2012 Carlisle Compagni Portis (USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley) 4/1/2018ohne_musik90

Drinking in a goodplace. While still hefty and rich, it is far more mellow than the young CPs I’ve had recently and been pretty ambivalent about. Meyer lemon, unripe stone fruit, grapefruit, bitter grapefruit peel that is almost quinine, and juicy acidity that give it freshness and lift, despite the noticeable alcohol that I have found in every Carlisle white I’ve tried. Finish is lovely and long. (1242 views)

What happens if you go to a bris and a Carlisle breaks out? I'm not sure where my niece got this wine, but it must have originated with me, then gone to my sister, who then brought it to my niece's house to celebrate ushering in my sister attaining grandmotherhood. I got there just it time to hear the baby scream, all the men in the room double over in sympathetic pain, and when I turned to the left, I was saved by a bottle of Carlise.

I had the 2013 in 2015 and I was not a big fan. I thought it was a bit rough. Now I think perhaps it was just too young, because with 5 years of age, the 2012, at least, has mellowed out quite deliciously. Breadth, weight and meatyness. The spice of the Gewurztraminer had mellowed into lychee nuts and other tropical fruits and there is a smoothness to this wine that I did not find in the young 2013. (1491 views)

As others have said, very aromatic. Notes of lychee and rose petals from the Gewurtraminer. Other very nice notes. Medium to full bodied for a white. (1432 views)

WCW One: This went toe-to-toe with a 2014 SQN Lightmotif, and for my money beat it out with its intriguing layers, balance, and agility. The wine changes inflection discreetly, a rare feat for New World wines. It shows 'dry' sweetness up front, including Gewurztraminer like spice, honeysuckle, and tangerine zest. The palate-coating middle offers stone fruit and glycerin texture, while the nutty back and finish put the mind to aged Rioja. Compelling throughout! (1616 views)

Drank side by side w/ 2012 Bedrock Compagni Portis. This one was more aromatic, showed more Gewurz influence. This was more viscous & acidic than the Bedrock, seemed to be made in a less traditional style. It showed better a bit colder than the Bedrock. (1115 views)

Pale gold. Tremendous floral aromas. The peach and stone fruit notes are still there but the minerality is really coming to the fore. (1147 views)

Chilled and opened. By far the best version of this we have tried. Crisp notes of green apple, quince, honeydew. Good sweetness and lively for the heft. A very nice showing and surprisingly consumed quickly in one setting. (1149 views)

hmmmm I do not remember having a Compani Portis which was this sweet. This bottle was almost cloyingly sweet. Not enough acid to carry it, and I found it flabby.
Was 2012 that different than the 2011? More Reisling? seemed too ripe. (1211 views)

Popped and poured with chicken scallopini with capers. Aroma is very prominent limestone. Taste has a similar flavor profile with limestone, and a decent amount of tartness. Interesting that we popped this and the 2012 Bedrock Compagni Portis side by side to taste blind - this was more much tart and less "round" or smooth than the Bedrock. They both have their virtues, but I might lean towards the Bedrock version more for continued drinking. (1430 views)

Pop & pour. Crystal clear light gold. A field blend of Gewurtztraminer, Trousseau Gris & Riesling. Exotic & unique, or maybe I should be drinking more Gewurtztraminer because this is fantastic. Fruity, but balanced as this starts with some tropical fruit that finishes bright & dry. I honestly don't know how we didn't finish the bottle in 10 minutes or so as this is painfully easy to drink. While this isn't terribly complex or nuanced, it is high quality stuff from an excellent producer. (1507 views)

What an incredible white wine. Showed more like a Rhone white blend. Extremely aromatic. A wine you could just sit and swirl and sniff. The flavors are certainly Rhone like and very concentrated. You can pick out characteristics of Riesling and Gewurtztraminer on the palette all balanced by a mouth watering acidity. (1357 views)
