| Community Tasting Notes (average 89.2 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 28 notes) | | | Tasted by NavyGrog on 2/2/2010 & rated 80 points: Not particularly different than other Chilean Carmeneres. A bit light. Bouquet is wanting. Heavy bottle containing an overpriced lightweight wine. (127 views) | | | Tasted by sayward on 8/11/2009 & rated 89 points: opened this bottle in conjunction with some California cabs. The color was nice and dark. The nose was very different. A hint of grapefruit on the nose. Some structure to the finish. This is not my style of wine. I prefer the Sena a lot more vs this Carmenere. (387 views) | | | Tasted by Lou on 1/25/2009 & rated 88 points: Dark purples in color, took some time to develop complexity once opened, pepery and spicey on the finish, sharp tannins that smooth out after a couple of hours, this will evolve in the bottle over the next 2-3 years. (579 views) | | | Tasted by joshwoodward on 1/1/2009 & rated 91 points: Native-y nose. Light pencil lead. Medium body. Balanced and elegant. $55 (581 views) | | | Tasted by Tim Corliss on 12/11/2008 & rated 85 points: (480 views) | | | Tasted by ebharrigan on 10/28/2008 & rated 94 points: A fleshy and ripe Carmenère with loads of blueberry, ripe plums with soft notes of vanilla and toast. The lingering finish last over 20 sec. It's hard to imagine this wine getting better over time but I'm anxious to see. Drinking absolutely beautifully now with about an hour of decanting. (651 views) | | | Tasted by Jody Smith on 3/22/2008 & rated 84 points: Pop -n- pour. Odd, misplaced sauvignon blanc aroma of boxwood/cat pee. Spoofalated, formulaic, French (medium toast plus) oak aromas and flavors of chocolate and vanilla. Blackberry fruit, one dimensional, absolutely zero secondary or tertiary aromas. Texture is very interesting - gigantic, luscious, and mouth coating. Tannins are beautiful, talc-like. Long and persistent finish - problem is the flavor and aroma profile is so monolithic that the length is a persistent reminder of how boring this wine is. Unlike any Carmenere I've had - it could be that the uber ripeness just killed any distinctiveness in the grape. If I had to guess, I'd say they still haven't sorted out which vines are Carmenere and which are Merlot. Distinctive texture aside, this wine is very forgettable. But strikingly deficient in structure. Bad bottle or just closed...I don't have the experience with Carmenere to say. (1405 views) | | | Tasted by kstoddard on 11/20/2007 & rated 87 points: Blackberry, earth, blueberry. Rich and extracted with very bright fruit. Dry tannins with a somewhat acidic finish. 14.5% alcohol. Palate is simple berries with a hint of chocolate. finishes with little to remember it by. (1300 views) | | | Tasted by Medo on 9/27/2007 & rated 90 points: Big smoky and minty nose with leather, cassis, plum and some dark raspberry flavors. The oak is shining through a little bit. The palate is medium bodied and fruit fowarded with a good structure, some oak and a kind of mint freshnes. The finish is long and decent. A very solid bottle of wine, but excepted somewhat more. (1564 views) | | | Tasted by mattiasjansson on 8/24/2007 & rated 93 points: Arcadian Fine Wines Tasting (Kate Portanova's Loft): Interesting nose - not sure if I like it. Great palate with silky tannins. Long, perfectly balanced finish. (1828 views) | | | Tasted by Danielusmc0331 on 8/13/2007 & rated 89 points: Expected more from this Camenere that created a big fuzz. (1489 views) | | | Tasted by johnphinney8 on 6/15/2007 & rated 88 points: After 5 hrs open (not decanted)... much more expressive on the nose than when first opened. Loam, cedar, oak, and a touch of blackberry on the nose. Oak is strong here. Lots of leather on the palate, as well as iron...very austere finish, although it is fairly long. I'm not sure what aging will gain here, as it won't cook up more fruit. I think this wine is just big...but too big in the wrong places... (1676 views) | | | Tasted by htam on 6/10/2007 & rated 92 points: It is my first time to have carmenère, very interesting. A lot of furit, good sturcture, very long finish. (1599 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 5/20/2007: T & T brought this to dinner. Very impressive in the use of quality fruit and very expensive new French oak (lots of it!). Very dense, loaded with rich, mouth coating fruit. Nicely structured and balanced, but not my cup of tea in terms of style -- the dominant aromas and flavors are oak, and more oak; could have come from anywhere. (1684 views) | | | Tasted by Dusty Bear on 5/3/2007 & rated 90 points: Well, that name is at least half right, it's purple, and dark at that. Though this ain't no angel - it's more of a brute, but quite enjoyable. Eucalyptus, brambly berries on the nose and palate. There's some mocha, bacon and spice on the mouth and just got better the day after. Will likely pick up at least one more to put some age on it. (1784 views) | | | Tasted by hcampana on 3/30/2007 & rated 88 points: @ Home with steak.
Is this the heaviest, most impressive bottle I've ever seen? Very dark purple. Nose is distinctly Chilean and dominated by a wet loam and eucalyptus, but also offering a distinct spice note. The palate was a let down, lacking fruit in the mid palate and an austere finish. (1858 views) | | | Tasted by bacchus on 3/16/2007 & rated 92 points: had a taste at richard's best cellar. this is the least dainty angel i have ever come across both in terms of product and packaging. this is a powerhouse of a wine. this combines the best of bordeaux intensity and bright fruit produced by southern sun. surprisingly chunky body.
ken's notes- an attempt to make world class wine from carmenere. 8% petite verdot. only about a thousand cases produced. resembles rich bordeau, with mocha, toast, tobacco, plum, blacberry, blueberry and violets, with a ripe but elegant texture and fleshy and mouth-filling body. (2064 views) | | | Tasted by sivilli on 3/13/2007: Oak and ripeness on the nose - a bit grapey, but opened up to show more complexity with time. There is nice spiciness that makes this pretty attractive. On the palate, the oak shows through, and this is pretty full and intense. The finish is long and mouthcoating. Pretty nice. The first activities at our vineyard began in 1987. Two partners with great illusions, Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, both holding long-standing experience in the wine industry, were certain Chile could improve on the quality it was producing at the time. It seemed as if the large and medium-scale vineyards were satisfied with limiting their distribution to local supermarkets. They certainly knew how to produce premium wines, but didn’t feel up to it, they were satisfied with the niche markets they had attained, which was certainly broad, although small. In 1988, another two original partners joined in, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, each providing their qualified, complimentary views, and thus, Viña Montes was formally born, initially under the name Discover Wine Ltda., a saga that has made Chile internationally known in 75 countries worldwide while providing extensive recognition and acclaim.
