2002 Novy Family Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Alder Springs Vineyard (USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County) 6/15/2012Mscruggs88

I found this bottle in the depths of my cellar and was very concerned about whether or not I had waited to long to drink after reading some of the other ratings. My concerns were further escalated when my cork screw pulled out thru the middle of the cork. So i had to push the rest of cork into the bottle and decant to drink. I was pleasently suprised by the performance of the wine. The tannins had definitely softened and the fruit was starting to wane but the wine seemed very well balanced still and really reminded me of drinking an older CDP from the Rhone region. Light Ruby in color, medium bodied, red fruit on nose and palate, drank with a dry aged bone in ribeye. (1142 views)

2002 Novy Family Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Alder Springs Vineyard (USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County) 5/30/2012dinwiddie89

I was amazed at how well this has aged. Garnet, starting to cloud a little. Medium body, black cherry and other dark fruits. A little tar, beef, cassis and tobacco. Nicely extracted. Very mild tannins with a nice mouthfeel. Medium finish that is falling a little short but not noticeable so. What it has lost in its "plushness"t has gained in finesse. While I don't know if it will go much longer, it would be fun to find out. Unfortunately this was my last bottle. Nice wine that went very well with a simple meal of grass fed beef burgers. This bottle held up quite well. Full flavors of blackberry and mocha. Not much complexity, but nice satisfying finish. (1985 views)

The earlier reviews had the right idea; still medium red color; cassis, tar and just a tad of berry; very quick on the finish; this wine was not built to age and it has a lost a bit of the fruit flavors noticed a few years ago; still pleasant enough and a good food wine, but I would drink up (1845 views)

Deeply extracted. Had to coax the expected Cab aromas from this wine as there was more cherry, tar, and meat than cassis showing. The palate initially showed sweet fruit with a soft mouth coating feel that transformed into really attractive dusty, almost gritty tannins and a medium long finish of modest complexity. 2002 Novy Family Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Alder Springs Vineyard (USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County) 4/17/2005RickG

I'd heard of Novy for a while and when I saw this on the shelf at my fave wine store for $20 I grabbed one. This wine is a blend of Cab Sauvignon, Merlot and Cab Franc.

On opening, the word the jumped to mind was "plush." This wine is packed with soft, dense fruit. Think dark cherry, some strawberry and a soft texture that just coats your palate. This isn't an intellectual wine with complexities that evolve over time, it's a wine to drink when you want a well made Cabernet blend. The lack of acid makes it easy to drink without food, but given the 15.1% alcohol, I'd eat something if I were you. Oddly, the fruit is dense enough that the alcohol isn't obtrusive at all.

There's not much strucutre to the wine (no grippy tannins, not much acid apparent), so I'd drink this now and for 1-2 years more. Very nice for the listed price - now I've gotta try more Novy wines. (2229 views)
