 1/17/2016 (Feast & Imbibe - Evanston, IL)

  • 2004 Jean Boillot & Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Youthful and expressive nose has ripe baked apple and honey notes. Palate is round with fresh, bright acids. Plenty of fruit and energy in this wine. (91 pts.)
  • 1989 Château Palmer - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Medium ruby with light browning at the edges. Breathtaking, complex and fragrant aromatic profile with pencil lead, earth, tobacco and bright red fruit. Wow - this is ethereal and penetrating on the palate. The fruit has medium body and is still youthfully bright. Still has plenty of structure and lively acids. Consensus at the table was this was not yet at peak drinking. Amazing stuff. (98 pts.)
  • 1990 Château Palmer - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Translucent medium ruby. Full nose has dusty fruit with a decide herbaceous quality. Palate feels softer and more plush than the '89 tasted side-by-side. Nice and complex flavor profile, but the structure has started to fade. Don't think this gets any better -- time to drink up. (90 pts.)
  • 1989 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Dark ruby color. Gorgeous aromatics are just singing with pencil lead, tobacco, cigar box, red fruit and dark chocolate. Wow, sensational palate with fresh, bright chocolaty fruit made complex with herbs, tobacco and earth notes. Still has chewy tannin. Less primary than a 1990 tasted side-by-side, but I preferred the depth and complexity of the 1989. (95 pts.)
  • 1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Medium ruby. Full, big nose has a primary and youthful profile with sweet red fruit and pencil lead. In the mouth this is dense and unbelievably primary for a 25 year old wine. Fresh, sweet, chocolaty fruit and chewy tannin. Great length and density on this wine, but when does it start coming around? (93 pts.)
  • 1989 Château Lynch-Bages - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Medium ruby with some browning on the edge. Sneaky nose doesn't have the full out power of others on the table tonight but has great depth and complexity with red fruit, tobacco leaf, cigar box and bell pepper. Wow, wow, wow in the mouth with incredibly youthful and bright fruit that has a polish and vibrance that defies it's 25+ years of age. Delicious and with upside. (95 pts.)
  • 1990 Château Lynch-Bages - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Medium ruby. Powerful and lifted aromatics with primary red fruit, smoke and cigar box. Palate is similarly driven and powerful with rich, primary red fruit and still-gritty tannin. Flavors are also more primary with fruit in the foreground and smoke, mineral and bell pepper lurking in the background. Enjoyable, but very young and seemingly in need of time. (93 pts.)
  • 1989 Château Montrose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
    Sadly, corked. (FLAWED)
  • 1990 Château Montrose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Perfection! Dark ruby in the glass. My first note upon smelling the wine ... "Holy fu**ing shit!" The aromatics literally explode from the glass with a combination of power/grace and breadth/depth that blew me away. Aromas were varied and deep including bright fruit, earth/funk tones, mineral, tobacco, cigar box and bell pepper. In the mouth this wine packs power and richness with amazing levels of elegance. Layers of flavor and texture. Vibrant acids and lively acidity. And a long, lingering and penetrating finish. Perfection in a glass. (100 pts.)
  • 1989 Château La Conseillante - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Translucent ruby. Lighter aromatics with soft red fruit and prominent mineral, tobacco leaf and dried herbs. On the palate this feels tight and unyielding with tannins that are still brawny. Initially I didn't find enough fruit but it picked up weight and density over ~30 minutes in the glass. Better with food as well. (91 pts.)
  • 1990 Château La Conseillante - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Translucent ruby. Aromatic and polished nose with sweet red fruit, dark chocolate and fresh cut herbs. Terrific power and density in the mouth. Plenty of youthful, delicious rich fruit. Nice depth of flavor an undercurrent of tobacco, cigar box, mineral and herbs underneath. More giving and flavorful than a stingy 1989 tasted side by side. (94 pts.)
  • 2004 Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Very light gold. Full nose is generously fruited and giving yet elegant with green apples and mineral. Rich and round palate. Apples, honey, spice and lemon cream. Lively finish. Great stuff. (93 pts.)
