Frugal/First Steps Tasting | (624 page views) | | - 2005 A to Z Wineworks Pinot Noir - USA, Oregon
Frugal/First Steps Tasting Loads of pepper!
- 2006 Argyle Pinot Noir Willamette Valley - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Frugal/First Steps Tasting: very very light and unexceptional
- 2005 Espelt Empordà Sauló - Spain, Catalunya, Empordà
So much oak, it was undrinkable
- 2004 Shafer Merlot - USA, California, Napa Valley
Chalky rich fruit with earthy complexity; very nice; not a little merlot. Long finish with very pleasant chalky tannins displaying no bitterness at all. Yumm! (92 pts.)
- 2006 Estancia Pinot Noir Pinnacles Ranches - USA, California, Central Coast, Monterey County
Very simple. A reasonable drinkable wine, though not a pinot.
- 2005 Newton Claret - USA, California, Napa Valley
A subtle claret this is not. Big black fruit, very forward.
- 2005 Estancia Zinfandel Keyes Canyon Ranches - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Taste pepper, but not much else.
- 2004 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five - USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
Good, but a lot of tannins and closed. Waaay too young.
- 2002 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley - USA, California, Napa Valley
Big, bold, tannic; The 2003 Alexander tasted along side is much yummier
- 2002 Twomey Merlot Napa Valley - USA, California, Napa Valley
Big, one-dimensional, with bitter tannins. Plummy, more like an extracted California cab. Overpriced!
- 2006 Château de Trinquevedel Tavel - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Tavel
Lots of elbows; not well-integrated.
- 2005 Gramona Penedès Gessamí - Spain, Catalunya, Penedès
Crisp and very floral. Very yummy!
- 2004 Truchard Zinfandel - USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Very peppery and simple
- 2004 Truchard Roussanne - USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Medium mouthfeel, citrus, flowers, some spice and slightly harsh metallic and petrol notes. Very good QPR.
- 2005 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch - USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Limited tasting note: good!
- 2004 Robert Hall Meritage Hall Ranch - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
At tasting, poured by winemaker. Brief notes read: Perfectly targeted elements with little complexity.
- 2005 Robert Hall Rhone De Robles - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
At tasting, poured by wine-maker. Did not seem Rhone in style; modern-style Spanish grenache, perhaps. Very clean and easy-drinking, with little complexity. Quite good, but not much different than many $10 offerings.
- 2003 Graham Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Chalky; well-integrated sweetness, very rich, incredibly long finish. Yum.
- 2006 Robert Hall Viognier - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Nose of tropical fruit salad, melon, and chrysanthemum. An atypical viognier for California, as it has lightness, depth, and subtlety with just a touch of sweetness. Somewhat similar (though a drop less preferable) to The Innocent. (88 pts.)
- 2005 Shafer Merlot - USA, California, Napa Valley
Very smooth and luscious, but unidimensional.
