 2/12/2014 (Tilia, Mpls)

This was a nice evening themed on WTDS, that gravitated largely to French but with a nice mix of domestics too. Six of us gathered at Tilia for the usual great food and service. The wines were delightful!

  • 2002 A. R. Lenoble Champagne 'Collection Rare' Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru - France, Champagne
Light gold color. Drank 1+ glass over 60 minutes. This really lived up to expectations. Excellent nose with a wonderfully attractive yeasty character, followed by pear, apple, and sea breezes notes, fresh and promising. The palate has delivers the same wonderful yeast along with baking bread, citrus, pear skin, pear, lifted, very fine bead, very elegant and very long finish. This is in a really nice spot right now, with room to evolve further. 94+pts. (94 pts.)
  • 2010 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Séchet - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Nose is very bright with citrus, orange, flinty minerals, pear, developing some earth tones later. The palate is fresh and nimble, melon, citrus, apple, saline minerality, long and well balanced. As with so many 2010's, this is splendid. 92+ to 93pts. (92 pts.)
  • 2010 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Temperance Hill - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Medium red color. Decanted for 30 minutes. Drank 1+ glass over 90 minutes. Lovely nose with spices, pretty raspberry and strawberry notes, bright florals, dry earth, & cinnamon The palate is deftly balanced, with a mix of spices, dry earth, berry fruits, elegant, and very long on the finish. Definitely young enough to benefit from 30-60 minutes of air. (93 pts.)
  • 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Very dark red/purple color. Slow-O'd for 2 hours. Drank 1 glass over 60 minutes plus. How fortunate to able to drink this again after a bottle just over 2 weeks ago. This bottle performed even better and seemed quite young and fresh. The nose has lots of garrigue, cherry, dark berry, spice, anise, and dry earth. The palate shows great purity, cherry, kirsch, along with some deep dark fruits, ripe, full bodied, with pepper, anise, and a touch of oak on the finish. Youthful. (94 pts.)
  • 1996 Château Calon-Ségur - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
first bottle was corked, backup was excellent. (FLAWED)
  • 1996 Château Calon-Ségur - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Very dark red color. No signs of age. PNP after the first bottle was corked, drank 1 glass over 80 minutes. Nose starts with great funk, earth, nice fruits, cassis, blueberry, earthy, floral, some dry herbs. The palate is full bodied, pretty, dry earth, cassis, blueberry, spices, medium grained round tannins, medium plus finish. This was drinking great on a PNP and shows nice maturity, hitting its stride now. (93 pts.)
  • 2008 Oddero Barolo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Dark red color. Decanted for 2 hours. Followed one glass over an hour. Nose is quite good, very earthy, ripe fruits, berry, spice, strawberry. The palate is still somewhat obscured by some firm tannins; tar, spicy, and showing some heat and oak on the finish. Good nose, but needs more time to integrate. Give this another 2+ years. (90 pts.)
  • 2007 Corliss Estates Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
Very dark purple/red color. 2hr decant. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Nose has some great ripe fruit, crème de cassis, mulberry, blueberry, herbs, mint. The palate is full bodied, deeply concentrated, silky texture, black and blue fruits, mulberry, round tannins, nice finish. I thought this showed very well, primary and young, but very approachable with no edges, well balanced and should really be great in a couple years. 93(+)pts. (93 pts.)
  • 2008 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
Purple color. I think this was decanted for 2 hours. Followed glass for an hour. Black and blue fruits on the nose, spices, lots of oak. The palate is full bodied, glycerin, oak, dusty, developed some earthiness, young, slightly bitter, oak. This is showing a lot of wood right now. Hopefully some time will integrate it better, maybe. 89(+?)pts. (89 pts.)
  • N.V. Azienda Agricola Moroder "Oro" Marche IGT - Italy, Marche, Marche IGT
Light gold color. From 500ml, PNP. Drank a small pour with dessert. Sweet, orange, cinnamon on the nose. The palate has vanilla, pineapple, apricot, orange zest, spice, alcohol shows with some citrus on the finish. (88 pts.)
  • 2005 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five - USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
Drank a glass of this at the end of the night. PNP, didn't take any detailed notes. Typical and very enjoyable, full and rich with black fruits, tobacco, cedar, and oak. (92 pts.)
