Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 12 notes)

Tasted by Doni.Bertolami on 7/23/2010 & rated 92 points: Red cherries, lots of spices, forest honey, licorice, mushrooms and conserved fruits in nose. Palate a bit dominated by the minerality. There are no different phases. The wine more or less fades away with one tone. Certainly a good wine but not worth the price. (276 views)
Tasted by rabs on 5/9/2010 & rated 91 points: Deep purple. Strawberries on the nose. Full-bodied, fruity, cherries. Not quite syrupy but rich fruit feel. Nice wine. (394 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 4/18/2010 & rated 90 points: (378 views)
Tasted by slippytoad on 4/16/2010 & rated 92 points: (448 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 3/13/2010 & rated 90 points: limited notes. fully bodied and extracted (sappy) yet not shining like the 2002. Probably needs five to ten years to develop some complexity in bottle. HOLD. (820 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 10/24/2009 & rated 92 points: Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Very rich and well extracted.
Excellent. A little overpriced maybe. (1609 views)
Tasted by Papies on 9/13/2009 & rated 92 points: Both Nics and I are now fully converted into "new" age spanish wines. This is no exception.
Decanted for 45minutes and should have given it a couple of hours to tell the truth. Big Big body super deep red colour. Nice long finish. Well rounded and balanced with good structure and no rough or bitter tannins. Forward and enjoyable to drink now but will develop for sure over the next few years. (1617 views)
Tasted by jimf on 6/16/2009: Terrible bottle of wine. Strong nose of dried meat that carried through on the taste. Couldn't get past half a glass. (1874 views)
Tasted by DRob on 1/1/2009 flawed bottle: Corked bottle. (1751 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 2/9/2008 & rated 93 points: (1812 views)
Tasted by mmurry on 2/9/2008 & rated 94 points: Wines of Spain! (Farpointe Cellar): The nose was full of blackberry liqueur and also had vanilla, spice, and floral notes. It ended with a bit of blueberry. The palate had a lot of cedar upfront, plus some blackberry, spice, and toast. It finished with blueberry and vanilla. (2413 views)
Tasted by blue on 9/22/2007: New world as it gets with power, fruit and cream but it has the freshness component a nice bright acidity that make it drinking great now and will evolve greatly. (2440 views)

(Finca Allende CALVARIO) By and By

Dear Friends,

We've had a lot of requests for the 2003 Bollinger since we first offered it (probably from the new WS review that backed up Parker's assessment) but the new wholesale is closer to $100 - they were not very happy about offering the same price as the first round (pre-review) but I was able to squeeze a small additional amount at the same tarriff which looks like a bargain at this point.

Here's the original offer from earlier in the summer with the new WS review:
*************************************
Friday Focus (Redux): Bollinger

"This wine has received a great deal of chatter recently after Parker's 95pt assessment on his Asian foray (documented on his web site). I believe this was one of the highest rated bottles of Champagne on his entire trip (and he tasted top bottles left and right, every night). Called a "white burgundy with bubbles" this Champagne is idiosyncratic, eccentric and one of a kind - that's why they named it as such ("by Bollinger" instead of just another Grande Annee). Controversial? Maybe but there is a huge contingent out there that could drink this every night. Batard mixed with a ripe Clos du Mesnil? If you close your eyes, it's possible. This is not the Grande Annee - "by Bollinger" is the winery's top cuvee in 2003."

2003 Bollinger "by Bollinger" (750ml) (RP95) STRICT LIMIT 12/person

**************************************
In addition to the Bollinger, a few other wines of note...along with the requisite cut and paste fodder. I believe all of these have arrived and will be available for local pick up in 2-3 weeks. All prices should be darn low - the Vigna Rionda is as cheap as I've ever seen:

2004 Finca Allende Calvario STRICT LIMIT 12/person

2005 L'Oustal Blanc Minervois EXTREMELY LIMITED

2005 L'Oustal Blanc Minervois "Maestoso" EXTREMELY LIMITED

2006 Domaine Collotte Chambolle-Musigny STRICT LIMIT 12/person

This is a delicious wine that will drink well in the mid-term - better than many 2005's and one of the only 2006 wines we've carried.

2000 Oddero Barolo "Vigna Rionda" (GR3) STRICT LIMIT 3/person at this price

Thank you,

Jon Rimmerman

About Red Wines

Varietal character (Appellation America) | TAPAS: Tempranillo Advocates, Producers and Amigos Society

Tempranillo is the premium red wine grape variety from the Rioja and Ribera del Duero region in Spain. Tempranillo's aromas and flavors often combine elements of berryish fruit, herbaceousness, and an earthy-leathery minerality. Being low in acidity and sugar content, it is commonly blended with Carignan (Mazuela), Grenache (Garnacha), Graciano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos and Amontillados. But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
