Most unexpectedly backward and monstrous. Closed on the nose. Cassis! on the palate. And tannins! It's a wine of some power, but it needs time still. Not what one normally expects from Heitz at all.

colour is a rich dark plum. nose leans a little more to the savoury side of the spectrum but with air, it grows in complexity and sweet (and spicy notes) become more evident as well. palate is much the same, more savoury and woody but with nice acidic zip and a healthy hint of cassis on the back end. very nice. I bought 3 or 4 bottles of the 06 Heitz Napa. I think this is my first bottle. I either have none or one left. Better gets notes tonight! I think I gave others away. What was I thinking? Wine is meant to be shared.

What is better than paying around $33 for a bottle of wine, forgetting about it for twelve years and having it blossom on your palate the way it is tonight? This is a prime example of two things; you don’t need to spend a hundred(s) for a really good bottle of wine and their is absolutely no substitution for appropriate cellaring time.

The nose reveals; steeped, dark fruit wading in fruits of ripe/ruby; blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, baked, black plum & strawberries, hovering raspberries with pomegranate, light liqueur notes. Mild alcohol vapors, black licorice, sweet tarriness, mixed dark fruit cola/licorice, mid, dark spices, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon & vanilla, saddle-wood, graphite, dark rich souls, forest floor with dry leaves, dry crushed rocks, dry twigs, tree sap, mint/eucalyptus, soft leather, dry tobacco with ruby, brilliant, fresh & withering, candied; dark, red, purple florals with a field of violets.

The body is, rich, ruby and creamy with fruits of; blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, baked, black plum & strawberries, hovering raspberries with pomegranate that shows light liqueur notes. Mild alcohol vapors, black licorice, dark, steeped, black , assorted fruit teas, sweet tarriness, mixed dark fruit cola/licorice, mid, dark spices, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon & vanilla, caramel, mocha, saddle-wood, graphite, savory grilled meats, dark rich souls, forest floor with dry leaves, moist clay & top soil, dry crushed rocks, dry twigs, tree sap, mint/eucalyptus, hints of Provence herbs, soft leather, dry tobacco with ruby, brilliant, fresh & withering, candied; dark, red, purple florals with a field of violets. The acidy is like a cool waterfall on a warm day. The beautiful, elegant, extremely well knitted balance is in the realm of “forget about it”. Sometimes the right wine, when it’s right, moves the entire body. Such as it is tonight.

The tension, structure, length and balance have just hit their high point and will remain there for another five years into a slow decline over the next 10-15 years, stored impeccably.

This might be the best Napa Heitz I’ve bought & stored. It’s stunning and way over delivering its price point. One complex wine!! (3241 views)

I must adjust my last tasting note. Today I opened the bottle and drank the remaining half of it (first half poured with Coravin). Either I or the wine had a bad day when I wrote my first note in April or the wine has really transformed/changed: Now the palate matches the nice Napa Cab nose: fine, silky tannin, noticeable fruit, spicyness, complexity and a good length. Only the high alc of 14,5% abv prevents an even higher score. Wonderful wine at its beginning peak. (5579 views)

Checking in at 14.5% ABV, which I think of as HUGE, the 2006 Heitz comes across instead as a rich but well-balanced Napa Cabernet. Beautifully perfumed, there is a smack of kirsch liqueur on a frame of great bones -- a sturdy spine that is solid but not aggressive. There is a touch of heat on the finish, but all in all, this is a really wonderful example of what Napa can do. In context, a really good value as well. (4984 views)

Very good value; price for quality of wine. Heitz Cabs have been one of my "go to" wines of late. Everything is subtle about this wine; fruit, tannins, whatever else I'm tasting but can't discribe. The nose is a highlight; here I do pick-up some cherry. This is not a heavy, big boy Napa Cab, but rather a softer, quieter, still well produced, cabernet from Napa that I certainly recommend as a value buy. (2679 views)

Inky and dark in the glass, nose of tobacco, leather, oak, and subdued fruit and spice. Tight upon initial opening, the tannins close the palate down, but after 20 minutes the whole affair is remarkably open, the blueberry and blackberry step up, the acid finds its place, and the tannin resolves nicely into a support role. More red/garnet in color. Really nice nose. Some floral aspects on the nose intermixed with red fruit. More raspberry & bing cherry with just a touch of earth. Very linear lacking complexity & depth. The tannins are manageable and I didn't even decant this. The finish was decent lasting 20seconds at the most. Lots of acidity too just making my mouth water. This is really missing those "extras" that make a wine amazing. There is fruit and then it drops off mid palate. The tannins are there but they are not the massive dense tannins that would allow this to be cellared for a decade. Instead I would drink this now or over the next few years. But I would not go over 5. This is a nice price point for an everyday drinker but vin 29s cru blows this away for the money. (3187 views)

Been awhile since I last tried one. Decanted for 3 hours before taking first sip. The wine was much more approachable after decant. It could have gone 4 hours no problem. Subtle fruit cab. Definitely, has some of the boldness one would expect from Heitz, but it was not too much. This bottle can go another 15 years no problem. Important thing is if you plan to open and start drinking a wine right away this is not a candidate for quick consumption. Decanting is important at this early stage. (4230 views)

Nose of black fruit, cassis and a notes of licorice and herbs. Medium bodied, opaque deep garnet color. Black cherry and blackberry on the palate with more herbal notes. The bottle had been open for a while but it still had a hot alcohol character that took 30+ minutes in the glass before diminishing. Tannins were soft but present, medium length finish. At the price point, I think there are better offerings out there but if you're a fan of Heitz, it's a decent showing. (3152 views)

Rich and generous palate, albeit too fiery. Very modern. A little bit too much oak on the palate. Fullish body but a bit clumsy. Sweet liquorice on the finish.
Tasted blind the wine screamed "New World" and with a personal "gout francais" this sadly detracts from the rating. (2353 views)

Dark and inky color. Legs on a nice wine glass even though it was not a cab glass, a flared pinot glass. The nose was crisp and clean. A little acidic when inhaling and sipping, but flavorful. The palate has lots of dark fruit. Cellar tracker says best between 2011-2020. I couldn't wait and certainly couldn't wait to decant. Always been a character flaw, not being able to wait to decant. I Have to taste the wine at different stages. This Heitz Cellars will probably get better. Not bad now. (2893 views)

Holiday Party (Gail and Steph's, Mpls, MN): Very dark red color. This had about 30 minutes in a decanter before being served. The nose is oaky, spicy, dark cherry, that later develops some black fruit character, mostly cassis, some heat at times. The palate is medium full bodied, withoak, spices, moderate amounts of alcohol showing, earth, cassis. Decent base bottle, but not the best QPR. This might benefit from some further bottle age to resolve some tannin, but I am concerned about the alcohol over time. (4645 views)

Rating this completely blind from what others gave it. Enjoyed at Bob's Steak and Chophouse at the Omni Fort Worth TX. This is a super complex wine, and all in a wine that poured with a muddy dark red. Opened over 3 hours of dinner. The nose from the pour was intoxicating - not because it had a lot of floral or spice, but because there was a lot of intricacy that I was surprised would exist from a bottle of Napa cab. The nose has everything from limestone to red clay dirt to wet hay to a backbone of thorny blackberry with a hint of black cherry. This wine immediately smelled like it wasn't going to be Napa Cab in a bow tie. On the palate was a nice, earthy wine that consisted of a medium to full bodied blackberry pie, some plum, but not very tart plum. The mid-palate was kind of short. Not a lot of spice on this wine - not a very good steak wine due to the lack of an expressive middle. This wine finished with a lot of oak creeping in, forest floor, blackberry. Totally surprised by this one, and I can understand if some would give it a sub-88 rating based on the fact that they expected this to be a tuxedo wearing Napa cab. If you're looking for this kind of Napa cab, then look elsewhere because you will NOT find it in this bottle. Perfect drinking window now IMO, but look to hold this one another ten years if you so dare. Done by 2025, as I really see a lot of integration already. (4956 views)

A good solid cab for the money. This wine is very bold and needs to open up. I decanted for 3 hours prior to drinking which really gave the wine time to develop. Nose is full of fruit.
