Tasted by Bsies on 4/21/2024 & rated 90 points: I know and love this wine but this 1.5 liter bottle was not up to Clos des Papes usual standards.Tannins not fully integrated, dark fruits muted. Decanted about 3 hours. I think it needed more air rather than time in the bottle. Next (and last) large format I’ll decant overnight. (357 views)
Tasted by jamesabdavis on 4/13/2024: From magnum.
Classic nose of herbs, olives, tobacco, deep black cherry fruit.
Lovely and fresh on the palate, delicious ripe fruit framed by bright acidity, tannins there but quite resolved. Nice energy and purity.
Really good, classic CNDP. (502 views)
Tasted by IDKDavid on 3/31/2024 & rated 93 points: Drank on Easter Sunday with Lamb Chops and an assortment of spring veggies. Somewhere in between medium garnet and deep tawny in color. Tertiary aromas coming off the nose from the jump with sweet leather and stewed mixed berries. Palate was very nice with mostly resolved tannins. Aged leather, sumac, and mixed berries coming through, with blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, and a wild spice character giving structure on the finish. This still had life left, but was very nicely integrated. I don't have much experience with Southern Rhone wines on the "nicer" spectrum, but this was real treat. Like an old cowboy - Rough around the edges, but the age has given wisdom and mellowed him out. Fantastic with Lamb. (697 views)
Tasted by Qbox35 on 1/14/2024 & rated 93 points: Nose - spicy, like pepper but not overpowering
Body - complex, but well aged with hints of strawberry and pepper. Low tannins, low acidity, medium body. I had this decanted for 2 hours before serving and was a great wine! (1459 views)
Tasted by wsammons on 1/12/2024 & rated 89 points: This bottle was off - may not have been stored well. Was not what I’d normally expect of Clos des Papes (1397 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 1/3/2024 & rated 94 points: Very nice at the 20-year mark. Red cherry, strawberry, and dark plums. Mostly given way to the secondary notes of raspberry liqueur, leather, tobacco, spice box, earth, red licorice, and a subtle funkiness to it. Nice acidity and good long finish. Still has plenty of life left. (1225 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 12/31/2023: Hard to drink. Rich with dark plums, brown fruit. Slightly oxidized and pruney, clumsy. A far cry from the finesse and elegance of the 2004 Charvin. Nobody liked this. (1513 views)
Tasted by talbot61 on 12/11/2023 & rated 91 points: Fully evolved. Light color. Transformed from an oaky beast into something ethereal, tasting of cherry brandy with suggestions of Christmas spices. (1605 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 10/14/2023 & rated 90 points: From 75cl, a bottle of impeccable provenance, opened 2 hours and decanted off powdery sediment shortly before serving. Heady, ripe, Grenache-led wine, mature but with many years to go. Cherry-plum fruit, some garrigue. I was taken aback by how clearly this was outclassed and overshadowed by a bottle of Ch. Musar 1998 tasted just before. Next time I must remember not to place this as the "Grand Vin" of the evening. 89–90P (1582 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 10/13/2023 & rated 95 points: Took to dinner with longtime out-of-town friends Rick & Lynn. I knew Rick enjoyed cabernet and wanted to show him another hearty red he likely hasn't had. This rocked as expected and was well received. Paired well with Fhima's Moroccan menu. (1741 views)
Tasted by Sperls on 9/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Wine4Ever is spot on and this was our second to last bottle too. I think this could go for another 5-10 years and would then show more tertiary characteristics, etc (1450 views)
Tasted by wine4ever on 7/16/2023: Our second to last bottle. We've enjoyed them all and have experienced them at all stages since release. This one was no exception. So elegant and smooth. Lovely bouquet. Mature and quite complex, with notes of clove, licorice, cherry, cassis, mineral, olive and so much more. Good acidity and great finish. If well stored, these should still be drinking well for at least 5 more years. (1865 views)
Tasted by Birdmountain wine on 7/1/2023 & rated 91 points: Not the best year, but still a very nicely produced Wine! Multiple layers. (1841 views)
Tasted by Enfantterrible on 5/24/2023 flawed bottle: Hate to give this beautiful wine a low score. This bottle felt tired. Hope next one is back to par (1841 views)
Tasted by RojoVino24 on 4/9/2023 & rated 91 points: Color shows no signs of ox or aging. Still a vibrant violet.
Silky subtle nose. Soft fruit, pencil lead, cedar and tobacco. Red fruit/bright cherry as the wine opened up. Balance was elegant. Drink up. (1974 views)
Tasted by canan on 4/8/2023 & rated 94 points: Lovely and bright rasberry fruit but also robust due to the alcohol-level. Lovely complex spices and overall, a lovely wine. (1889 views)
Tasted by ppearson9 on 3/30/2023 & rated 89 points: this bottle is prob oxidized (1698 views)
Tasted by ppearson9 on 2/26/2023 & rated 94 points: decanted 2 hours. absolutely singing right now. delish (1993 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 2/25/2023: This is finally arriving it seems. Is still on a knifes edge: quite rich, oxidized notes on the nose. Sweet cherry fruit, Christmas spices on the palate. Lacks the finesse, elegance and freshness of 2004 in general, but it doesn’t tilt over either. Now is probably the right time to start drinking this wine. (1780 views)
Tasted by ElCarretil10 on 1/11/2023 & rated 91 points: Mature alive textbook Clos des Papes (1752 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/11/2023 & rated 94 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS: Clos des Papes (By AH): Beautiful bouquet with red berries and cherries, garrigue and a touch of barnyard. Same on the palate, some clove, cedar, good acidity and tannin with a beautiful bite. Juicy acidity, a bit rustic, and some development and soft tannin. Beautiful wine at its peak now. (2666 views)
Tasted by Rond on 1/7/2023 & rated 95 points: Very nice after several hours of air. Notes of clove, raspberry. Some bricking on the rim. Really nice, but I would drink up. (1794 views)
Tasted by MattCF on 12/25/2022 & rated 93 points: Third bottle, finally a bottle that wasn't corked. This wine drank beautifully. Stewed red raspberry and Provencal herbs. Rich and delicious. Burgundian in texture. (1529 views)
Tasted by MattCF on 12/24/2022 & rated 79 points: opened Christmas Eve. 2 bottles, unfortunately both were corked (1451 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 10/5/2022 & rated 87 points: Some very likeable aspects to this wine - somewhat elegant, gossamer in texture, with some nice alluring florals on the nose, and earthy herbs on the palate. Unfortunately, it’s also overwhelmed by the port-like flavors, raisinated, along with distinct heat (15%), accompanied by a somewhat strange tropical sourness, like unripe pineapple. Okay for a glass but not something I’d seek out ever. (2329 views)

Rockss and Fruit (5/22/2007)
(Clos de Papes) I thought was a mess. Hot, out of balance, lacking fruit..just blehhhh.......yes there was some herbs de provence but they were soaked in licorice ethanol. I so don't like CDP anymore.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
