit. Palate is finely detailed, with plenty of fruit weight but still having focus. Awesome stuff.

  • 2015 Heidee Winery Zen no Sato 87 Points

    Japan, Chūbu, Ishikawa

Plum, bubblegum, raspberry and strawberry notes. Sour cherry on the palate, this does have a fair bit of sweetness, though it finishes reasonably clean. Definitely a good experience to try.

  • 2012 Caduceus Cellars Pinot Noir Velvet Slippers Club 89 Points

    USA, Arizona, Cochise County

Blind. Stalk, some blood, smoky and quite peppery notes on the nose. The palate is well restrained, while the fruit has some density, there is a stalky herbal note that works well. Has some character to it and I quite like the style. Pretty good stuff!

  • 2008 Azienda Agricola Valentini Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 88 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo

Blind. Pungent nose, peach, pear, ripe fruit but also under ripe and earthy elements at the same time. Reasonably lean on the palate, the length feels a touch short which is a shame as the rest of the wine is quite interesting. Still good.

  • 2014 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Château 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Very pretty nose with rose petals, cherry, some earthy spice, raspberry and slate. There is some upfront sweetness that gets quickly reined back in through the mid palate. Good length, this is immediately appealing and quite easy to drink. Has the structure to age over the medium term, but I wonder if it'll get better or if it will be just as good now when it is so lively.

  • 2006 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Mazy-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Blood and earth, meaty and graphite notes - quite good depth and interest on the nose. The palate is well constructed with good balance and flow. This was very enjoyable, but perhaps a little behind the other two Rousseau in the flight.

  • 2007 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Red cherry, roses, some smoke, light stems, graphite and redcurrant with some slate as well. The palate has immense structure, with plenty of fruit as well to maintain balance. This got significantly better the longer it was in the glass, opening further on both the nose and palate. Excellent.

  • 1996 Château La Tour Figeac 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Kirsch, blackcurrant. tobacco, stalks and charcoal. Very comfortable and controlled palate, with good acidity and the sweetness of the fruit intertwined well. Medium length, this is drinking near its peak but I'd expect it to hold for some time longer.

  • 2005 Albert Boxler Riesling Brand 92 Points

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

Light golden colour. Apple, pear, spice, orange peel, and lime - quite ripe but there is also quite a bit of that spice that keeps the interest level high. The palate has excellent acidity to match with the ripe fruit profile, this is still quite youthful and vibrant. Another 4-5 years would be interesting to see where its development goes.

  • 1976 Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Beerenauslese 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Orange coloured. Mint, orange, camphor, toast, ginger and spice - exotic and fascinating nose. The palate has beautiful balance, there is a feeling that it is light on its feet, even with the roundness from the aged fruit and the inherent sweetness. Finish fans out nicely, with really good persistence. This was in great condition, near the peak of its life.
