Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 49 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Armando B on 5/15/2022: Tasted a friend's house. A gigantic syrah. Huge blackberry fruit. Mature but not over the hill. Reasonable acid. Sort of overwhelming though. One glass was enough for me. But I think that fans of the style would like this a lot. (381 views)
Tasted by Ed in Inverness on 1/12/2022: Dry, crumbly cork. Used a Durand to successfully open it without difficulty. Found lots of inky dark sludge upon opening. Interesting but not off-putting. Rich, iron, lavender, dry leaf, prune nose. Big bodied and big flavored. Plum, meaty, rust, a little licorice. Good acid. On its downward slope but only just so. Very enjoyable big wine. Haven't had many Paso Robles wines but this is what I thought they would be like. (464 views)
Tasted by Deryl on 3/11/2018 & rated 93 points: Loved it. A consistent favorite. Drink now. (1860 views)

Tasted by samiamx_1999 on 12/5/2014 & rated 93 points: Drinking beautifully now, may have bested a 2010 Alban Patrina Syrah last night... (1981 views)
Tasted by bbcc66 on 10/31/2014 & rated 91 points: Delicious. Decanted for 2 hrs. Wonderful nose. Nice smooth dark fruit tastes. Consistent tastes throughout the bottle. (1835 views)
Tasted by Kdog on 10/16/2014 & rated 94 points: Delicious wine, no decant. Ready to roll with a little work in the glass. A little oak and blue and black fruits on the nose. Velvety palate, sweet blueberry, blackberry. Integrated tannins with a little grip, mouthwatering acidity, medium plus finish. True to its score, will hold but think its fairly peaked. Not to share. (2016 views)
Tasted by plechazunga on 2/2/2014: Took awhile to open up. Once it did, the oak influence was still very strong. After about an hour, strong syrupy red fruit notes started emerging. Pretty light weight for a California Syrah. Would hold and see how it develops. (2641 views)
Tasted by jeagle on 10/16/2013 & rated 93 points: Decanted the night before tasting. Another soft touch from this classy winery. This is a tamed animal with purity of fruit and spirit. It washes across the palate gracefully, confident in its heritage. (2336 views)
Tasted by mpsocal on 8/10/2013 & rated 93 points: Enjoyed this with old friends. This is an outstanding wine. Flavors of blackberry, blueberry, and vanilla. Great finish too. Went great with BBQ tri-tip. (1892 views)
Tasted by Pbuschur on 5/19/2013 & rated 94 points: This was a gift from a friend and I opened on Sunday and drank some on Monday and finished on Wednesday. It needed time to open up but by Monday it was perfect and Wednesday was just as good if not better. I have become a big fan of Terry Hoage wines. (2244 views)
Tasted by Cattongue on 1/13/2013 & rated 93 points: Black raspberry, violets, , charcoal, iodine, juicy, firm but velvety tannins, long firm finish. (Decanted over 12 hours) (2827 views)
Tasted by mpsocal on 12/30/2012 & rated 91 points: Well made wine. Aroma and flavors of blackberry and oak with a tiny bit of spice. (1965 views)
Tasted by TSBWine on 11/26/2012 & rated 93 points: Tasted at the winery. 92-94 Pts. Powerful wine with a melange of dark fruit notes. (Mostly dark plum and extracted blackberry). Grilled meat and smoke are the predominant secondary characteristics and show themselves on both the nose and the palate. Finishes with notes of mint and wood spice/garrigue. A very dense and persistent wine on the palate. More than enough acidity and tannic structure that gives the wine balance despite its powerful nature. A great representation of Syrah from the region and very well made wine.

I imagine this wine has the ability to go the distance in the cellar but it's wonderful now. (1111 views)
Tasted by DesignChick on 10/13/2012: sassy and elegant full bodied. Needed longer decant than we gave it. Buy more and hold.
The wine looks Violet colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like Blackberry, Forest floor, Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Chocolate, Eucalyptus, and Fig. It tastes like Blackberry, Fig, Smokey Bacon, Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Violet, Meaty, and Chocolate. The body is Full. The wine has Smooth texture. The wine finishes Long. (1946 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 9/1/2012 & rated 92 points: Tasting the heavyweights in Paso (Westside Paso Robles): 95% Syrah, 2% Grenache, 1% Mourvedre & 1% Roussanne. Aromas of bacon fat, savory herb & spice, cassis and fig. Pretty and ripe red cherry & dark raspberry flavors with black peppery and crushed stone, along with a gamey rusticity. Polished and fine structure with a big finish. Very nice. (2531 views)
Tasted by Redguy on 7/22/2012: Tasting room pour. Another attention grabber. Meaty sucker. Brambly blackberries with a minty edge. Ball of tar. Tannic, dry, long blackfruited tarry finish. Ripe, but not over ripe. Good acids too. Very clean expression of syrah. Will benefit from cellar time but delicious now. Love it. 91-93 (1822 views)
Tasted by The Wine Write on 6/26/2012 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured, drank over 2 nights. Notes mirror last bottle. Very nice. (1788 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
