2007 Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Granite de Clisson (France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine) 9/15/2022Seth Rosenberg92

Tasted double blind from a small capped bottle. Deeper than the 05 and 10 along side with very pretty nose - some honey, floral. Palate is crisp, pollen, florals, tart green apple, maybe a bit of peach. Salty minerals. A bit of lemon, bit of salty popcorn. Finish is tart and salty (would guess Chenin).
Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20. (925 views)

Deep yellow color. Structurally more relaxed and less zingy than younger vintages, but still with plenty of granitic material. Superb pairing with oysters (of course), which brings out the wine's length and amplifies the rocky core. (787 views)

Single blind tasting
Pale gold
Aromatics medium. Rock, wax, wool
Palate medium +. Acid medium + with crescendo aspect. No phenolics. Yellow apple, salt, ripe lemons and minerals
Finish has medium length. Rounded mouthfeel, but balance is towards the acid
Dry glass notes of rocks and salt
Can drink now, but despite the age still has the acid to cellar further (1431 views)

Pale gold color
Medium minus aromas - wool/ wax and intense minerality with underlying cheese rind character - really no fruit at all on the nose
Palate is another thing entirely - ripe lemon and grapefruit and intense salinity - linear mouthfeel but with nice rounded edges
Medium plus acidity which really crescendos in a Chenin Blanc fashion
Medium alcohol and no noted phenolic bitterness
Nice long finish - wow
Dry glass aromas of dry rocks and salt
I personally find few wines which give me such pleasure at this price - aged Muscadet has to be one of the most underrated drinking experiences out there
Drinking very well now, but with really NO signs of oxidation, I can see this going forever (1460 views)

This wine was fantastic. Selected to go with clams in white wine with garlic and saffron and simple pan seared Alaska halibut showered with green herbs. This bottle is starting to show some mature aromas of waxy fruits and nuts, and the fruit expression on the palate has opened up with time as well, adding some aged complexity to its expression, especially on the finish. Lithe & focused on the palate, with decent acidity. Nice persistence - has that tart "Granny Smith apple" edge to it.

Significantly better as it warms - this allows the quality fruit to show itself. The mineral, seashore and acidity is there, no problem - plenty of cut and bite - but the fruit needs a little help. Lemon curd, chalk, iodine, and an oregano or herbal spiciness that I enjoy, and is only noticeable with some air and warming. I still think this is young, but not sure - it's an interesting wine. A bit of a bruiser for a Muscadet, but I have to say, I like it. Very much like a dialed down, razor edged Barraud Pouilly Fuisse. No heat at all, and no degradation (though maybe some long term fade?) over three nights.

Three days later: After nursing this over three nights - a glass a night, letting it warm in glass - the very last sip was by far the best. Not a hint of oxidation, cracking up, heat or other indications of over-the-hillness. I've reached my verdict - this is very, very young, and a very very special white wine in that I've never had one improve so much on warming. Best at 65-70 degrees F, unbelievably, and behaves like a high quality red, yet with all the classic Muscadet notes. Beautiful complexity and very long finish. Wonderful wine, and glad I have lots more. I'd take this over an Aubert Chard (except maybe the Lauren) anyday, and this has TONS of upside. Much more interesting than the last bottle, so perhaps coming through the other side of an awkward or shut-down period. Different from its youthful self, the wine now shows more depth, complexity, and saline pungency, which I'm beginning to read as a sigunature of well-made, well-aged Muscadet. (2142 views)

It's funny, not to mention maddening that the word "terroir" persistently defies quantifiable definition, yet the phenomenon clearly exists. In yet another example of the fact, this tastes way more like another wine from white-mineral-laden soils -- namely Chablis -- than it does like most Muscadet. Granted this similarity owes something to the fact that while most Muscadet, even most good Muscadet, is built like a 1970's tennis pro, this is built like a 21st century decathlete. But I don't think that tells the full story, because this doesn't merely seem like Melon de Bourgogne that does barbell lifts at the gym; it really does share more in common with, say, unwooded Premier Cru Chablis than it does with 95% of its appellation cohort. It's as though varietal character for both categories is subsumed by the lemony-stony essence of the growth medium, with grapes being merely the palatable vehicle of that substrate. That's even more true of the wine now than several years ago, as the brawny fruit has taken on a burnished quality and the structure come to the fore. One more thing's certain: if I'd bought this for the same intended purpose as most Muscadets, I'd feel as though I'd brought a Howitzer to a squirrel hunt. It's certainly no seaside quaffer, or to toss back like Fresca at an oyster roast. (2591 views)

Tried this with some delicious fresh raw Maine oysters on the half shell. Good acidity, very direct and a little spritz. Overall what I'd expect from a good muscadet, but not great. Maybe I was just expecting more/better from the paring; the oysters were better than the wine. Age has been kind to this wine. Starting to take on some darker light golden hues in the glass, with bright acidic fruit aromas on the nose. The wonderful acidity is still here, and this is still dominated by a sensation of rocks and citrus, but fruit is also starting to take on some darker tones, which really add to the appeal of this. What really makes this special though is the intensity of the finish - intense and mouthcoating, lingering on after the last sip. A really fantastic bottle of wine. Atypically, I will not provide a score for this wine because I do not feel that I have a good enough understanding of this wine to do so. A first, I almost thought it oxidized, but this type of taste is the style of this wine. I drank it a while ago (this note is from memory, but it is a memorable wine). As others have noted, mineral flavors. Well balanced. I can see why some say a few more years. I have a bunch more, and I will revisit the wine later. (1703 views)

Coming out of its clumsy phase. Easily identifiable as Muscadet, and even Clisson, on the nose alone, this is nicely layered, detailed, ripe for a Muscadet (but not overly so), and delicious. Hints of subtle and tasteful butterscotch to add to the ripe tropical oriented fruit profile (for a Muscadet). Great acidty, blazing Meyer lemon, nice chalk, minimal seashore, very good length. Starting its run, this will be delicious for a decade plus, easily. 91pts pure qulity, 92 pts personal preference, this might even gain more over time. (1831 views)

Starts out a bit muted, both nose and palate. Eventually shows some chalky lemon. Body thinner than I remember. Muted. The next evening opens to show more varietal typicity, but still a bit held back. The length is the biggest clue, and it's quite long, while the details of my previous Day Two note only show up on the end of the 2nd evening, at the end of the last glass. I'd sit on these for another two or three years (maybe more?), or slow ox for 10 hours, as I think they're in a dumb phase. Not close to showing its potential of 93-94pts. (2222 views)

MuscaDay 2013 (Tom's House - Washington, DC): I like each vintage we tasted, but something about 2007 speaks to me. Aromas of peach blossom, guava, perfume, orange peel, honeyed tea. The palate is rich, deep and full of creamy peach, guava and orange fruit, but of course the zesty acid is there for balance. Bracing minerals provide backbone. The depth of this makes me think it could age for a decade. (2990 views)

Developing beautifully. It wasn't until day 2 that I found Muscadet here, but that;s not a knock at all. I loved day 1 - the wine is delicious! Day 1 - P&P. Brilliant, deep, green-hued yellow gold. Saline, chamomille, but mostly an explosive lemon flavored Starburst (or Sour Patch Kids - which ever you prefer) candy nose. Great complexity on the palate, especially for a wine this young. Tart citrus/quince entry, smooth oily mid-palate, the barest hint of butterscotch, and then again that Lemon Starburst candy explosion and blazing acidity on the mouthwatering and long finish. All this enlivening detail atop a foundation of chalky, mineral-laden, basic Muscadet structure, so this is no poofy wine. Superb!
Day 2 - Muted nose, same on the palate, this is going into a bit of a shell it seems. More kumquat and carambola (starfruit), without the candied note, and the same strong mineral acid structure. More 'tropical fruited' in its orientation than most Muscadets I try, and while that sounds weird to a traditionalist like me, it really works. This is beautiful, and my guess is this will last at this level, and improve, for another 10-12 years. Glad I have lots more! (2452 views)

Dinner with Vincent (Giant Garoupa Restaurant): This really was quite lovely. The last of three bottles, and I really wish I had more. It had a very inviting nose, gentle, yet complex with its notes of sweet green pear and ripe lemons, a bit of cream from the lees, and then a nice undercurrant of earthy, chalky minerality with a saline edge to it. Nothing really in your face, but it was a very gently pleasing bouquet. The same thing could be said of the palate. It had a soft, creamy attack opening up in juicy flavours of pears and lemons, a touch of flowers - rather fruit forward, but all underlined by bright acidity and a steely, tensile mineral streak so that the backbone of the wine though the attack and the midpalate seemed almost stern until it that melted into a long, friendly finish where white fruit and wet stones melded together into a delicious package. Really yummy and lovely with our seafood. So much so that the wine was almost deceptively simple in its easy elegance. Yet if one really paid attention, there was quite a bit going on in there. A real treat. (2860 views)

Oily and yet savory, and also a pleasant lemony citrusy acid with dank hay and white fruit. Flinty minerality with oyster shells and a fair metallic edge, giving an impression of salinity and seafood characters. When paired with actual superfresh sashimi slices, it is creamy! Jerming's Intro to Mature Old World Wines (Kingyo, Marina Square / Pine Close): A really soild Muscadet. I learnt my lesson from the last bottle, which only showed well towards the last few glasses, and popped this a good half-hour before serving this time. It seemed to do the wine a lot of good. While still clearly young, it drank very nicely from the first pour, showing a very maritime influenced nose - with seaspray, seashells, oyster shards and flint aromas twirling around with a little hint of straw and some neutral white fruited notes. A bit tight, so as with the previous time, it was the palate that really impressed with its rich depth of white fruit couched in an almost oily textured package. There was ripeness and power here beyond what you would normally expect from a Muscadet, but this was matched stride for stride by a very bright lemony, limey crispness. The wine was then lined with an edge of metallic minerality towards the long finish, where some pink grapefruit and subtle hay notes peeked out from amidst the riper fruit. I liked this very much. It had lots of character, yet it somehow still retained a neutral core that made it so lovely to drink and ever so versatile, with the flavours shifting subtly in sympathy to each piece of sashimi we had. Lovely stuff, which should get even better over the next couple of years. (3831 views)

Lunch at Kingyo (Kingyo, Marina Square): Very young, but this very nice - just about a perfect pairing with Sashimi. It had an attractive nose of ripe lemons and limes, a touch of fresh gooseberry and then plenty of oyster shells and chalky minerality, all very seaside-ish aromas. Very nice. The palate was about as good as one can imagine a young sur-lie Muscadet being. Opening with tons of minerality, the wine showed deep layers of chalk and flint undergirding a fleshy mouthful of ripe lemons and green apples on the midpalate. It was super fresh, very vibrant and really grippy on the back-end too, so much so that you could almost imagine tannins on this as it exited in a lovely, tingly show of livewire acidity zipping through more seashelly mineral and juicy lemon flavours. There was a really nice je ne sais quoi with this wine. Still very young and a bit tight though, this should be beautiful in time. I am so glad I have two more in the cellar. (3565 views)

Here is the wine that proved to me that yes, I could indeed love Muscadet, and that it could be minerally and relevant--a far cry from the strange yeasty notes that Muscadet gives up in lesser parcels. This was hands down the greatest Muscadet I've ever had, and even if I bought quite a few bottles, I was a fool not to have filled my fridge with cases from Astor when it was selling for a piddily $24. Best bottle of this I've tried so far. Familiar mineral Pepiere nose. Starts out a little broad in the mouth, I guess the extra lees contact makes this seem fairly rich at first. With just a little air the acid structure shows up and adds life and zip to the noted richness (for Muscadet, anyway).

This is an amazing wine in so many ways - depth, clarity, density, lift, balance – obviously very young but delicious with everything from cheeses to cured fish. It seemed to open all night most notably showing a vivid bouquet after an hour of air. Wonderful. (3786 views)

Dressner Day 1 (NYC): Huge, massive white wine with super bright acidity. Laser like precision. Gorgeous, amazing stuff. The elements that this wine contains within itself while remaining so pure and focused are remarkable. Thrilling wine. 92-94 (5278 views)
