Tasted by jlgnml on 10/14/2023 & rated 95 points: From a magnum. Beautiful bouquet, rich palate sensation, long finish. Drank over 3 hrs and lots to share. Drink or hold if it’s a magnum. (111 views)
Tasted by herzog330 on 9/4/2020 & rated 92 points: This one is in a perfect window right now. Very present oak characteristics but not overdone. Acidity was medium but nice tropical notes. Unctuous for sure, the viscosity was notable and the finish was lengthy. These Chards never disappoint. (990 views)
Tasted by herzog330 on 5/25/2019 & rated 93 points: Beautiful; especially after 1 hour. The tropical really started to come out on the tail end (pineapple). I always get delicious pineapple with Shibumi Knoll. The butterscotch was clearly apparent from the start. Definitely Cali chard; no mistaking for white Burg., but delicious for what it is! (1210 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 6/30/2018 & rated 94 points: Drank well over 45 min. Partial decant, beautiful straw color, lots of mineral on the palate. Just really good. (1562 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 5/25/2018 & rated 94 points: Quite mature with not too much time left for this beauty. Initially a bit closed, but with time and a little warming, it was everything we hoped for. The crisp tropical and citrus shine through a backdrop of honeyed spices and some mild oak. This is a great Chardonnay! (1541 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 4/15/2018 & rated 94 points: Vibrant, great clean color, showing no age. Delicious with a great finish. (1565 views)
Tasted by Mark H. LeQuire on 10/29/2017 & rated 95 points: Perfect golden color. No flaws. No sediment. Major rim variation in the glass. Mineral nose, somewhat more like a sauvignon blanc. Light florals and citrus, More of a new world nose. Low tannin. Low acid. Medium alcohol. Medium finished. Paired perfectly with steamed lobster tails. This is an amazing wine. I would think somewhat beyond peak. But now so smooth and so drinkable. Ready to drink! (1500 views)
Tasted by whitmanlholt on 3/19/2017 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. This is a solid golden wine. On the nose, this has intense pineapple and honey, almost like a Sauternes. In the mouth, this is fluffy and enveloping with a nice acid undertone. The finish is long with citrus and beeswax. Overall, this is good -- it has a bit of the popcorn style, but is held back and tasty. 92 points. (1476 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 1/27/2017 & rated 92 points: First impression is very muted but after a few minutes in the glass the wine opens up. There is typical Chardonnay fruit with colza and ripe sunflower - but is certainly well-disguised behind a thick veil of oak. Certainly luxurious there is a lack of balance and integration here. Texture and structure tell me it is time to drink up. Have to admit it is difficult to know if tonight's experience depends on age or if the wine is supposed to be like this. Still a very nice wine well worth a sip if given the chance. (1517 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 6/12/2016 & rated 93 points: Frankie Valli at Ravinia (Ravinia Music): Pop and pour, needed decanting, good clean color, fragrant nose, tasting as it developed in the glass. Only mag's left in the cellar. Will taste again in a couple of years. (1956 views)
Tasted by jeffm_fla on 1/31/2016 & rated 94 points: A bit reticent at first, but opened up beautifully within a half hour. Dense mouthfeel, great fruit on the nose and palate. Still my favorite Chard. (1934 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 1/23/2016 & rated 93 points: Good clean color, lemon curd, citrus, long finish, needs time. (2000 views)
Tasted by phlegls on 8/18/2014 & rated 95 points: Another great bottle (3212 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 8/15/2014 & rated 94 points: Out of magnum, poured and while the wine tasted great it neede time to open. 1 hr later and warmed up in the glass with an aromatic, floral, perfumed nose. Awesome chard. (2527 views)
Tasted by phlegls on 7/6/2014 & rated 95 points: Never Disappoints - Very cold with some nice Halibit (2330 views)
Tasted by Racer117 on 3/28/2014 & rated 95 points: Another wonderful bottle. Intense and almost pungent nose of lemon oil, citrus rind, talcum powder; flavors of lemon, buttered popcorn, some stone fruit. Incredibly rich and dense. This is not an everyday kind of wine but I would like to drink it a bit more often!

Thanks to SD-Wineaux for sharing from his stash. (2376 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 12/24/2013 & rated 95 points: Classic. Deep flacors, silky smooth, great finish and magnum to boot (2555 views)
Tasted by SteelerFan on 12/8/2013 & rated 96 points: This is fantastic juice. Deep rich color, rounded fruit. Deep and complex. Shibumi is definitely one of the finest chardonnay producers in California, and this was a great vintage drinking beautifully. (1821 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 9/6/2013 & rated 95 points: Wow. Great nose, love the color, lasting on the palate, incredible, no oak, very burundian, clean love it (2164 views)
Tasted by carstenf on 6/16/2013 & rated 95 points: The best US Chardonnay ? I think so. Wonderfull nose with a bit of popcorn , oak and mature
fruit. The taste is just as good. I am big fan of Kongsgaard , but now I have one more fan.... (2361 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 6/12/2013 & rated 94 points: Incredible purity of expression here. Great mouth feel. Great nose. Burgundian, but with a hint of oak. (2074 views)
Tasted by winopops3 on 4/14/2013 & rated 95 points: Out of a 375 at cellar temp. Pale golden color this leans towards apple and spice with hint of butterscotch and licorice on the finish. Probably the richest in texture of all the vintages I've had. Nice long finish. Really great. (2179 views)
Tasted by Racer117 on 2/18/2013 & rated 96 points: Extraordinary. After jackhammering the gold cement off the bottle top, out pours a deep golden nectar. The color reminded me of a young to middle aged Sauternes. Sexy aromas of marshmallow, citrus, lemon oil, smoke, toast.....floral perfume... the more effort you put into this, the more you get out of it. Wonderful flavors of stone fruits, tropical fruits, citrus, oaky spice, they just keep coming..... I found this to be very temperature sensitive. Its not necessarily better warmer or cooler, as its pleasurable both ways, its just different. Share this wine, and you shall be rewarded. (2438 views)
Tasted by Bretticusmaxmus on 1/3/2013 & rated 97 points: The worst part was getting the bottle open.... But when poured at ideal temperature, the aroma was herbal, with a tinge of floral. The legs ever so slow. The clarity is flawless. The color is lightly golden. The taste, as it hits the palate is moist, followed by a great complex mixture of balance. The taste is complex and difficult to describe. The layers come out with each second that passes. There is sweetness, herbal notes, grassy notes, and floral/fruity notes that improves with each sip. It even has a hint of champagne with a yeast note. Whatever the manufacturer did to produce this gem, it is not worth passing this one up! It is definitely one to drink now for the next special occasion. Above all, this red wine drinker is glad that he and his wife selected this one to drink on this Thursday evening. I wish I had more. It finishes in a spectacular fashion. (2365 views)
 Tasted by tp096255 on 12/1/2012 & rated 91 points: ---
COLOR: Lovely translucent honey/gold
NOTE: Nose is a nice lemon curd and graham cracker with butter. Mouth is rich but light due to high acid. Loads of Meyer lemon and whipped cream, buttered/salted popcorn. Not terribly complex, but clean and enjoyable. Makes your mouth water. Acidity dominates the finish, making it seem shorter than it really is. This needs to sit for a few years. Very Chablis-like.

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
