Deep purple core with some notable bricking at the rim. Nose of tobacco, candied fruit, vanilla, and some barnyard. Medium body with medium acid and some really pleasant velvety tannins. 2nd night. Simply put ..... great. Let sit at room temperature for 2 hours and man did this settle down. I urge any fan to sit on these wines for several more years. It is so much more tonight than last night. More Bordeaux like than Italian.

Tobacco, lead pencil dominate. Sorry for the analogy to French wine but my nose is the most memorable to that memory. This is a lovely wine where ch is better tonight than last. (1708 views)

What a nose. I get an herbaceous, smokey cedarwood, and tobacco combo. Total left bank French but then I look and it says ITALY ! Wow is this some good stuff.

On the palette the acidity is dominant to the point where I hope the fruit can remain given this balance. Mid palette and finish is totally dominated by acidity. I want to believe that this wine is still just a puppy given the color. Color is deep dark with no signs of fading.

I still had 3 bottles of this vintage. opened 2 and they were both way passed. i suggest trying/consuming this vintage really fast. I was amazed how fast it derailed. last year I consumed the first 3 bottles of the same 1/2 case and they were amazing. fast forward one year, and the second half is bad. (1606 views)

Good fill and cork. Decanted three hours; heavy sediment. Opaque purple color. Blackberry, leather and vanilla on the nose. Rich, full-bodied dark fruit on the palate with ample acids and light tannins. The finish is quite long and pleasing. It’s not going to get any better, but I’m betting it will still be drinking nicely for several more years. (1741 views)

Had the 2001 of this at a tasting recently and was wildly impressed, so I snagged some 99, 00, and all that I could find of the 01. Based on this 2000, the 99s and 01s will spend some more time sleeping. This wine is spectacular. Deep ruby color with no sign of fading at all. The nose explodes with aromas of leather, licorice, earth, tar, espresso, and toasted oak. Incredibly rich palate with all of the above, plus plum, wet leaves, and tea. Man, I really enjoyed this! Sorted tannins and a very long finish. I am loving this Italian producer...95 Pts (3721 views)

This is such a well make Tuscan beauty. It starts of with a wonderful herbaceous nose. On the palate, you get so many tastes of Tuscany (dried herbs, truffles, anise and dark berries). Good balance. Finishes long. Well done. (3119 views)

Alvin's Lunch - March 2013 (Le Gavroche): Tasted blind – Nose here was very nice from the get-go with rich dark fruit, smoke and hints of leather and green tobacco that had me thinking Syrah or Merlot. On the palate this was smooth and charming with solid acidity and well-balanced tannins. This was really nice and made the previous two wines seem rather modern. As good as this was today, I’d hold these for a few more years. Excellent. 91+ (3333 views)

Dark purple burgundy color with no bricking. Popped and poured, but it definitely would benefit from a decant, as it improved steadily in the glass. Rich cassis, tar, berry and wet leaves. This was very good, full bodied with brambly red and black fruit. I can't really score this properly because I drank this with my SIL after drinking too many citron an seltzers a bit earlier in the evening and my wine senses were a bit off. I was really craving a piece of grilled beef in a bad way after my first couple of sips though. I even decanted the bottle for about 25 minutes, for the sober peoples benefits. This is a big full bodied wine with deep color and flavors that are a mix of red and black fruit. All the hard edges are gone as this wine has matured. It is classified on this site as a Red Bordeaux Blend. It is more aligned to the right bank than the left. (3295 views)

Gorgeous deep dark red with a bit of bricking at the rim. Subdued nose of damp earth, gravel and graphite. Rich and smooth, seamless, delicious. Sometimes when a wine is really good it is hard to pick out fruit descriptors because it is so integrated. Intense, concentrated flavors. Oak is totally integrated, tannins are resolved. Tasted blind as part of a mini Steak-Out. This finished in 3rd (out of 7 wines). Consistently excellent. This was my last bottle and it continues to impress. Very difficult to identify as an Italian wine, it has new world fruit intensity and old world elegance and structure. Supple and smooth. Very well-balanced. Terrific with the steak. One of my favorite Super-Tuscans. Cab Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cab Franc. (3339 views)

Dark burgundy/purple color. Really enjoyable wine - earthy and smoky notes of berry, chocolate and cassis. I always like these wines and think they are a bargain for the price. Lovely, and lots of complexity, depth and richness. I don't drink a ton of cabernet-dominant wines, but there was plenty of character on display here -- mature, dark fruits, a bit of (good) green/earthiness, cedar, and spice. Still was singing two days later. I like where the wine is at now on the aging curve (there's still fruit, the oak has integrated, and tannins have softened), but I wish I had a few more bottles to follow over the next several years to see additional secondary characteristics. I'm going to try to wait to open later vintages until at this stage and later. (3417 views)

Mark(me94) - I too thought it must be the Insignia. Jason(94) also presumed it to be the Insignia.
Coming down to the last 6 wines we were all wowed by the Tua Rita Giusto di Notri, and many of us wrongly presumed it must be the Insignia. It and the Ernie Els were clearly the WOTN's, with perhaps the Tua Rita getting the edge. (5329 views)

A St Paddy's day Fiesta (my place): nose: really rich nose filled with dark cherries, various bell pepper and other root vegetable tones, rich cassis, spice box, cedar, and some belgian chocolate tones. Good depth and very dark, the vegetable notes are a bit different from what I would expect, but they aren't too much

Sipped on the patio at a croquet party. The crowd favorite in a llineup that included a '97 Dei Vino Nobile Riserva and a '99 La Poderine BdM. Great balance, lots of refined, supple fruit. Somewhere inbetween Bordeaux and Napa in style. Deilicious. (4022 views)

Had the difficulty of following a smashing 1990 Léoville Poyferré at a BYO. However, the 2000 Giusto di Notri stood the test and was drinking very nicely but in no way going downhill. Fabulous concentration and good complexity. Very left bankish but with a warm Tuscan touch. Well-made and structured in spite of the warmth of the 2000 vintage. Excellent value (esp. compared to Redigaffi from this winery). Highly recommendable. (4447 views)

This was brought to the CWM cellar dinner at Courtrights by Otis. It was paired with a course of Braised Waygu Beef Short Ribs, Truffled Polenta, Cipollini and Braising Jus. A round and supple wine. This is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc aged in new French oak. Round and supple and drinking very well. Filled with rich red fruit and black cherries. Purchased on release for $75. Dark color with some minor clarity on the rims. I was surprised at how Bordeaux-like this wine was. It had the nose of a mature claret, with tobacco, dill, and cassis. On the palate, nice soft inviting currant fruit shaded with savory oregano notes and a hint of celery seed. Finishes resolutely, suggesting that it will continue to age for several more years, but it is quite enjoyable now. My favorite wine of the flight with the waygu short ribs (vs. '01 SQN Midnight Oil and '98 Ch. La Nerthe Cuvee des Cadettes). (4791 views)

Occasional tasting group: Super Tuscans. (@ WB): Very dark blood red. Complex bouquet with oak, liquorice, blackberries, mint and some sweetness. In the taste sweetness again, juice, pepper, blackberry marmalade, a lot of alcohol and some good bitterness from the tannin. The wine has a long juicy and pure aftertaste. A very luxurious wine. A dinner with 5 highly rated Italians (Vancouver, BC): This wine sure lived up to its billing. Just a great Bordeaux lookalike. Two bottles enjoyed together over an excellent cheese assortment. Reminds me of a top 2nd growth, like Pichon-Baron from a great year like 1990 or 2000. The final wine served on an evening of really super Italian wines, but it did not fail to impress. Real typical Cabernet character. Cassis, sweet cherry, a bit of mint. A very beautiful wine. (5607 views)
