René Engel: The more I drank this the more I liked it, the vintage hotness combines so well with the terroir heat, but almost understated that it is disguised under the stunning fruit quality, a protective shield so to say. One of the most intellectual wines that transcend to be a contender for WOTN after enough air. 94-95

Rene Engel Dinner (Benoit Bistro, Manhattan): Slightly more brooding and rustic than the 02 drank side by side. Almost seems slightly more extracted. Can still use additional bottle age.

Extremely pleasing. Classic Engel that just a tad bit funky but in the best way. Very open nose with a lot of spice, minerals and red candy. The palate is silky with great acidity - red fruits, spices, some leesy notes. Great balance here of fruit and structure. This is in a great spot right now.

David’s 1999 Cote de Nuits (Lorne, London): Initially the same reductive bacon frazzle nose of the Girardin. With air this lightens and freshens. Really quite fine and elegant with a savoury quality to the floaty fruit. Very attractive though some might prefer a less waif like presentation. A significantly better bottle than one a decade ago which shared the floaty ethereal nose but fell apart soon after. ****

David's 1999 Côtes de Nuits 1er Cru, Village by Village Horizontal (Lorne Restaurant, London): This opens with a quince jelly sweetness that complements the sliced plums providing the fruit interest. There is some talcum powder too and some redcurrants. With time a hint of classy Montelimar nougat as well. Palate has more of the fruits above but doesn't quite deliver what the nose suggests. My second wine of the night.
