Needed two hours for the mustiness to blow off, revealing a rich, layered, leathery, peppery beauty. Probably on the backside of the hill, but not by much. Lots of life left.

Deep brick red.
Aromas of cherry, cassis, hawthorn, chocolate, charcuterie, wet soil and autumn leaf.
Coarsely grained lively tannins. Blackcurrant acids and dark chocolate bitterness.
Palate of blackcurrant jam, cherry liqueur, juniper wood, tobacco, espresso and grilled steak. Hint of ink.
A mature, powerful yet elegant and utterly complex wine with sun-ripe fruit, bittersweet acidity, lovely chocolatey and smoky aromas and a great mineral finish. Drink within 10-15+ years. Tasted 2024.
Tasted alongside Jaboulet, chapelle, 1985 and the present wine is potent, presents riper and darker fruit and is as great as the matched wine. Bravo.

2023 Athens Wine Event; 12/8/2023-12/9/2023 (Athens, Greece): Tasted blind. Guessed hermitage but off bottle of it past its best.
The nose started exceptional but then tailed off and so did the wine and we feel this is a wine of great variability. We have had this 5 times in the last 15 years and we have not had a good bottle for some time. Back in 2008 and 2010 this was a magical wine but ever since we have had just average experiences and our fair share of bad bottles.
On the day this was shy and not singing some hints of direction but not really the level it should be. One should definitely be careful with bottle provenance and maybe stick to recently released ex chateau bottles only. 92 at best
