Muscular and tannic for the vintage, also a bit of heat, but boy there's so much dark fruit stuffed into the 2017 Arione that it'll be worth the wait. Drink starting 2030.

2017 Giacomo Conterno Barolos (Chicago, IL): Aromatically high-toned, with primarily red fruit and a distinct herbal quality as well. The palate is relatively light, and because of that I don't think it holds its 15% alcohol as well as the other two in the lineup, at least right now. On the palate, you get a lot of primary, tart red cherry notes, and much less of the herbal notes on the nose. Obviously youthful tannins right now, but they aren't obtrusive. While this is clearly a good wine, it's definitely not at the level of the brilliant 2016.

The '17 Arione is a dark beast of a wine, reminding me a bit of the 2015 version. As far as 2017s go, this wine (along with the Francia) is as intense, concentrated, and age-worthy as it seems to get.
I found the nose to be very herbal with notes of sage, thyme, licorice, and lavender, alongside dark red cherry fruit, with orange peel adding a top note. On the palate, the wine was rich and medium-to-full bodied, with a wave of rich dark red fruit, herbal tones of sage and licorice, and blood orange. The combination of the very rich texture with a high level of acidity is striking, and the tannins are fine-grained but intense and in need of time to better integrate. The finish was long with savory, herbal and earth notes and orange peel.
This is an intense wine with a lot going on, in need of a long time in the cellar, with a very unique flavor profile leaning herbal/dark fruit/citrus. The first three vintages of Arione are fascinating. The 2017 reminds me more of the 2015 which has a dark and savory expression, while I found the 2016 to be a much 'prettier' wine with redder fruit tones / a more conventional Nebbiolo flavor profile.
94 today for me, but seems like there may be a few points of upside; this is such a unique wine I find it hard to assess at this stage.

Return to Piemonte!; 11/25/2021-12/4/2021 (Castello di Sinio, Alba, other various locations): Somewhat painfully we ordered this off of the restaurant list despite them having the 2016 at the same price. We were told this is the wine of the 2017 vintage and with those accolades you have to try the wine. Very good. From the beginning there is a structure which the best barolo have that some how seem to give one confidence the wine will continue to build but is sort of ok to still be drinking it. This wine was young. Time brought out a lot more floral notes. No decanting. Just in the bottle. Prob close to 2 hours. It never got close to peak, but itw was drinking very well.

Utregs Wijnhuis tasting Exclusief (Utregs Wijnhuis, Utrecht, NL): [Tasted blind] Light in color, floral, strawberry, forest strawberry, cranberry, tomato leaf, violets, rose petals, licorice. Medium+ acidity, high tannins, long finish. 93-94
Lovely Barolo, very, very young, but approachable. Will be better in 5-7 years. The wine was open for 36 hours
