Wow! Not showing its 60 years--- bright ruby with almost no bricking, clear though a bit light. Nose full of earth, leather, some dark cherry, lavender, baking spice. Palate weight is a little bit lite. Tannins and acids fully resolved. Was that some truffle on the finish?! Finish is Med-. Wonderful Rioja demonstrating the value of aging these wines.

A Tasting of 1964 Gran Reserva Rioja and Even Older White Rioja! (Los Gatos, California): Ruby. Like the Bosconia, absolutely gorgeous spice and fruit forward nose. Medium weight, clay base, mouth coating and without any hard edges. Rich fruit, ground coffee, perfect acidity all classily integrated and weighted. My word, this is fantastic and clearly the red wine of the day. It was easily the highest rated of this flight, with 15 of 19 tasters having it as their first place wine. I cannot recall being this impressed with a Riojanas wine, much less having one blow away stiff competition as this bottle did.

The favorite among four very good 1964 Riojas tasted last evening by our expert panel. All four were sound, mature but with decades still in hand. This one had depth and complexity equal to a gran reserva from Gomez Cruzado which followed. Frankly shouted from the glass on pouring and never backed down. So fresh, with such clarity. Essence of dried cherries, broad on the palate, glowing on the finish. Wondering whether the 1982 and 2001 gran reserva editions of the Monte Real will ever reach this level. Some of us may be too old ever to find out.

Historically interesting but should have been put to bed a long time ago. Brownish, brick colour and smooth with plenty of leather and prunes but for me lacking in any enticing character; perhaps more for necrophiliacs...

Smooth and silky like a Burgundy with lovely earthy flavors along with notes of delicate cherries and rose blossoms. Not that complex but simply beautiful. At Penavic wine dinner atop 15 Hudson Yards.
