(Leoville-Las Cases) The 1982, which I have had once before at the same location and it was tight as a you know what. Tonight it was no different. What is up with this wine? Mute on the nose with hints of tobacco, earth and mineral but not much else and you had to really concentrate to smell that tobacco, earth and mineral. The palate was closed shut and only started to come out of its shell towards the end of the night and you could see hints of its greatness. Three years between me having this wine and it budged maybe an inch. This maybe outlive us all. I say ten years before it starts to strut its stuff.

(Chateau Leoville Las Cases) This was just young. Ungiving on the nose but all the stuff on the palate was there. Dark fruits, amazing levels of concentration, a long sneaky finish, noble tannins and the proper balance but this botttle showed particularly young and closed. Eh, it happens. Great wine but hold off for at least five more.

Again, consistent with my prior experience, the 82 LLC is fairly inconsistent. This bottle showed a lot of tertiary flavours while most of the fruit has faded.

2x halves. PnP. A tale of two halves, both from the same wooden case but behaving very differently.
First bottle - nose was not entirely clean, ever so slightly corked. Very young on the palate, robust and huge wine, years away from reaching the peak. Lively with noticeable acidity to balance out the tannins. (NR).
Second bottle - clean if rather subtle nose, ready now with tannins mostly softened, fairly linear over 2 hours lunch, never did fade or develop further, good but not great bottle, maybe a 94 pointer.

From a bottle in outstanding condition purchased about 30 years ago, this must be 1982 Léoville Las Cases at its best. And that is very, very good - but not great. Very deep garnet, no brown. Nicely if modestly fragrant of dark berry patch. Excellent concentration of cassis, blackberry and pomegranate. No fade over two hours. And yet at age 42 I am still waiting for subtlety, nuance and complexity, much less mystery. To enjoy greatly but not to love.
