World Chardonnay Day 2024 - celebrated in style w this knockout Margaret River CH in the most recently released vintage (v20, 13.5% ABV) - all-in-balance, cold climate-fashionista, elegant & stealy, mirroring Chablis while retaining Oz charm. Pale straw-yellow, greenish reflections in the glass. Nose w readily available fresh pears, green apples, wet stones, distinct lemon & lime-drive, just a tad of barrel spice. Greenish palate, flavours echoing nose, minerality & smoke, seamless salinity, lingering 90s finish!

This needs a longer decant and/or more cellar time. It came across very Syrah-like. There was an underlying peppery vibe that I didn’t love. Overall this was a decent drinker, but it is not completely ready for prime time.

Entering a great drinking window.....

Decanted for 90 minutes then slow ox'd for 2 more hours as we enjoyed dinner and after. Rich, red/black fruit. Perfectly balanced tannins and acidity. This has always been and remains, my single go to source in Washington State for great Cabernet......91 at the pnp.....94-95 easily over the next 5-6 hours.

Two and a half hour decant. Very deep dark electric magenta color. Blackberry, blueberry, milk chocolate, dark raspberry thumbprint cookie, and subtle bay leaf. Dry, plush, fine velvety palate. Nice, bright, lingering acidity. Satiny tannins on the long finish.

This is more exciting than my notes make it sound. The fruit is elevated, there is terrific structure, and there’s an overall refinement that hard to articulate. Drinking awesome right now and likely going to be better in the next two years.

My first of a few in the cellar. Decanted one hour then back into the bottle to take to HMCs for dinner.

Nose of dark red cab fruit with some florals like violets and/or rose petals on it. Palate of slightly tart bright red fruit to start but after the hour decant it displays soft, integrated dark red fruit. Velour-like in its feel. Drank exceptionally well after the one hour decant and for about 2-3 hours overall before it started to back up and fall apart just a bit. 93 in hours 2-3, 90 with sort of one dimensional dark fruit by the end of the bottle later in the evening. I think this one, even though it's nicely balanced and integrated now with a short decant, begs for a couple more years of aging. Potential of 94, maybe 95 with time?

Pnp'd end enjoyed over 2 nights with a Repour stopper in the bottle. Notes are identical for both nights.

At the pnp, the wine is still quite tight with riveting acidity. The 14.9% alc feels much hotter in the back of the throat. The fruit is bright in feel and dark in color of fruit. The wine itself is a bit out of balance. 91-92 at the start.

Over 1-3 hours of air this one really fills out and calms down. The fruit grows darker, heavier and smoother. The remaining tannins sweeter and rounder. 94-95 then.

While rounding into shape now, these '18s still require some airtime to shine their best. Finished after 4-5 hours of air the second night and it lost all its sharp/harsh edge and settled in nicely. Much better balance to it then.

Same score as a year ago (95) and drinking very very well. Two hour decant and then drank over several hours, plus the last glass a few days later. All were great. This is a big Bevan wine but it shows up as it should and really ahead of the price point. Precise ripe fruit—boysenberries and blueberries, but also a hint of sweet pink grapefruit. Glad I did not have the bottle variation reported by others, all 3 of mine were fantastic.
Also, this had nothing left of what I call the ‘2018-ness’ which is that sense of a big wine with all the right components but they aren’t integrated. This was so smoothly integrated that while I was drinking it I forgot to reflect on the fact that it was a 2018. Gives me hope for my many other Napa ‘18’s that have been previously disappointing.

Tasted with Samantha - I believe all wines received about a 6 hour decant.

This was one of my favorite wines of the tasting! For some reason, this was like To Kalon on steroids...the fruit was darker and more intense (as was the dark chocolate) but not in an over-extracted way, just a more potent way (if that is even possible!) The fruit was accompanied with notes of dark potting soil, some licorice, some tar and some graphite, coupled with sweet tobacco and sweet toasted oak. Certainly delightful know, but has the balance to go for a few decades. Depending on how you like your wine, this is delicious and hedonistic now showing off the purity of fruit, or will be awesome later if you would like more complexity and some nice tertiary flavors to accompany the fruit. I cannot overstate that there is plenty of fruit and I would expect this wine to last longer than me (although I will be drinking all mine!) 96-96+ today, and a great wine!

Moderate golden in the glass. Nose is closed at first, but with a bit of air and warmth, it just explodes across the board. Notes of baked pineapple, baked nectarine, green apple, brioche, marzipan, molasses. Dessert-like. The palate delivers a very elegant and precise drink, with everything in perfect check. Somewhat young, but very approachable. Decades of life ahead, this will go to the stratosphere.

This was incredible, and reminded me of why I love Napa so much. What's more, although it isn't cheap, I think it represents great QPR and could easily improve with a cellar nap (although it doesn't need it; already very delicious.)

A real feat of balance between a rich, dark, concentrated style and surprisingly precise, chiseled structure. It doesn't have the kind of effortless perfume that comes with bottle age, but you could still smell it from feet away. Black, black fruit- blackberry compote, black cherry cola, vivid mocha (one of my fave notes in good Napa), browned butter, allspice, violet floral tones. Surprisingly racy and electric for the style, too- very polished and ultramodern. Not made in the classical earthy green style, but not even close to the early-2000s jammy style either. Just glorious. Easy 96+ with a little time...

Brought to VHR winery by MN so we could observe a side by side treatment of the same (relatively same, at least, both in terms of blocks and different vintage) grapes. I had this 2 years ago at Keplinger’s tasting room in Napa, and bought a bottle, and while I don’t recall DJ’s aeration ablutions, it was, for my palate, completely unready to drink, although highly promising. MN opened and slow ox’d this 6 hours before we got to the winery, and to say this needed that, and probably could have used 4x that, would be an understatement. Still, this wine has gone from potential greatness to being near the doorstep of it, as the black currants, plums and dark berries are far more apparent, joining very dark earth, spice, dark florals and rocky minerality in a wine that almost has an LPV tang at present. I’m not nearly as vintage wise as most of my CT friends, so I won’t be teaching any master classes on ‘19 vs. Bruce’s ‘21, but if I had both bottles within reach, I’d pop the cork on Bruce’s wine waaaay before this, as that wine’s wonderful silkiness currently contrasts favorably with the quality, even if much diminished in the past 2 years, of picking sharp objects out of your teeth and so much chewiness you may be checking to see if you’ve exceeded the FDA daily fiber requirement. Still, this reinforces my earlier thought that this will be an absolute banger, and, again, comparing the 2 bottles, at a solidly lower winery price, a very justifiable choice for wine spend dollars if just one bottle is possible. This could ultimately be the better wine of the 2, full stop, but it isn’t for me yet. 96 on this today with 98-99+ potential, so 97 seems a fair compromise. Huge thanks to MN here, as everywhere else, for his generosity.

I couldn't wait to try this as Realm's version of Farella is 100%. The label even got an upgrade! I don't usually comment on labels and unlike most, I prefer old school labels. That said, the artwork is very cool. Now onto the vino...

Like usual, very dark purple and black with strong smells. Blackberries, blueberries and plum. It starts off rich and creamy with vanilla notes and then the mineral attacks you in the middle and throughout the finish. The finish includes blackberry dark chocolate (think Kiva). Tannins are pronounced and need time -- either with a healthy decant or an aerator.

This is not really ready as of now. I tried a 1/2 glass from PnP and it tasted more like a barrel sample than the finished product. After 4 hours of decanting it and then pouring it through an aerator for the 1st glass, it was just awesome!

97+ with upside. I can only imagine what this will taste like in 3-5 years.

Fantastic early on, an easy 95 with great dark red velour-like mountain fruit. Absolutely great qpr here. Very fortunate to experience all 2021 Vice Versa wines blind along with CSIMM1161. The bottles had been open for about 5 hours and all the wines continued to get better with air. I managed to guess half of these correctly, but it’s quite a lift to distinguish them all. This vintage is more serious than 2019, with elevated tension, freshness, and overall complexity. These are not pop and pour, so if drinking in the next 10 years, I suggest a lot of decant time.

1. 2021 Platt Chardonnay: As usual, this wine spans the gap between old and new world styles. Lot of lemon driven character, it’s lively without being linear showing strikingly pure fruit and tons of freshness. 96

2. 2021 Platt Pinot: Very big and serious in this vintage with almost cab-like power. This is not a pinot for the faint of heart and will need some bottle time to come into its own. The more air it received, the more integrated it became, and by the finish its endless depth of flavor was complemented by more nuance and approachability. While it will not be mistaken for a Burgundy, it’s new world charm, focused power, and acidity to keep it crisp make for an excellent offering. 95

3. 2021 Beatrix: Nose is a bit muted with herbal and tobacco notes. Palate is firm displaying red cherries, tilled soil, and mineral driven flavors. Fresh and tight with a medium length finish, this will need some time to come into its own but should round into fine form. The vineyard quality is obvious throughout. 95

4. 2021 To Kalon: My favorite from the start. The power and elegance of this wine is dramatic and only gets more pronounced with time. Epically firm and concentrated, it displays unreal purity, freshness, and length. The class of the vineyard is on display here with its towering presence even amongst other great sites. 100

5. 2021 Cousins: This was more giving than the tightly wound To Kalon offerings. Gorgeous soaring aromatics give way to a generous palate of cherry fruit mixed with tobacco and earth driven flavors. Super well layered with regal tannins this is rich and very long. A wine you can get at a bit earlier than most of the other wines. 97

6. 2021 Spinning Plates: Yep, they snuck this one into the blind as well. Good thing I didn’t pick it as my favorite! As you might expect, this rides a little higher and is slightly rougher around the edges than most of the SVDs, but otherwise there isn’t a large drop-off in quality. It’s dark, fresh, well layered and showing significant tannic backbone at present. The 19 edition has more polish, but this displays more power and potential. 94

7. 2021 GIII: This presented more seriously than I expected from the GIII vineyard. Displays dark cherries, moss, integrated oak, hints of vanilla and a relatively austere mid-palate and finish. A very powerful wine with loads of potential. 96

8. 2021 LPV: This wine was showing the best of the group during the tasting. Everyone had it in their top 2-3 wines. I have a love/hate relationship with LPV, since it will be soaring and beautiful like it was during this tasting, and then shut down for a couple years. Just tremendous fruit intensity, with suave tight knit tannins, an endless core of chocolate and dank earth character with a massive, lingering finish. Can’t go wrong here. 98

9. 2021 Crane: Gorgeous fruit character with wonderful polish and incredible tannin management. This didn’t show the typical purple fruit with violets that comes with Crane, but had the sophistication, suave texture, and overall class to where I wasn’t super surprised it turned out to be Crane. More muted than LPV at this stage, we all know this will round into a near perfect wine. 98

10. 2021 Stelzner: Talk about different! The profile of this wine was about 180 degrees from all the others. We debated back and forth on whether it was Stelzner or Cousins. I ultimately picked Cousins based on half the grapes coming from Paso, but I was wrong! Meat drippings, char, burnt embers that are grainy and savory describe it. The fruit is black and very expessive, but you might think you are drinking a Syrah if you’re not paying attention. Lots of complexity and character, this wine was fun! 96

11. 2021 M7: Oh man, this wine fooled me at the beginning. It’s so utterly compact that I initially thought it didn’t have much to offer. By the second round tasting through the wines, I realized my error as this kept getting incrementally longer on the palate and let some of the amazing fruit quality peek out. It really makes sense that this is the top offering, since it is built for age and will slowly unfurl all those magnificent (yep, said it) layers over time. Epically pure with amazing precision, this may eventually eclipse To Kalon as my favorite. 99

12. 2021 Mysterons: Full bodied, with a generous core of mostly black fruit complimented by notes of tobacco and menthol, this displays a luxurious texture and serious power. More ready to drink than some of the other offerings, this may be a bottle you pop open while sitting on the Beckstoffer and M7 wines. 96

Splash decant. Very very deep magenta color. Dried cranberry, black plum, strawberry, black truffle, mushroom, and subtle rice pudding. Very smooth, dry palate, with fine acidity. Full, lower intensity tannins on the medium long finish.

Fun dinner at Torc in Napa with good wine friends (Matt and Kate). This was great. The only flaw was the back end weakness. I need to try longer decant and PNP to see if either helps.

Three hour decant. Deep dark magenta color. Lavender, plum, flat Dr. Pepper, and subtle burnt popcorn. Super dry, satiny palate. Firm, full tannins on the longish finish.

My score is just a placeholder. This needs time. Had this at the tasting lounge in downtown Napa.

Coravined. Very very deep purple magenta color. Similar nose to the ‘21, but with a bit more age and a distinct French silk pie note. Very smooth, dry palate, with nice, tongue coating acidity. Firm, lower intensity tannins on the longish finish.

This is classic Kirk Venge winemaking. Not quite as rich as Acuity and has an edge. Very good, but not great.

PNP. Very deep dark magenta color. Raspberry, blueberry, chocolate, lavender, and shortbread. Dry, ultra plush, full bodied palate, with fine acidity. Voluptuous tannins on the longish finish.

Very fun time tasting this with Mr. Toquette and his lovely wife. Another winner for the F-M lineup and already accessible.

Big, but not too big; ripe, but not too ripe, this wine is layered and luscious. Black fruits, savory spices, a catch up rush of mocha near the end. It has class and style and will make you feel happy and smart for buying it . . . and I will stop now because I am starting to sound like I am writing copy for a flash sale site.

Splash decant. Nearly opaque intense purplish magenta color. Barbecue brisket and blackberry pie sum this up quite nicely. Smooth, dry, dusty palate. Firm, medium intensity tannins on the medium long+ finish.

This is youthful, but one of the better Syrahs I’ve had recently. 100% Syrah from the Silver Eagle Vineyard.

Splash decant. Deep dark slightly hazy intense magenta color. Meaty, dark fruited (and slightly minty) nose that is currently holding back. Dry, velvety palate, with good acidity. Firm tannins on the longish finish.

This is completely different than the ‘19. It’s got great overall structure, although I’m not sure where this is going.

Splash decant. Deep dark intense magenta color. Powdered boysenberry, black plum, river rock, violet, and brown spice. Very dry, gritty palate, with nice, pixelated acidity. Satiny tannins on the longish finish.

This was on of the surprise highlights from my recent trip to Napa. Score might be even higher with a legit decant.

Thirty minutes in the glass before tasting. Very deep hazy ruby magenta color. Raspberry, roast beef, mushroom, and brown sugar. Very dry, smooth palate. Firm, lower intensity tannins on the medium finish. 40% Mourvèdre, 34% Grenache, 26% Syrah

This seemed off/reduced. The finish was surprisingly weak and the nose was diminutive. Assuming this is an off bottle and/or low point in this wine’s development.

Two hour slow ox, followed by a 90-minute decant. Deep, dark, yet intensely vibrant magenta color. Ripe black cherry, olive oil cake, wild strawberry, and Italian parsley. There are also background notes of lemon zest, baker’s chocolate, and mushroom. Smooth, dry, medium+ bodied palate. Firm tannins on the longish finish.

This is one of the better QPR bottlings made by Thomas Rivers Brown. Great complexity for under $100. It continued to improve over 45 minutes of drinking.
