  • Had to pop and pour, which was unfortunate. Tight and tannic out of the gate, but still exceptional fruit. Last glass was the best, so I expect the next bottle, which I will treat better and decant, will score higher. Impressive 2017.

  • This took hours to open up and the changes were immense. After three hours red fruit appeared to mix with darker fruit notes and wood. It really improved with time. Given how bad 2017 was the fact that Roy was able to pull red fruit layers out of this wine is remarkable. This is not his best vintage but it’s very good nonetheless.

  • I had this with Roy while in Napa in February and gushed over it then. Bought a three pack and then found an extra in a Benchmark Bin Sale. Had to test my prior impressions. My prior impressions were wrong. This wine is even better than I remember—much better.

40 min decant and this was rolling. Still a bit young but a tannic backbone that helped deliver a winner front to back, tannins that said, hi we’re here, but just watching the show! Intense perfumed florals and Asian five spice on the nose and a fruit menagerie on the palate. I called this a baby Merus back in February and I stand by that comment today, indeed a compliment of the highest variety. Blackberry, blueberry, black currant, blackberry liquer, green bay leaf, black raspberry, hint of purple flowers.

The ‘12 has been my favorite Piper to date, this equals that one. Indeed an impressive wine in an off vintage, confirmed now twice by my palate.

Can age many years, but it’s in an open window now, so I say drink now … and later.

  • 2023 Napa; 2/5/2023-2/9/2023 (Napa with a connection in Houston): Pop and pour, very well developed for a ‘17. Explosive nose of floral notes, black currant and Asian five spice. Big on the palate, which has not caught up to the development on the nose, but this was definitely delicious, with additional blackberry notes carrying on to a 20-30 second finish. Moulds strutting its stuff right now in a big way. Bought a three pack.

  • Needed a few hours air to wake up then showed a terrific nose. Extraordinary flamboyant nose of boysenberry and black currants. A little cedar spice and flint. Palate is very concetrated with wonderful purity of ripe fruit. Tannins stick out a bit on the finish and are rather coarse. Lengthy finish. Excellent Napa cab here—maybe could still use a few years to integrate and soften.
Really improved with air. Has a more liquor like character to the fruit but the tannins softened and complexity seemed to deepen.
