9/17/2011 (At Home in the Cave)

All wines were decanted for 3 hours - the older wines (>5 years) remained in the cellar at 55 degrees until 30 minutes before.

  • 2000 Concha y Toro Carménère Terrunyo Peumo Vineyard Block 27 - Chile, Rapel Valley, Cachapoal Valley
This wine grew on me significantly as the wine tasting and evening progressed. Good moderate tannin with a very light dustiness on the nose. There was initially a slight medicinal nose. Gave the impression of a moderate Bordeaux/Merlot. The unveiling showed it to be a Carmenere and I have never had a Carmenere like this as it was lacking the guava nose I normally find. THis is the first time I can understand as to why it was mistaken for Merlot for so many years. (Scoresheet 82) (88 pts.)
  • 2008 Château Lynch-Bages - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Dark red with a cherry nose with a hint of spice. Smooth and dry with a full body and heavy enjoyable tannins. Moderately long dry finish. Classic Bordeaux from Bordeaux. (Sc 88) (92 pts.)
  • 2006 Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill - USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
Light and enjoyable cassis on the nose. Full bodied with moderately heavy tannins. A touch (very small) of heat in the finish which indicates to me that it should maybe lie for a little. Moderate finish. (S=91) On retasting I adjusted the score down to 91 - nice wine but it doesn't match the first label. (91 pts.)
