Tasting of Tuscan wines with Chris Zimmerman of Vias Imports.

The White

  • 2011 Bruni Maremma Toscana Plinio - Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Maremma Toscana
Floral notes complemented by white stone fruit and quince. Nice minerality, medium weight body, and great acidity. Very fresh and clean. Finishes with very light tannin and a touch of green apple. (88 pts.)

The "Traditional" Reds

  • 2009 Gagliole Chianti Classico Rubiolo - Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Loaded with spice--cinnamon, clove--and darker fruit. A touch of pond water on the nose, initially. Medium body with more of a dried fruit/raisin component. Good length on the finish, ending with mouthwatering acids and drying tannins. (88 pts.)
  • 2010 Bruni Morellino di Scansano Marteto - Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Morellino di Scansano
More fruit forward initially on the palate, there isn't a lot of depth behind it. But the finish is long with big tannins and acids. (88 pts.)
  • 2009 Fattoria del Cerro Vino Nobile di Montepulciano - Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
Subtle nose, mostly darker red fruit and plum. Rich, mouthcoating body tastes like red hard candy and finishes with big acids and tannin. Still firm at this point, and definitely begs for some food. (89 pts.)
  • 2010 Argiano Rosso di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino
Very fruit forward; rich yet light, and quite round on the palate. Finishes with good acidity but rough-edges on the tannins. It really needs some time to integrate, but shows potential. (90 pts.)
  • 2007 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Nicely balanced nose of wood spice and dried fruit. Really elegant mouthfeel--round and soft, with deep concentration. Fine tannins on the finish. Nicely balanced and drinking well right now. (92 pts.)
  • 2007 La Poderina Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Subtle nose, dark cherry and spice. Soft and elegant body but still good weight and concentration. Very refined tannins. Fresher and more fruit-forward style than the Argiano and Fossacolle. Very enjoyable. (92 pts.)
  • 2007 Fossacolle Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Lots of wood. Overall bigger, riper body--and bigger tannin and acids--than the Poderina. Lengthy finish with angular, disjoint tannins. Definitely powerful, and quite tight at this stage. (91 pts.)

The Super Tuscans

  • 2009 Rocca di Frassinello Maremma Toscana Le Sughere - Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Maremma Toscana
A bit medicinal on the nose. Red, juicy body with good weight, but tart acids and a relatively short finish initially. It definitely improved as it opened, showing more depth on the body and additional spice notes alongside the juicy red fruit. (91 pts.)
  • 2008 Argiano Solengo Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Really nice nose, though you can tell there was a lot of [expensive] oak on this one. Big tannins, still with some rough edges. Good weight with some fruit showing through the oak. Definitely lower in acid compared to the Brunellos. Good balance right now, though overall this is still quite young. (92 pts.)
