Tasted by Papies on 1/27/2024 & rated 91 points: A birthday at Bouchon Racine, London (Bouchon Racine, London): St joseph done proper . This was double decanted for a good 2 hours and really helps.
Still on the fruit side, rich, good use of oak, well round and polished with a lovely savoury side. Some oaky dynamic , remmenantes of the élevage style of Guigal but all well integrated and with wine very much owns the oaky dynamic. A solid 91 (460 views)
Tasted by wsammons on 12/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Almost Burgundian off the top - settled down with a bit of air which tells me this has a bit more time. Amazing wine. (241 views)

92 pts (710 views)
 Tasted by sidaga on 2/4/2023 & rated 91 points: Robe pourpre;
(874 views)
Tasted by Sean McGrath on 1/8/2023 & rated 94 points: This is really, really good now. The blackberry jam has mellowed, coffee and tar, excellent balance acidity and tannins. Smooth and a bit sweet to taste.

Decanted an hour (should do more, I bet). Was delicious with stew. (854 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 1/17/2022 & rated 94 points: Excellent. Powerful, savory, complex. (1919 views)
Tasted by Anders Bjurestig on 12/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Tried again with a Coravin to get a feel for the wine before airing it. Very much different from the 2001 (very acidic and not much fruit).
Aired it for 3 hours. Nice spice and balance, a very elegant wine. Wish I had more. But I think I set a cap on around 10-12 years for my newer vintages (1667 views)

(2058 views)
Tasted by Sean McGrath on 8/1/2021 & rated 90 points: This is in a good place now. Lots of dark berries, some tar, my wife mentioned boot polish / leather. Good balance of tannins and acidity.

Decanted three hours. (1580 views)
Tasted by stefr on 5/4/2019 & rated 93 points: Totally muted right after opening, then opened up in the decanter after an hour. Really nice wine – fruit and terroir flavours were in the right balance. (3010 views)
Tasted by OenoEd on 2/4/2019 & rated 94 points: I love this unique and quirky wine: nose offers framboise, black currants, pine cone, chocolate mint. This is vital and alive, vibrant acidity, tastes like some wild dessert: a savory dark chocolate boysenberry custard , with. black plum skins through to the finish. St Joseph at its best, in its prime and holding for 6 or 7 years. Missing only a hint of sauvage to gain another point or two, still this is clean and gorgeous. Try this with teriyaki salmon, or a simple grilled skirt steak. (2436 views)
 Tasted by sidaga on 6/2/2018 & rated 90 points: Robe dense avec des reflets violet;
(2433 views)
Tasted by casoe on 3/29/2018 & rated 93 points: Nice purple syrah color, nose and taste very balanced and aligned - the lighter side of dark fruit, blueberries, blackberries, spice, well integrated oak and a nice fresh high acidity level that points you to cooler climate syrah. A very elegant wine that certainly will gain complexity with age, but already is drinking very well. Wish I had bought more. (2589 views)
Tasted by eoinhharkins on 12/2/2017 & rated 92 points: On the elegant side of the northern rhone style with some oak, florals, spices, minerals dark red fruit and a hint of smoked meat, palate has a silky texture with fine grainy yet well integrated tannins, medium acidity and medium plus length (2764 views)
Tasted by Patrik H on 6/16/2017 & rated 90 points: On the nose: Dark berries, pepper, herbs, warm fruit. On the palate: Rather fine tuned without the big complexity. Fine acidity and a harmonious wine. Whitepepper, light fruit. I did expect little more.
Medium + finish (2327 views)
Tasted by Patrik H on 4/22/2017 & rated 92 points: On the nose: Meat, pepper, smoke, warm fruit.
On the palate: Sweet fruit, smoked meat, oak, vanilla, balanced.
Medium + finish (2152 views)
Tasted by Pavan on 8/19/2016 & rated 94 points: Will probably improve with further cellaring but already long, well-balanced and fruit. Not so pronounced animal/charcuterie character (2503 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 6/21/2016 & rated 92 points: Sweet fruit and vanilla butterscotch oak, rounded and luxurious, plush tannin, fresh acid, layered and delicious; others didn't bash this time. (2222 views)
Tasted by skifree on 5/10/2016 & rated 93 points: This wine was a lovely Syrah, thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of blood, meat, and iron without being over the top. (2142 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 11/17/2015 & rated 92 points: Tuesday Night Double Blind $50+ (Bin 75): Opaque core with bright violet rim; sulfur is still too strong at this stage to get much from the nose, fresh purple fruit underneath with sweet berries; youthful on the palate, sweet, juicy, lots of berry and plum, slight smoky finish, silky tannin with just enough grip, viscous texture; palate really made up for the deficiencies of the nose; probably best to wait on this another 5-10 where it will still probably drink like a young wine. (2776 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 10/10/2015 & rated 93 points: Just a lovely wine. Very expressive nose and lovely dark syrah with nice bacon fat and mushroom flavors with a spicy finish. Really nice. (2181 views)
Tasted by skifree on 8/22/2015 & rated 92 points: This was a beautiful Syrah on opening. The aroma included violets, and the smooth mouth feel was immediately noticeable, as well as distinct cinnamon, blood, and meat notes. It reminded me of a great Cayuse. However, the second night the wine seemed a bit out of balance, and had just basic flavors. 95-89 averaged to 92. (2118 views)
Tasted by FamilyLarsson on 6/28/2015 & rated 90 points: Är inte riktigt i balans för tillfället. (2255 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 10/11/2014 & rated 91 points: Guigal St. Joseph & C. D'aumpuis Tasting (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Spicy, pretty floral nose. Feminine, raspberry, earth, minerals. Moderate light body. Light stone fruit. Nice acidity, moderate light tannins. Excellent wine. (3199 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 7/4/2014 & rated 90 points: Had this wine before, several times, up on release.
I enjoyed it more then.
2009 is perhaps not a vintage in my style, as I come up on myself time after time not being really happy with the bottles I open.
Perhaps time will fix this, but I’m not sure, as more or less all wines I’ve had are a bit to all in and clumsy.
This is a huge Syrah, fully packed with smoked meat, smoke, bonfire, charcoal, tar, coffee, herbs, alcohol, oak, vanilla along with black and blue rather jammy fruit.
On the palate this has obvious signs of the vintage too, with alcohol heat, full throttle black and dark fruit, meat, blood and iron, good length and rather big tannins.
Some nice underlying tarter berries to somewhat balancing out the hotter, sweeter and jammier fruitiness.
Oak is still very present, with obvious vanilla and bitterness on the long finish.
This wine is still undelivered, with much more to reveal, but it’s a hard vintage to read.
I believe that this might come out as a great (at least much more pleasant and balanced) 10 years from now, if it holds together all the way.
91 points for tonight’s performance with a potential of reaching 93 - 94?
A big wine. (3148 views)

A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
