  • 2002 Domaine Michelot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Served to the tasting group blind. Mint and ripe apple and pear aromas. Rounded fruit flavors, similar in profile to the wine's aromas, perhaps a bit more more ripe to start, but with some citrus hints on finish. Very well textured, good energy at end. Good persistence. Better than another bottle than just over a year ago. (92 pts.)
  • 2005 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne Quintessence - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Tasted double blind. Very ripe orchard fruit aromas with plenty of oak spice. Very modern on palate with some new oak that still protrudes a bit more than I would hope for a wine with a few years in bottle. Good acid and density would make me think this will continue to evolve and improve into something more nuanced and interesting. (90 pts.)
  • 2000 Gagnard-Delagrange Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Open three hours before serving, very oxidized. I was told this was very mature when first open, then went consistently downhill. (FLAWED)
  • 2009 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée 3.14 - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Tasted double blind. A tough wine to figure out. Ironically I was torn between this being from Burgundy or the Rhone in a super ripe vintage, so geographically I couldn't have been more correct!

Sweet red cherry aromas, then similar on palate with a slightly candied cherry pie character. Very nice with moderate density. Very unique and interesting. (88 pts.)
  • 2000 Dominique Laurent Mazis-Chambertin Cuvée B Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasted double blind. Oak spice with mature red fruit aromas and mushroom. Hints of sauvage on palate with less density than I'd expect from Grand Cru. I think there was a real drying element here that some thought was "green" but i found to be the effect of a bit too much new oak for the level of underlying fruit here. (89 pts.)
  • 2007 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts-Doix - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Tasted double blind. Red cherry and strawberry, accessible and forward on nose and palate. Slightly simple with a faintly tart finish, but a real success taking in a rough 2007 vintage. (90 pts.)
  • 2001 Chalone Vineyard Pinot Noir Chalone - USA, California, Central Coast, Chalone
Tasted double blind. Difficult to really enjoy in any way. Way too sweet and ripe to start. Much the same on palate, with an off-putting, off-balance finish. (78 pts.)
  • 2001 Domaine Debray Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Tasted double blind. Tart cherry with plenty of unclean merde character. Lean, seemingly much older than its actual age. Uninteresting at best. It isn't often I'm served a wine from a Burgundy producer i don't know, but in this case I will remember the name as a producer to avoid. (68 pts.)
  • 2007 Sine Qua Non Syrah Labels - USA, California, Central Coast
Tasted double blind. Plum, cassis and meaty spice aromas. Huge black fruit again on palate but simultaneously showing great balance and textures. Very long, exciting and persistent. Third time I've had this wine and it keeps getting better. (96 pts.)
  • 1998 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Tasted double blind. Ripe and tangy black cherry aromas with some plum. Dense and powerful dark fruit again on palate, nicely balanced with some incredibly charming rustic earthiness. Great and elegant structural elements throughout. Impressive. (95 pts.)
  • 1994 Niebaum-Coppola Rubicon - USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
Tasted double blind. Plum and black cherry with background spice and vanilla hints on nose. Palate at a very good place right now, mostly still fruit driven with emerging earthy elements. Slightly simple, but very good Bordeaux-like balance. (90 pts.)
  • 2005 Domaine Maume Gevrey-Chambertin En Pallud - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasted double blind. Red and black cherry aromas, similar on palate with good spice emerging on finish. Far more delicate and lacy than I'd expect from Gevrey, but also more dense and serious for its level. Very accessible for the vintage. I don't recall ever having a wine from this lieu-dit before, but it's one I will now seek out. (90 pts.)
  • 2005 Clos Henri Pinot Noir - New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Tasted double blind. Plenty of forward, ripe black fruit with an assertive liqueur character. Similarly ripe on palate with a slightly sweet, slightly distracting component. Others enjoyed this more than I did. (82 pts.)
  • 2006 Lucien Le Moine Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasted double blind. Basically popped and poured, this clearly would have benefited from 5 hours in decanter and could use another decade in the cellar. Modern styled aromas with huge, ripe blackberry and blueberry aromas with lots of new oak spice. Similar on palate, but dense, backward, long and powerful. Great concentration and raw material were evident, but this came across more as a great wine in-the-making than a great wine this afternoon. (93 pts.)
  • 2004 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Served double blind to the tasting group. Red fruit aromas with very good woodsy spice support. Forward red fruit that came across as very fresh and charming, even if not quite at top Grand Cru density, but impressive minerality and textures throughout. (91 pts.)
  • 2001 Château Troplong Mondot - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasted double blind. Rich aromatic start. Big black fruit, mostly plum-like with plenty of liqueur and oak spice. Lots of ripe, sweet fruit throughout, very easy to enjoy, even if slightly simple. (90 pts.)
  • 1997 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Tasted double blind. Ripe black fruit aromas and flavors, modest spice. Still showing plenty of good fruit hat hasn't faded but hasn't really picked up the nuance I sometimes find in the best bottles of Williams Selyem at this approximate age. (90 pts.)
  • 1996 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red - USA, California, Napa Valley
Plum, anise, cassis aromas with some good spice. Power and balance at the same time, overall at a very good place now, but with the potential to hold and even improve going forward. (92 pts.)
  • 1970 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Tasted double blind. This is the third time I've had this wine over the past few years, and this was by far the best showing. Tobacco, slightly floral, intense mushroom and lingering red cherry aromas. Mature red cherry flavors with plenty of mushroom again. great acidity and textures. (92 pts.)
