Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.6 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ludi on 11/13/2014 & rated 90 points: Granato di media compattezza. Il naso è giocato tra frutta rossa matura (prugna, amarena, persino fragola) e note animali di cuoio, poi spezie, menta, cioccolato fondente. Bocca intensa, austera, fresca, lunga (2482 views)
Tasted by ckinv368 on 5/12/2014 & rated 89 points: A bit musty, a bit earthy, with mushrooms, dark burnt cherries, cedar, oak, leather and hints of carmelized blueberries. Still a bit tannic, but a nice little wine. Gets a bit fruitier as the palate progresses. (2748 views)
Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 11/25/2013 & rated 88 points: TRADITION! Tradition.

I can see Tevye singing it from the rooftops of his peasant village deep in the heart of czarist Russia, except in this context I refer to Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello, a firm that dates back to the late 1800s and is today still run by family descendents. While their name has perhaps been heard loudest from those singing their Barolo and Barbera praises, they are also known locally for their popular (but very traditional) Dolcettos and this rather unusual Freisa.

Hidden in the shadows of its vastly more popular cousin, the Nebilio, this grape almost became extinct before a few of the old traditionalists banded together to keep it alive. This bottling is from a vineyard planted in 1989 as part of this movement. At 7 years this 2006 is about peak and any you may have left in your cellar should be consumed by this time next year at the latest.

This is not a wine that was really made to last but rather to try and capture some of the delight of young nebbilio fruit without all the tannins. Still tight on the nose, on the palate it was a nice balance of fruit and leather with a bitter finish. Very traditional style with fruit done in bitter preserve style as opposed to a more sweet jammy-ness that new vintners so often seek out today.

This has slightly less overall weight than their Dolcettos if that makes any sense? (3133 views)
Tasted by drdebs on 6/12/2013 & rated 89 points: Big and chewy, with cherry and berry flavors. Might be fun to buy a few more bottles and hold them 3-4 years to see where this goes with some age. I'm not sure I would have pegged this as Freisa blind, as it has much more presence than other bottlings I've had of the grape. (3443 views)
Tasted by pifcho on 4/2/2013 & rated 90 points: Beautiful expression of the grape. Very pinot-esque with lively acidity and subtle fruit. Ceylon tea and black currant on the palate. Delightful with our meal at Osteria Morini. (3611 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 3/24/2013 & rated 89 points: Deep cherry. Good bright cherry fruit with some nice bite and fine grained tannins. Fresh acidity with cut and a decent length. Great with the cheese and ham it accompanied. Top *** (1654 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 3/24/2013 & rated 89 points: Second bottle, consistent with first *** (1998 views)
Tasted by Ludi on 3/17/2013 & rated 90 points: Granato con lampi rubino. Naso di fragola, viola, cuoio, amarena, note ematiche, pepe rosa. Bocca fresca, intensa, di bello spessore e complessità. (1372 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 2/23/2013: Something off; Not corked but tastes a bit musty; No score (1272 views)
Tasted by Tom Henriksveen on 2/18/2013: Tasted at the Vinforening with Mr Mascarello and Mr Bredal,

Ruby red, dark fruit nose. More dark fruit on the palate, blueberries and blue plums. Slightly herbal, nice tannins - fresh! Rather rough edges, but very palatable! (1218 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 11/13/2012 & rated 90 points: Drank 3 bottles over several days and this is definitely a funky and tasty Freisa wine. (1379 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 11/10/2012: An interesting expression of this native Piemontese grape. A powerful and raw tasting wine. Good with food. (1310 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 11/6/2012 & rated 90 points: Bright; Big mid-palatte; Sour cherry; Clean finish (1213 views)
Tasted by Ludi on 8/6/2012 & rated 88 points: Granato trasparente. Naso di uva fragola, lampone, pepe rosa, violetta. Bocca estremamente fresca, tannica, gradevolissima (1489 views)
Tasted by coremill on 8/4/2012 & rated 85 points: Smelled primarily of minty dish detergent -- whether that was the wine or the glass I'm not sure. On the palate there's tart red cherry fruit and quite a bit of soft, pillowy tannin. Nothing special here and I think langhe nebbiolo is much more interesting around this level. (1554 views)
Tasted by godx on 7/11/2012 & rated 88 points: Italy 2012 - Piemonte; 7/8/2012-7/14/2012 (La Morra): Tasted at the winery. Deep red colour. Sweet nose of dark fruits, spice and some secondary notes I can’t put a finger on. In the mouth there’s lots of structure with loads of rustic tannins, excellent acidity and a drying finish. This needs food. I have no experience with Freisa but this seems to have the stuffing to age for 3-5+ years. Very good. 88+ (2449 views)

Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello

Producer Website

Praelum: “One of the last remaining traditional giants of Barolo. Old Botti ferments and ageing. Mauro took over in 1960 from his dad and is ranked amongst the greats of Conterno and Bartolo Mascarello. Rustic, powerful coming from the famous single vineyard of Monprivato in Castiglione Falleto.”
