  • Late night Maison Dakota. Tasted blind. Drank in Grassl Cru.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of initial chocolate blast that fades off, then iron earth, dark minerals, dark red cherries, dark plums. Developing.
On the palate, dry, just about high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), resolving high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherries, dark plums, savoury masculine iron earth, dark minerals, lots of spices, some cassis. Very long grippy finish.
Very good quality. Masculine power and on the dark side. Well done for 2003 without being over-ripe.

  • Late night drinks @Derek s Dakota House. Tasted blind. Complexion of a warmer vintage / riper fruit definitely. Not stewed or cooked, just on the borderline. Big ball of cassis. Overachieves relative to reputation of vintage. The vintage character crowds out terroir a bit as it is displays no very obvious Vosne character.

  • Burgundy Dinner with Friends (The Bristol - Chicago IL): My first time trying this wine, and this is an impressive 2003. Clearly ripe with equal proportions of red and black cherry with savory five spice throughout. Firm tannins and brightening acidity to start, the tannins got a bit more assertive after the bottle had been open 2+ hours. Very good now.

  • Decanted 3 hours this was '03 in style with dark ripe fruits but also had decent balance and the tannin is still there but moving to the background. Not a showstopper of a wine but very pleasant representation of the 2003 vintage and might actually improve just a bit with time - but give it some serious air right now. A-

  • Usually not a fan of 03 red burg but this Grivot was very balanced with moderate acidity. Dark fruit, vosne spice and gentle oak. Drinking well. 90+
