Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 147 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by llink on 9/3/2023 & rated 90 points: PNP. Deep lemon and stone fruit nose, with some spice accents. Rich palate, moderate acidity and some creamy citrusy fruit. (700 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 4/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Mid straw. Initially quite tropical with pineapple notes on the nose nd a richish palate. Tightens and shows more minerality with air but retains the richness without an awful lot of cut or line. A good food wine (richly-sauced chicken in this case), but one would tire of its company otherwise. ***1/2 (1115 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 1/22/2023 & rated 92 points: Dinner at Irene's: There are oxidative notes along with golden fruit. Really good complexity but this was fresher a year or two ago. Time to drink up. (1123 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/21/2023 & rated 91 points: A Mix at Irene's (Irene's House, St. Paul): Medium gold color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Toffee, pear confit, white flower tones, apricot on the nose. The palate shows as quite mature, baked apple, mulled spices, saddle leather, tart lemon on the back end, full bodied. Not showing the freshness now. Probably time to go. (1226 views)
Tasted by llink on 12/29/2021 & rated 91 points: PNP. Full yellow color. Deep nose, heady aromas of honey, lemon and spice. Deep, viscous palate, more Aubert than burgundy but has a spicy lemony acid element on the shortish finish. Maybe a bit tired but holding up well for 11 years. (1607 views)
Tasted by Rambling wino on 12/29/2021: Quickly crushed by two thirsty parents.

Aroma is mature but not tired. Saline and floral, baked apple and orange zest and butterscotch.

Vibrant and oily. Cedar, baking spice, zesty lime and wet rocks. Lots of length while holding ethereal weight and presence.

I wish we hadnt been so thirsty… (1247 views)
Tasted by Schwarzer Hund on 4/24/2021: Medium Yellow color, intense mineral driven (wet rocks) and lemon/lime citrus providing plenty of acidity, trace of iodine and a faint floral and butterscotch end note. A long intense finish ended our last bottle. A perfect wine to balance the richness of butter poached Alaskan halibut cheeks. Reading through several CT notes for this wine it is surprising the high variability in opinions. Ours were purchased upon release from Rhys and kept at 55 deg and high humidity. No decline in quality was observed. (1546 views)
Tasted by jjct on 5/21/2020: Butterscotch, white flowers, rich and round with good acidity. Goes down easy. (1911 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 5/15/2020 & rated 92 points: Fragrant nose and lively palate with citrus, mineral, and a hint of vanilla which carries to a moderate finish. Continues to drink well with a bit more mature fruit and vibrant backbone. (1750 views)
Tasted by jbaron on 4/17/2020 & rated 91 points: Austere. (1631 views)
Tasted by bobdobilina on 4/16/2020 & rated 90 points: Bright gold color.

On the nose, white flowers, quite tropical (guava), and a touch of smoke.

Full quite ripe palate. Orchard fruit, baked apples. Broad mid palate. A touch of spice. Carries itself well across the palate. I think a touch past peak here, but showing better than some recent notes. (1634 views)
Tasted by theharve on 4/1/2020 & rated 88 points: lots of acid but where's the fruit? (1492 views)
Tasted by Erik R. on 3/7/2020: Golden color. mature aromas of carmel, baked peach, and pineapple, but just short of honeyed over the hill scents. Broad palate with nectarine, golden apple peel and lime zest, with some nice acidity left. Notable that it lacks minerality. Rich, balanced, mature. Drink up. (1374 views)
Tasted by Charlie Carnes on 1/25/2020 & rated 92 points: Well this was in a great place tonight! Lovely Chardonnay that is light bodied, with mineral and naringin. (1471 views)
Tasted by KenK on 1/5/2020 flawed bottle: Crumbly cork and wine while not obviously corked, was dull and weirdly oily in texture. Hopefully an off bottle. (1591 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/4/2020 flawed bottle: Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind 2010 (Chicago IL): Very dark color for its age with apple cider vinegar notes emerging. (2181 views)
Tasted by xwine on 1/2/2020: 2010 was not kind to Rhys chardonnays. Both Alpine and Horseshoe have been disjointed and very advanced. Everyone is entitled to an off vintage -- others have been excellent. (1174 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 12/30/2019 & rated 91 points: My last bottle and for my palate drunk just in the nick of time as this is now at the tail end of its peak window. Golden in color. Mature white fruit that is candied with a tropical ripe pineapple note. Round and lush with just enough freshness to carry the fruit. No signs of oxidative character but the structure is now resolving. Drink up. (1371 views)
Tasted by theRealPepe on 12/29/2019: No rating but casually enjoyed this excellent Chardonnay. (1207 views)
Tasted by gharter on 9/19/2019 & rated 90 points: There must be some bottle variation. This is my last bottle and it comes across much older than other bottles. Pear, peach, mango and citrus on the nose and palatte. Well balanced with a touch of oak. Nice finish. Starting to show some oxidation. Previous bottles I thught would go years, this one, not so sure. (1457 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 7/29/2019: Pretty good over the course of a week and still solid one week later.
This wine can go years (1633 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 7/26/2019 & rated 94 points: Fragrant nose and lively palate with delicious citrus and mineral notes with a hint of vanilla which carries to a moderate-long finish. Drinking beautifully! (1562 views)
Tasted by DougLee on 7/14/2019 flawed bottle: Initially tasted chiseled and good but with time developed a overly sweet, marzipan quality on the palate. Not sure what happened. (1613 views)
Tasted by gblacave on 2/23/2019 flawed bottle: Brutally corked. (2026 views)
Tasted by ron m on 12/3/2018: Good showing. Shy nose. Good mouthfeel round and plush, perhaps a tad soft. Flavor wise, it leads with citrus and lime peel and just a little tropical fruit. Finish is med-long with nice minerality. Day 2 - same. Ready to go but can hold. (2265 views)

2010 Rhys Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard

2010 Rhys Alpine Vineyard Chardonnay
Alpine vineyard produces really special Chardonnay and this 2010 is a great example. It is fresh and focused with textbook Alpine aromatics of minerals and ocean spray. This great Chardonnay can be enjoyed anytime but will be best with a few years of age.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Santa Cruz Mountains

Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia

Once referred to by wine writers as the Chaine d'Or -- or "golden chain" -- the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA sits above Silicon Valley, running along the craggy range next to the Pacific on some of the prettiest parts of Northern California. The area supports more than 75 wineries, despite being limited by geography and high land prices.

In 1981 the Santa Cruz Mountains Viticultural Appellation became federally recognized, one of the first American viticultural areas to be defined by geophysical and climatic factors. The appellation encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountain range, from Half Moon Bay in the north, to Mount Madonna in the south. The east and west boundaries are defined by elevation, extending down to 800 feet in the east and 400 feet in the west.
