Tuesday, December 12, 2023 - Had this with dinner at my friend Dick's house about 4 months ago and I am just catching up with TN. Called the winery and talked to Samantha before drinking and she said decant this 2 hours which I did. I think this could have used 4 hours. We drank this over an hour and it did continue to fill out so I wish I had given it more air.

This was dark fruited with blackberry, black currant, tobacco, spice rack, and a touch of earth with a long finish. This wine went incredibly well with a slow cooked beef roast. While this wine was very good it was a bit overmatched by a 2016 Realm Absurd. I felt the fruit from The Absurd had more depth and polish. In defense of the Vice Versa the Absurd had 3 more years in bottle.

I had drunk a barrel sample of the Vice Versa To Kalon 2 years previous to this and that had more depth and complexity then it did this night. Since drinking this wine 4 months ago I feel the 19's are headed towards a slumber so I would hold off on this bottle or give it a very long slow ox or decant.

12/20/2023 7:40:00 PM - I had the '19 Dr. Crane earlier this year and gave it a 96. These are very good, but I'm afraid way too pricey for me, now.

12/20/2023 8:54:00 PM - Mark this year I cut out all the lesser bottles as I have plenty of daily drinkers and only focused on my favorite producers (Vice Versa is my favorite) but bought much less. I also did a home remodel that ate a lot of my discretionary savings so I had to take a hard look at my spending and I definitely had/have to rein back my wine spending. I guess the good news is that 2022 isn't a great vintage and like you I won't pay the same or more for something when it is poorly made.

12/20/2023 9:12:00 PM - I'm cutting out most buying as of now. I just have too many assets tied up in it. My cellar is full and I've made some great purchases of some great wines that I hope to get around to drinking.....My last son was just married off last week. Carol just had a very successful back surgery and mine is setup for April. After that it's back to travelling abroad for us.....and sampling the wines of the countries we're visiting!

12/21/2023 1:01:00 PM - Congratulations on your sons marriage. My youngest son is 10-12 years younger than his brothers and is a sophomore at UCSD. So a couple more years of him on my dime. That is great news on a successful back surgery for your wife. I have a bad back with a herniated disc and a couple more bulging but am still holding off surgery for as long as I can.

Re: back surgery....don't put it off too long, more long term damage can be done. I am a physical therapist, I've seen it all in 40 years of practice. Best is to make sure they zero in on the problem disc or nerve root, then go about it with micro surgery. The less cutting, the better. The small Dremel like tools they have now, do wonders. Cheers, pal! Have a great Christmas.

12/21/2023 6:09:00 PM - Mark I was a Fire Captain for 34 years so I have spent a lot of time in PT. Had 3 shoulder surgeries (2 for frozen shoulder which I don't wish on my worst enemy), knee surgery, dislocated elbow, 2 ruptured discs in my neck and 1 in my back. Luckily I have no numbness in any of my limbs and nerve impingement in my back was minimal in 2023. I use only pro sport Doctors for my surgeries but I am convinced that your therapist is just as important. Luckily I have a great one.

12/21/2023 6:17:00 PM - Yeah, you fire guys take a beating.....much respect for you there, pal.

Glad you have good people to deal with. It's so important, even more so today when most PTs and surgeons are just mailing it in because of burnout, Covid stuff, insurance hassles, etc. In the immortal words of Liam Neeson in Taken, and with my best Albanian accent......'good luck'.

Ps, Ray.....I'm my own best patient...11 surgeries over the years, so the back thing coming up doesn't really phase me all that much. Hockey goalie, baseball pitcher, skier, scuba diver, in addition to 40 years of lifting/heaving with patients.....it all takes its toll, but you gotta live, you only get one chance!
