Tasted by Jamieson12o on 3/13/2024 & rated 93 points: Meet the winemaker - MDDG with Samuel Guibert (WSET Bermondsey): Cabernet Sauvignon vines now 50 years old. Cabernet Sauvignon is separately fermented (for up to 4 weeks) to all of the other red varieties (which are co-fermented for ~2 weeks whilst the cabernet sauvignon is being picked). Pumped over twice per day in oxygen-rich environment for 5-days, before flushing the oxygen out with CO2. Pumping over minimised to a maximum of once per day towards the end of fermentation. Blended post-fermentation, and pressed after blending.

Bell pepper comes through quite strongly. Super youthful; bags of tannins left (more than the ‘21 or the ‘12). I think this is brilliant. *Tiny* bit of a hot finish. The real standout out of the ‘21, ‘16, ‘12, ‘06 and ‘98 lineup. (144 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 11/12/2023 & rated 92 points: A magnificent Mas de Daumas Gassac vertical from the private cellars of Allard Jakobs (Restaurant Sinck, Amsterdam, NL): Magnum. A real 2006 in character, bright and tannic, grippy, clean and clear and bright, extraction not pushed too far, well made, still a good future. I was surprised. (1503 views)
Tasted by cugel_saga on 7/30/2023 & rated 92 points: Still some fruit in this one. Plums, damsons, something dark and sumptuous.
Tannins abound.
Herbs, possibly rosemary or thyme are vaguely hinted at.
Interesting and pleasant to drink. (604 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 7/4/2023 & rated 91 points: Dominant aromas are floral. Violets and blackberry aromas and the flavours are great. Tannins are still present but very welcome as they support the blackcurrant and blackberry fruits really well. There are savoury notes too with black olive and tapenade which linger long on the finish. A huge fan of this wine. (664 views)
 Tasted by Dave64 on 4/15/2023 & rated 90 points: I initially got:-
Roses
Cherries
Leather
However - whilst very fruity on opening the fruit faded over a short period of time, still smooth but more vegetal
Drink up? (907 views)
Tasted by Radders12345 on 12/15/2022 & rated 90 points: This tasted incredibly young for a 2006.
Fresh red and blue fruit. Quite monolithic with very firm tannins.
If I had any I’d hold (1173 views)
Tasted by acyso on 12/11/2022 & rated 85 points: "I drank all the Giz" (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Chewy and tannic, with some clear herbal green notes. Earthy and vegetal, for a wine of this size, the fruit isn't coming out to play. Anemic. It wasn't too hard to get to Southern France, especially once it was revealed that this was French but not Bordeaux. (1746 views)
Tasted by cugel_saga on 11/12/2022 & rated 92 points: Benefits from a 3 hour decant.

Intriguing flavours are revealed. Fennel and scrub and heat. The fruit has retreated and complexity and depth reign.

Good stuff. (795 views)
Tasted by auldalliance on 7/9/2022: Had really come round and opened up. A revelation, shame it took until the last bottle to do so..... (906 views)
Tasted by hrow on 2/23/2022 & rated 92 points: What a lovely wine! With the smell of roses and some spices it's surprisely tasty, on the palate raspberries, cherries and figs. (1192 views)
Tasted by winetobealive on 2/15/2022 & rated 90 points: Bouteille amenée à vins compris 15/2/2022.
Tasted by Franspigeaud on 12/10/2021 & rated 91 points: Mooi maar moet nog verder rijpen. Na decanteren in de ochtend blijft de wijn in de avond eerst nog gesloten en met nog flinke tannines. Nog veel potentieel want wel heel mooi van karakter. (1216 views)
Tasted by colmanstephenson on 7/16/2021: Brought to tasting
2002, 2006, 2009, 2013, 2016, 2018

All up to 2016 were drinking beautifully (2018 is too young), but sadly I mislaid my notes. (1405 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 1/26/2021: Might have been a little corked, and a completely different experience to an older bottle that I tried before. This showed polished red fruits rather than being rustic and foursquare, but thought that this was still rather monolithic and simple without much complexity for its age. (1765 views)
Tasted by Duncan H on 12/17/2020 & rated 84 points: Really disappointing...

Mid-weight, but lacks flesh and fruit. Some funky garrigue but overall a bit disjointed. (1476 views)
Tasted by fadincvaros on 5/30/2020 & rated 91 points: In una buona finestra, tannino presente ma già ben integrato, bella persistenza, naso complesso e con apprezzabili cambiamenti man mano che si è aperto. Nessuna fretta comunque, ha ancora diversi anni davanti a sè (1770 views)
Tasted by JulianW on 5/6/2020 & rated 90 points: I've been drinking this wine over the last 6 years and had written it off, overly structured, harsh tannins, closed, tar, bitter to the point of being unattractive (low/mid 80's at best), not like other years at all. Drinking it tonight, residual tannins still strong but softening out, some late summer fruit and overall a balanced, approachable and enjoyable wine. I don't think it's bottle variation, perhaps this wine was just closed down and is now opening? A shame I've been disappointed by 7 bottles and now find a wine I like. (1693 views)
Tasted by Duncan H on 4/19/2020 & rated 87 points: Mid/dark red in colour. Nose of lavender, garigue and blackberry. Midweight, supple palate - herby, earthy and a bit green and dusty. Not the longest mouthfull but good while it lasted. Had completely fallen away when we returned to it the following evening.

Decent enough, but I hope the remaining five bottles in the half-case are a bit better... (1587 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 4/4/2020 & rated 91 points: A good bottle! Typically deep but dull colour for Gassac at this age. Some obvious cabernet fruit but at least equally matched by earthy notes. Clean palate. Light-medium weight only. Plentiful tannins of course, but for once almost powdery rather than rasping. A certain angularity (leanness?) reminiscent of 2006 claret. (1430 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 12/2/2019 & rated 89 points: Disappointing. Big vintage variation with this producer as the 2009 was awesome. Very similar to my previous note but maybe lacked even more depth and structure. (1570 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 11/1/2019 & rated 90 points: 1hr decant, but should have just PnP’d. Lovely nose of cherries, tar, and must. Wine has decent flavor but is rather thin. Finish is tart and rather short. Probably just past prime drinking age or at one of those weird states. Nice wine but expected more. Pretty good QPR. (1392 views)
(1600 views)
Tasted by millesime1967 on 9/20/2019 & rated 92 points: Du cab? Jamais deviné. (1479 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 6/11/2019 & rated 89 points: Dim Sum Club at Crystal Jade Golden Palace (Crystal Jade Golden Palace, Paragon, Singapore): A pleasant enough wine - the nose smelt like a cross between Bordeaux and Loire, with ripe cassis, capsicums, tobacco and spice aromas wafting out of the glass along with a loamy earth undertone. The palate had a nice savoury twang to it, with meaty notes, some funky earthy accents, and a blush of cassis, all this underlined by fresh acidity and a mouthful of firm, slightly powdery tannins as the wine pulled away into a spicy finish. Needs quite a bit of time yet, but this was fairly decent without being exceptional. (1929 views)

Mas de Daumas Gassac

Producer Website

Source: VinConnect (VinConnect.com)

What wine wine with no appellation is being considered by the expert and wine connaisseurs as «The only Grand Cru of the Midi» (Hugh Johnson), «A Lafite in Languedoc» (Gault & Millau); « One of the 10 best wines in the world» (Michael Broadbent) or simply «Exceptional» (Robert Parker)?

Within 40 years the Mas de Daumas Gassac wines have reached the rare status of «cult wine» that is only given to a limited number of exceptional estates in the world.

The estate has been farmed in the traditional and natural way for hundreds of years before the Guibert family established the Grand Crus vineyard of the Gassac valley. The terroir and microclimate of Mas de Daumas Gassac was rediscovered in 1971 by Henri Enjalbert, Professor of Geology at Bordeaux University. He considered the Gassac valley to be “the ideal and unique terroir to produce a Grand Cru wine.” The estate benefits from a rare and still unexplained red, powder-fine glacial soil strikingly similar to that of the best parts of Burgundy and a cool microclimate derived from the Gassac river, several natural springs, and the influence of the nearby mountains and sea. These characteristics are extremely rare in the South of France.

Divided into 63 small vineyard plots among 3.000 hectares of protected forest cultivated without any chemicals or pesticides, Mas de Daumas Gassac remains a virgin land farmed with total respect of mother Nature to preserve its balance.

With the specific soil of the Gassac valley, a very cool microclimate, dozens of different grape varieties and winemaking, ageing «savoir-faire» inspired by the great Emile Peynaud, the wines form Mas de Daumas Gassac are incomparable to any other and have established a style of their own. There are few wineries on earth that one can point to as being responsible for creating revolutions, let alone in one in a country with as esteemed a wine tradition as France. Yet this is precisely what Mas de Daumas Gassac has done for the past forty years!

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.
