2020 Pierre Ménard Anjou La Varenne de Chanzé (France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Anjou) 4/23/2024kuumies

An interesting nose here with a hue of wool and apricot but beneath a very prominent bitter blood orange-laden core. Very bright, very singular and very much in a take no prisoners fashion. On the palate it is medium to full bodied with powerful acidic structure but most essentially with the same blood orange profile and quite some warmth. Tension for days, this is by no means the easiest of Chenins to approach but all the more interesting for it. Feels primary and young and even a bit mean at this point but I cannot claim to have any idea how it might develop from here. In a way this is reminiscent of some new wave non-dosé grower Champagne in that it is so distinct and seemingly pushing boundaries. If we consider the contemporary Anjou context this is very different from Boudignon’s super minerally yet altogether balanced and approachable style, this is like biting into a barely ripe blood orange. Not sure yet if I’m a fan but this certainly commands some respect no matter what. (27 views)

2018 G.D. Vajra Dolcetto d'Alba Coste & Fossati (Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba) 4/20/2024kuumies

Day 1: Incredibly primary and stern, effectively undrinkable.

Day 2: Richly fruited and on the darker side of the cherry spectrum on the nose. Maybe a bit plummy even with tar and licorice notes. On the palate pretty ripe but dry still with a markedly heady style. Intense and powerful, this is no timid wallflower nor light. Love the sizable tannins here, plenty of muscle and grip and a chewy mouthfeel. By all means serious stuff but also very drinkable on day 2. Admirable depth and length. (68 views)

2020 Gianni Brunelli Rosso di Montalcino (Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino) 4/20/2024kuumies

An awfully pure-fruited and pretty red-toned nose of cherry, leather, tobacco, a hint of licorice and minerally tones. On the palate it is easy-going and lightweight with bright, savory fruit expression and refreshing acidity. Markedly lively and enjoyable and of course extremely food friendly. More on the red side of the spectrum with Chianti-esque qualities. Has a transparent and authentic feel to it. Perhaps some roughness on the edges but it’s not rustic, more geared towards elegance actually with its proportions, lift and fruit quality. (83 views)

2021 Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Godefroy (France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly) 4/17/2024kuumies

Really bright and floral on the nose, brimming with crunchy fruits of dark cherries and tart raspberries, stem-like hints and minerally tones. On the palate it is light in weight, savory and massively fresh. Very lifted with kind tannic bite, it is exactly as drinkable I expect a 2021 to be from this address. The fruit ripeness might be on a tad lower side for those accustomed to the recent hot vintages but for me it’s just right. Despite the crunchiness there is also some spicy warmth to it - probably due to the volcanic terroir - that I find very intriguing and delicious. While very gulpable this also has character and depth. Overall, a terrific bottle of Gamay. (457 views)

2005 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion (France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan) 4/13/2024kuumies

Decanted for two hours. A very classic and complex left bank nose of cassis, red cherry, pencil lead, earthy notes, bouillon, a hint of mint and some smoky and spicy oaky notes. I really dig the herbal side of the nose, I suppose atypical but wonderful. On the palate on the rich side but thoroughly balanced and streamlined with grippy, appropriate tannins and excellent freshness. Savory and beautifully developed but with terrific, impeccably ripe fruit still. This is at a fantastic stage right now with pretty much perfect proportions. I enjoy this style a lot. (138 views)

2014 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Rouge (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru) 4/13/2024kuumies

Ripe red cherry fruit on the nose with herbal tones, minerals, and faint woodiness. Not massively complex, but very pleasant, bright and detailed. On the palate medium-bodied with healthy ripeness yet thoroughly savory and fresh. Very much red-fruited with an earthy touch, it has a pretty classic feel to it. The acidity is absolutely on point and gives it great vitality. A pretty unforced style here, aromatically this whispers rather than screams but performs admirably at the table. Young and restrained, if I had another bottle I would wait for five years before opening. (81 views)

2019 Domaine de la Taille aux Loups Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Hauts de Husseau (France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire) 4/11/2024kuumies

The nose on this one has wool for days. It’s not just that though, as the mix of fruits is plenty complex with hints of citrus, apricot and apple. There is also a minerally dimension to it for sure. Overall, very exciting. On the palate it is medium-bodied but quite complex, layered and expressive with an airy texture. The fruit expression is borderline mesmerizing also here but the finish has some tartness to it and cleans up nicely. At first the acidity felt borderline tame but it seems to be picking up as we speak. I can’t really say where this could be going from here and it doesn’t feel outright obvious that it would have a long life ahead. What counts is here and now though and I am deriving quite a bit of pleasure from its weightless, ethereal style. (271 views)

N.V. Éléonore Champagne Grand Cru Gageure 22 (France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru) 4/11/2024kuumies

A straight 2016 consisting of 58% Le Mesnil sur Oger and 42% Oger fruit. 16% foudre, 84 cuve, no malolactic fermentation. Tirage 2017, disgorged 11/2022, dosage 3.9 g/l.

This one is very fresh and saline on the nose with green apple-driven fruit, ginger and vanilla. The mousse is mouth-caressingly fine and persistent. The fruit is on the ripe side with suits the lowish 3.9g/l residual sugar well. The flavor profile excels in purity and the wine is refreshing as hell. This is a thoroughly classic product of Le Mesnil and Oger with through the roof drinkability. While quite linear and energetic it has some flesh too and is in no way angular or metallic. A fantastically delicious savory style, this is right up my alley. (72 views)

2021 Elio Sandri Langhe Nebbiolo (Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC) 4/5/2024kuumies

Oh so very fizzy on PnP, fortunately the delivery guy allowed enough time for decanting. After an hour still super primary with a slight fizz remaining, but already enjoyable for my tastes (less so for the missus’).

On the nose ripeish cherry fruit, iron and rosepetals. Smells quite reductive, too. On the palate has pretty good weight and some tannin but comes off relatively easy-going still. Excellent fruit here, ripe yet bright. Quite savory as is to be expected. Fills the palate nicely, then the tannins kick in and grip appropriately. Very youthful at this moment, the 2020 iteration seemed to come around sooner. Good quality still without a doubt. (219 views)

2014 Domaine Jean-Claude Marsanne St. Joseph (France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph) 4/2/2024kuumies

The nose is full of olives and capers with delightfully rich blackberry fruit, ground black pepper, violets and charred beef. Bright and detailed, NRS all the way. On the palate medium bodied with great bright fruit and lip-smacking acidity. At this stage very transparent and still very refreshing. Weightless with a very clean finish, this practically drinks itself. Very far from primary but immensely pleasurable with good fruit still, surely at its peak. (165 views)

2020 Bodegas Rafael Palacios Godello Valdeorras Louro do Bolo (Spain, Galicia, Valdeorras) 3/29/2024kuumies

Very strong lemon oil character on the nose with notes of toasted bread, yeast and popcorn reduction. Rather nice! On the palate it has some volume, viscosity and warmth (14%) but somehow it manages to make it all work. The solid acidity certainly doesn’t hurt, ditto the salinity. Indeed this has a distinctly salty feel about it and a delightful lip-smacking finish. There is firmness to the mouthfeel akin to some finer white Burgs. It is eminently pleasurable and gourmand too. Long finish is rather spicy but not hot. Great style and quality! (335 views)

2015 Elvio Cogno Barbaresco Bordini (Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco) 3/27/2024kuumies

A dusty and truffley nose of bright cherry fruit, tar, some wood and attractive floral notes. A bit restrained but nothing to complain about. On the palate this is not a big wine but the alcohol seems elevated as there is definite warmth to it and a taste of licorice. On the other hand it sports decent acidity and a pretty pleasant savory and red-fruited profile, so I reckon a cooler vintage of this could appeal to my palate. The mouthfeel is rather nice with ripe tannins that grip appropriately towards the finish. By no means a bad wine but yet too alcoholic for my tastes. (171 views)

2014 Roagna Langhe Rosso (Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC) 3/27/2024kuumies

The nose has a good deal of restrained red cherry fruit, spice, dry wood, tar and minerally tones. It is appropriate and articulate but clearly holding a lot back. On the palate it has great proportions, terrific savory fruit and a very firm frame. Dead serious, it is lacking nothing but for now everything is tight wound and the structure has the last word. It’s very easy to admire and there isn’t a massive tannic wall that would render it unapproachable or difficult to drink but I would say there is another ten years to go for it to reach its apogee. The 2011 was way more enjoyable at this stage but likely this has a higher ceiling. It’s not a 30€ wine anymore but for that price is overperforms. (480 views)

2021 Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Im Kleinschock Riesling Kabinett #20 (Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer) 3/23/2024kuumies

The nose here is not massively fruit-forward with the leesy, minerally and sponti notes displayed prominently. Alongside there is fruit too in the way of apple and lime. On the whole the aromatics are fantastically bright and attractive. On the palate it has good ripeness, it is by no means as restrained or tangy as other wines from this address that I’ve had. While it sports terrific acidity the wine comes off as ethereal and it drinks all too well. It is just perfectly harmonious and seamless and excels in purity. It has some volume but also tension. The flavor profile is a perfect mix of crisp fruit and leesy and stony elements. The finish is wonderfully mouth-puckering but absolutely balanced. It is equally delicious and refreshing and without weight. The best Kabinett that I’ve had in several years, easy. (923 views)

1993 Oremus Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos (Hungary, Tokaji) 3/23/2024kuumies

Amazingly bright and complex nose of apricot, honey, beeswax and botrytis. On the palate massively concentrated, oily and thick with huge acidity. Vibrant as hell, this is bound to be eternal. Really tangy, almost painfully so. (190 views)
