Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 20 notes)

Tasted by Lopaka on 10/29/2009 & rated 87 points: A nice bottle of pinot. Darker in color with a nose filled with dark fruit and smoke. On the palate, much lighter in flavor than the nose would lead you to believe with a strong undercurrent of white pepper spice (almost too much spice). However it complemented the porchetta wonderfully. (167 views)

Tasted by Decaturwinedude on 2/26/2009 & rated 88 points: Dark cherry and smoky nose. Palate is juicy, cherry and pomegranate. Bit of heat, though, it sticks out on the back side. Needs to shed some for me. Altogether, not a bad buy for under $25. I'd drink again. (386 views)
Tasted by mnewzs on 12/24/2008 & rated 90 points: Smooth with very nice fruit (380 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 12/17/2008 & rated 87 points: A very nice pinot, our first but based on this bottle definitely not our last JV Stoller pinot from Willamette Valley. Enjoyed a couple of glasses earlier today for lunch with Kim at Devi's in NYC, matched up with spicy Indian food very well. Poured straight out of the bottle, medium purplish with somewhat thin mouth feel, well balanced but clearly still quite toung. Bright pleasant nose with red cherry, white pepper and cola. Primary flavors included some cedar, red cherry, raspberry, mint and development of some black pepper and smoke with further aeration in glass. Definitely recommend this and with this structure I do expect further improvement with cellaring over next 2-3 years. (432 views)
Tasted by dfeiner on 11/23/2008 & rated 91 points: Pop and pour. Or unscrew and pour. Nose is a bit reticent. Some cherry, a bit of citrus/grapefruit and a hint of brown sugar. Sweet fruit taste. Brown sugar/molasses, cherry and a hint of raspberry. Nice medium mouthfeel. This is a very pleasant wine and a great value. (475 views)

Tasted by esb on 5/25/2008: Medium garnet. Musty, old oak barrels and almost void of PN character. Off bottle? Retaste. (680 views)
Tasted by Sundesertcactus on 5/9/2008 & rated 93 points: Floral nose typical of pinot , sour cherry notes, tends towards the lighter side of pinot. Great value for the $, probably the best pinot I have had in the $20 range. (704 views)
Tasted by Black Mikan on 5/5/2008 & rated 90 points: Approachable now. Classic Dundee Hills terroir character. Medium body, cherry abundant, some spice. Nice balance. Surprisingly good Pinot for the price. Better value than Stoller's more expensive Pinots. A nice surprise find. Definitely recommend for the price. (713 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 1/31/2008 & rated 87 points: Wine House - Oregon: Big fruit; Big depth (921 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 1/26/2008 & rated 76 points: K&L Tasting: Nose is a bit off; Palatte matches; Wet dog (924 views)

About red wine
Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Located just 28 miles southwest of Portland, and 40 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, the Dundee Hills appellation is situated within an irregular circle of about 6,490 acres in total, of which more than 1,264 acres of vineyards are planted. This region is unique for its higher elevation, warmer nighttime temperatures, less low-elevation fog and frost, and lava-based Jory soil series of reddish silt, clay and loam soils.
