Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ChickenNoodle on 3/14/2015 & rated 91 points: Dark fruit on the nose. Taste plum, and almost over extracted dark fruit with some cedar and licorice. Alcohol is not too pronounced and wine is well balanced. Drinking well right now. (1626 views)
Tasted by David_T on 1/11/2015 & rated 90 points: Aromas of red/black raspberry, red/black cherry, plum and a touch of herbs. The palate matches. Light tannins and medium acidity balance the alcohol nicely. Drinking very well now though I anticipate this will last several more years. (1392 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 2/18/2014: PnP. Drank most over night one. Strong oak infuence of vanilla or Dr. Pepper over black fruits, some plum and cedar. When I focus on the transition from mid to finish it is only then I get a sense of the alcohol. Pretty big and modern. (1708 views)
Tasted by mpmullic on 12/8/2013: Licorice, on the nose. Very fruity, with a hint of oak. Dark fruit, cedar and pencil lead. Just a hint of spice that came out more when drinking it with food. Enjoyable. (1615 views)
Tasted by Red Wine Johnny on 3/28/2013 & rated 89 points: Fruity and pretty damn good. (1832 views)
Tasted by tcufletch on 12/21/2012 & rated 91 points: Wow, such an intoxicating nose on this wine. Big, black fruit, leather, slight smokiness and earth. Ripe fruit, vanilla, leather, spice on the palate. Good acid and smooth tannins. Medium finish.

This was a really nice Zin at a really great Wine Berserker price. Definitely strong oak presence but it doesn't overpower the fruit. Also, 15.9% abv is high but ther isn't an extraordinary amount of heat. Possibly the oak softens that? (1408 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 12/3/2012 & rated 87 points: very fruit forward zinfandel. plum, ripe red fruit, blackberry. some spice in the background, as well as some vanilla. juicy style, without the complexity of some top CA Zins. easy to drink, but simple. (1667 views)
Tasted by David_T on 11/27/2012 & rated 90 points: Aromas of red/dark fruit, roses, and a hint of earth/herbs. The palate is rich with blackberries, black cherries, red licorice and rose petals. Full-bodied with a pleasant mid-palate; the 15.9% abv is balanced by nice acidity. If there's a flaw to be found it's a somewhat short finish, though I anticipate things will round out even more with a bit more age. (1138 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 11/21/2012 & rated 91 points: Eric Keating Wines and a few others (Lou's): I liked this one better of the two Zins but that seemed to be a minority view. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is expressive right out of the bottle. Black pepper, black raspberry and a bit of bramble. I found it Zin like but more of a "claret" styled Zin. Smooth and easy to drink. The palate had more black cherries and a slightly candied quality. Perhaps a bit of heat but that seemed to dissipate with air. Should age for a few years I think. USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Sonoma County

Mendocino County

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
