Heater week; 3/8/2024-3/17/2024 (Chicago, IL): By all accounts, I should love the Faurie wines, but there's something about them I just don't get. They're too structural and often are missing any counterbalancing fruit. This was no exception -- leather, dust, and structure. The vintage's lighter fruit profile probably doesn't help.

Cossonay, Switzerland. Blind. Ruled out a Northern Rhone initially as the white pepper was not so obvious and the sweet fruit on the palate was a headfake. Very surprised upon reveal to see this was a 2004. Still very primary and undoubtedly a long life ahead. Bloodmeat definitely . My experience was very similar to ZACHB1125 note below. This is a super Hermitage that would more than hold its own with Chave and Sorrel.

Tons of primary fruit on the nose, more than expected for an 04 Rhone. Still has the peppery, floral notes but they're restrained. Some tomato skin and something a little more rich and savory (popcorn??). Blueberry and blackberry too.
Medium+ acidity and high tannins, the palate is wonderfully-balanced between primary and secondary notes. The wine is certainly youthful still, if not premature. Earthy, funky, leathery, baking spices notes are there, but are background to the plum, blueberry, and blackberry flavors. Wonderful now, will be even better in several years.

There’s a note of brett in the form of a band-aid smell that sits atop a complex nose of red fruits, violets, olives and ginseng. Medium-plus bodied, slightly viscous flow, olives and mineral and red fruits still quite tightly wound, sustained al dente tannins. Very savoury finish. Can handle further time in the cellar for further development.

Outstanding after a double decant. Drinking at peak with great balance and a lovely palate and a long and completely clean finish. Has time left but this bottle was not going anywhere better IMO. It was great.

First (I think?) Hermitage
