  • 1996 Oddero Barolo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Not a style of wine I enjoy; the fruit here's rather ripe and framed by rather noticeable new oak, and there's a faint tinge of alcoholic warmth on the back end. (81 pts.)
  • 1982 Azienda Monsordo Bernardina (Ceretto) Barbaresco Asij - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Very fragrant with mature red fruits, dusty earth, leather and high toned floral notes coming together into a lovely scent. It doesn't show quite the same depth of flavour on the palate, where it comes across a little thin and shows its age, but it's still very pleasant. (88 pts.)
  • 1967 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Not nearly as fine a showing as the last bottle I encountered, but this is still really good. Very savoury with mature red fruits, tobacco, spice and dried rose petals coming together on the nose and palate, and more herbal and earthy elements emerging with some more air. Still quite vibrant and wonderfully balanced, this is drinking wonderfully now. (90 pts.)
  • 1967 Fratelli Dellavalle - Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara
Enough funk and brett here to make an old Cordier look tame in comparison. Sweaty, leathery, barnyard and earthy funk around a core of red fruit that's still surprisingly fresh and lively, and despite the rustic impression the aromatics make, the palate's remarkably polished and elegant with a lovely texture, tannins perfectly integrated and bright acids keeping it very light on its feet. (91 pts.)
  • 2009 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Cascina Francia - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
Massively ripe, jammy black fruit with a heavy oak and vanilla seasoning, and a nasty alcoholic finish. Yuck. The 2010 wasn't any better. (74 pts.)
  • 2001 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Still very young, but so refined, elegant and compelling right now. The tannin's surprisingly fine grained, and there's a core of very pure red and dark fruit tinged by savoury tarry, earthy and highed toned herbal and floral notes. Long, polished and wonderful to drink, even though this has years ahead of it. (92 pts.)
  • 2001 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sorė Tildėn - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Absolutely stunning wine. An amazing perfume that builds with air, combining layers of pure red fruit, flamboyant floral and spicy notes, earth and more savoury cedary and tarry elements into a scent that's hard to move away from. There's amazing depth on the palate and a sense of real polish and finesse to the texture with very fine grained tannins, and amazing length. A real wow wine. (96 pts.)
  • 2001 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Costa Russi - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Many of the same flavours as the Sorì Tildìn we had alongside, though the oak here is slightly more noticeable, though still perfectly balanced. The cedary and spicy elements stand out a little more here, but again the fragrance, sense of finesse and textural refinement here are absolutely compelling and it's an amazing wine to sit down with. (95 pts.)
