2/6/2013 (Luke's Oyster Bar, Gemmil Road, Singapore)

Wines by the glass at Luke's.

  • N.V. Pierre Paillard Champagne Brut Grand Cru - France, Champagne, Bouzy, Champagne
I thought this was a nice NV. It had a lovely nose, very gently complex, with notes of earth, yeast and buttery cream floating around a core of white fruit, white meat aromas and a touch of minerality at the sides. The palate was yummy too. Built in an elegant, polished style, this showed gently citrus notes of lemon and green apple along with fleshier white fruit on the midpalate, all this scored by a little underline of mineral and streams of fine, very persistent mousse. This bottle seemed to have some age on it - it was round, pleasing and nicely balanced, yet with a nice understated reserve to it. Yummy. (91 pts.)
  • 2010 Woodlands Cabernet-Merlot - Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
This was a nicely accomplished wine from a very reliable Western Australian producer. In many ways, it represented a very archetypal Margaret River Cabernet blend, with a nice nose of blackberries and cassis just shaded by the slightest green leafiness and a highlights of eucalyptus. The palate came across very clean, clear, even pure, with cool cassis and berry fruit flavours held in superb balanced by fine, ripe tannins and well-integrated acidity. A very smooth, polished wine. I thought it was a bit simple in its youth at first, but with some time, an interesting savoury component of meat, earth and peppery spice started emerging on the midpalate. The little minty eucalyptus notes snuck up at the finish again, but these were more in the way of an interesting highlight rather than overwhelming greenness. I rather enjoyed this, especially with a a nice steak done in a mustard and peppercorn sauce. (90 pts.)
