| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 21 notes) | | | Tasted by collin on 10/7/2009: Primary and disjointed. Starts out with an over ripe note to it, but that integrates with decanting. Should obviously get better, just preferred the '05 Joguets I've had recently. (408 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 6/10/2009 & rated 89 points: Still very primary. A lot of cherries and red forest fruits. Good complexity. Give it 2 - 4 years of rest. (415 views) | | | Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 5/21/2009: Powerful, rich, great stuff. (408 views) | | | Tasted by LoireFan on 5/9/2009 & rated 91 points: Maybe 92 - the best bottle of Joguet I've had in such a long time. Wow! (433 views) | | | Tasted by whits on 4/5/2009 & rated 87 points: Old World aromas of smokey earth, leather, berry, good attack on the palate, cherries, soil, cedar, very dry on the finish, overall a dry red with more earth on the palate than fruit, I liked, tried this with vodka sauce macaroni and cheese and it worked just fine (475 views) | | | Tasted by nzinkgraf on 2/18/2009: French tasting (Waterford Wines Milwaukee): '03 was a hot year here, but led to some powerful fruit. this bottling is the oldest vines of the estate. Massive cab franc fruit aromatics, with a bit of sweet maize. Raspberry and currant. Floral palate and medium finish, with lingering raspberry. Very determined structure. after 4 hours a lean spicy green emerges from this wine. positively. (522 views) | | | Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 2/18/2009: The 80+ year old vines of the estate. Gripping nose of cabernet franc. Silky lush palate. Still tense on the back. Not yet quite into its own is my guess. I just opened it though. (562 views) | | | Tasted by Bandol on 11/7/2008 & rated 89 points: A little broccoli water on the nose but still really good. (616 views) | | | Tasted by Bandol on 7/15/2007 & rated 92 points: Old world, sous-bois, cherries, cola, smoke. Beautiful! (953 views) | | | Tasted by tcfishler on 6/1/2007 & rated 93 points: Saturated red. Huge strapping nose with rich, ripe, intoxicating currant fruit that draws my nose into the glass like the Death Star's tractor beam. Cedar, spice, a hint of brettanomyces-esque funk and the subtlest VA round out the aromas. My fiancee informs me this smells like "thanakha," a tree bark paste used for face painting in Burma. Anyway, this big boy of a Chinon is still closed up on the palate, where the fruit promised by the nose doesn't materialize. In its place are a lot of persistence and thickness, but no heaviness, even at a stated 14% ABV. Some suprisingly restrained tannin hits quite late. Obvious upside. (1107 views) | | | Tasted by bmarshall on 5/4/2007 & rated 92 points: Really, really nice wine. Dark ruby color. Dark fruits, cedar, cigar box and come minerals on the nose. Great structure on the palate - medium to full bodied with very fine tannins. This wine last last several more years. Tasted like a great, fine cigar with some black pepper, herbs and asian spice coming through clearly on the palate. Lingering, mouth coating finish. (1003 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 2/4/2007: Enjoyed at Restaurant Guy Savoy in Las Vegas paired with seared foi grax and artichoke and black truffle soup. Dark and smokey, interesting wine from Chinon area of Loire. (1163 views) | | | Tasted by jwwinec on 9/18/2006 & rated 91 points: Terrific richness and personality - even though this shows lots of fruit and herbs today, it still comes across as tightly wound and structured, with a tannic, mineral finish dominating the palate (especially compared to the other 2003 Joguets I tasted). I think this will rate a few points better with some time in the cellar. (1551 views) | | | Tasted by Paul-Richard on 9/12/2006 & rated 90 points: nose of smoke and violets, dark cherry, blackberry attack, new leather, green tea, dark chocolate finish. Medium body, balanced, integrated, dry, grippy tannins, lots of terroir, long finish. Gained weight with time. (1390 views) | | | Tasted by Richard Jennings on 8/4/2006 & rated 91 points: Tight nose with a hint of chocolate; tight, solid, tart plum palate; medium-plus finish 91+ pts. (333 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 7/7/2006: Slightly reluctant, though deep nose of dark fruit, cedar, ash and cocoa. On the palate, large scaled and structured, with tobacco, coffee, dark fruit, and cedar / herbs. Dry, somewhat chalky tannins. This is a monster of a Chinon and the most tannic of Joguet's 2003s. Needs time but VERY promising. Very full with nice balance. Good character with layers of fruit on the palate. Very Good Indeed. (1549 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 10/6/2005: $30.40 retail, after discount. As expected, this is a super-concentrated Chinon. The nose is a bit tight, with a rather dense core of dark fruit and cocoa, with some subtle herbal elements. Blind, I would have probably guessed young Bordeaux from a rather lean vintage - though, knowing what I'm drinking, and even as ripe as it is, this is still a typical Dioterie. Big and rather tannic on the palate, with a chalky, chocolately element, a fairly unassuming green note (to a lesser extent than normal) , and a grippy finish. Depite its relative ripeness, it still has an acid streak to it - I would not call this lush, by any means. Clearly, this wine is not meant to be drunk this young - and I knew that going in, but I wanted to see if I should up my order while more is still available (yes). At $30, this is a very interesting wine, with lots of upside potential after medium term cellaring (I'd revisit in late 2008 at the earliest). Note: a bottle of the '96 last year (see TN), was fantastic, so I'd expect the '03 to be showing at least as well eight years out... This is one of those wines that could really surprise folks with both its longevity and the complexity it will develop in the cellar... (1513 views) |
