  • First of a second lot of 3 purchased about 18 months ago ($38@). As noted in note around that time for a single bottle I’d previously purchased, this wine remains really young, and if it’s in its ideal drinking window, it’s only so with at least a couple of hours of air. On the pour, quite electric acidity and very lean fruit giving a more chablis than White Burg feel, but with the air, a bit less brightness and a tilt away from tart citrus toward lighter tropical fruit notes. In both instances, texturally very lean and flinty, which would have led me more likely to locate this in Burgundy than the Southern Hemisphere. Can be gainfully consumed now for its energy or held for a bit more complexity or balance, but one way or another, it will drink well for my palate for at least another 5 years, I suspect. 93-94 if scoring.

  • Richer than the estate bottling, less Chablis like and quite long.
    Delicious.

  • Clear, medium lemon colour. Clean, med+ intense aromas of lemon, struck match, toast, liquorice, gummy bears, cream, crisp apples, pineapple, vanilla and peach. Youthful aromas.
Dry, med+ acidity, medium bodied and medium alcohol.
Med+ flavours of flint, match, lemon, peach, toast, liquorice, light vanilla and cream. Medium finish. Not a big step up from the village-version, but presents more intensity on the palate. Drink or hold.

  • Certainly Chablis-like, but still distinctly from NZ. Lemon, lime, and grapefruit on the nose, along with flint, new rubber, grass, peach, a bit of hay, eucalyptus, white pepper, and yellow apple. Decanted half the bottle just to see what would happen as it seemed pretty closed. There was a noticeable shift towards the secondary notes: a lot of the brightness (unsurprisingly) fell off. I wouldn't say it improved, but it wasn't worse either - just different.

Palate is largely the same, with an intense and lasting lemon/bitter lemon note. The tropical flavors shine through a bit more as well - peach predominantly, with a touch of pineapple and coconut. Bitter lemon on the finish lasts for quite a while. Racy acidity, moderate body, noticeably high abv.

It lacks the elegance, complexity, and power of good Chablis, but for the price, it is excellent. Will buy again and again.
