Tasted by steinersing on 3/16/2024 & rated 95 points: Again excellent (1123 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 2/22/2024 & rated 93 points: Much ore red fruited thasn the baron, aromatic with spice and herbal notes. Medium bodied, fresh and vibrant, redc fruit, plenty of interest with sopice, soil and herbal notes, vibrant acids, quite long. Lovely. (1506 views)
Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 2/22/2024 & rated 93 points: 1989 Bordeaux Horizontal - London (Piccolino, Exchange Square): More red fruited than the Baron this is served with. There's a twist of grapefruit juice which complements the ensemble. Palate is very well balanced and together. Everything in the right place if softly spoken. After 30 mins in the glass there is the faintest suggestion of pine resin. A lovely pair which to a degree divide opinions around the table; I slightly prefer the Baron on tonight's showing. (1481 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 1/1/2024: Decanted off the sediment about an hour before drinking. Could go 90 mins for two people and longer for four. Wonderful nose, cassis, earth, menthol, dried flowers later on. The striking thing is the elegance and composure - it’s very good. (2451 views)
Tasted by FabesMTL on 12/23/2023 & rated 96 points: The ‘89PLL was on deck for Christmas Eve but I decided what the heck, ‘tis the season so tonight was the night…
Well, what an experience it was !
First, the cork…I wrestled with the foil which was stuck, and sure enough the top of the cork was grey and moldy. Even the ah-so was no match as the cork just completely imploded.
Color: medium ruby with ever so slight fading and browning at the edges.
Nose: boy is this ever deep and complex. Textbook Pauillac, each scent is really pronounced: burned coffee, heaps of cocoa, dry cedar wood, pencil, wet clay, all surrounded by a serious perfume of dry flowers, with slight pulses of dry red strawberries and other red berries.
Pallet: weightless but chiseled, powerful but mature, with each sip showing the same complex notes from the nose: dry pot pourri, dry wood, and oh my the coffee coffee coffee.
(Additionally agree with some of the notes below, dry mint, tobacco, green pepper).
This is a fabulous wine, not necessarily my favorite style as I prefer a bit of plush edges, but the experience is second to none.
The wine is at or near peak and won’t improve or develop more so drink up, maybe it will last another 3-5 years before a final descent. 96 points. (1999 views)
Tasted by 831900_ on 12/3/2023 & rated 92 points: Slight menthol or eucalyptus, less tertiary than most other Bordeaux of the vintage at first sniff. Impression of lower acid in finish left it feeling very soft, gentle. Some green in the palate. Tertiary seemed to develop a lot more over the course of the next few hours. (2049 views)
Tasted by Jd6725 on 12/2/2023 flawed bottle: Sadly my first corked bottle of this. Oh well. At least the 1983/1985 showed quite well in my little vertical. (1574 views)
Tasted by Canon on 12/2/2023 & rated 90 points: A sharpness / bitterness in the mid palate and aftertaste. A bad bottle I suppose (no TCA). (1726 views)
Tasted by SARED on 11/28/2023 & rated 95 points: Double decanted in AM and drank in PM. Lovely and more expressive on palate than prior bottle which was pop and poured. (1662 views)
Tasted by wilhelmarnor on 11/27/2023 & rated 95 points: Drank on my sons 34th birthday! Intense color with broad yellow brim. Cork starting to degrade!
The nose is a mixture of lovely fragrancies, classic cab in the elegant pauillac style, still blackcurrants, tobacco leaves, chocolate.
Lovely firm structure, enough with soft tannins, fruity, still holding well. A great pleasure to drink, even so day two! I am glad I bought him a case. He has a few left to enjoy. With me as well if I am lucky!

PS Madame General de Lencquesaing was still in charge at le Chateau, a really lovely lady and she called Proffesseur Peynaud when in doubt. Those were the days. DS. (1511 views)
Tasted by jviz on 11/10/2023 & rated 94 points: Another lovely bottle. I keep saying this is the unsung hero of the 89 vintage. It is a quintessential Pauillac and remains youthful and coiled on PnP. It did not achieve the ripeness of some of the more heralded classified growths, but is still a wonderful textbook example of the appelation and worthy of more attention as it has aged. This bottle had a fine capsule but a moldy, completely saturated cork, some seepage under the foil, to the point I was somewhat worried. It was fine; and moreover I think it would have benefited from a decant, but we just poured from bottle. Paired with roasted lamb legs and demi glace with minted peas, pavé potatoes.

Tightly coiled blackberry, blackcurrant and tobacco on the nose, this unwinds in the glass with minimal herbal noted. Dark cigar wrapper with blackcurrant is the dominant note. Sappy but not too long. I’ll look to replace this my last bottle of 3. (1717 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 11/6/2023 & rated 95 points: Like walking a tightrope. If we stay on, we are rewarded with perfectly ripe ethereal top shelf Bordeaux with dark fruits, loads of lenght and complexity. Stay on too long and your ass falls out of the glass. This is on the verge of slipping into obscurity, but still packs a punch although a slightly less impactful bottle than one we enjoyed last year from the same case. I’ll be drinking up. (If you can find a 95 or 96 Comtesse, buy… incredible wines). (1729 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 11/3/2023 & rated 95 points: Low neck fill. Moldy cork but wine sound. Mild bricking with deep color. Splash decanted. Awesome 34yo bdx that’s just a hair behind some prior bottles. Explosive pipe tobacco and mink aromas mixed with black fruits. Rather suave palate with integrated tannins. Black currant notes with sweet tobacco notes and a mix of mint. Lengthy finish. Just fantastic. After 2hrs in the decanter developed a thinness to the mid palate, less intensity and nose faded a bit so might be right at its apogee. One of my favorite Lalande’s. (1691 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 10/28/2023 & rated 95 points: Double-decanted. This at nearly 35 years of age still an opulent wine with notable muscle. Aromas of tobacco, scorched earth, smoke and iron-like mineral notes. Present fruit of bramble berry, blueberry and cherry. In terms of aromatics the palate also adds graphite, black tea, dried herbs and more tobacco and leather. Could have done with just a bit more fruit. Otherwise well-balanced, with structure and well-integrated tannin. An absolute treat. (1533 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 10/12/2023: Served blind, and decanted off the sediment about two hours prior to service, this was just gorgeous, and kept getting better throughout the tasting. Velvety red fruit, light oak spice, aged tobacco elements - it brought the whole package. Largely resolved, so not much back end tannin, which made it all the more seductive. Quite haunting in a good way. Memorable wine. (2165 views)
Tasted by Whisk[e]y & Wine on 9/29/2023 & rated 95 points: Decanted to remove sediment, then drank right away.

Classic Bordeaux aromas of blackcurrant, blackberries, and plums, along with leather, cedar, and tobacco. Even in the decanter, the smell of the wine permeated the room around the table; it smelled amazing.

On the palate, all the smells came through, along with some new ones: a slight floral note -- perhaps violet or lavender, some Assam tea, and a hint of nutty flavor I sometimes get in well-aged brandy, Armagnac, or Madeira.

Overall, this was a gorgeous wine. My wife and I opened this up for our anniversary dinner, and it was the undisputed star of the meal. The flavors and textures were well-balanced. The secondary and tertiary flavors were well developed, and the tannins were soft and plush, but this wine was by no means "tired" or on the decline. There was still enough tannin and acidity to compliment a fatty rib-eye steak, and the wine still maintained some vibrant fruit flavors. This bottle wiped the floor with the bottle of 1983 Chateau Margaux that we had for last year's anniversary (might have had a small amount of TCA-- couldn't easily tell).

If you have a bottle of this, go ahead and open it on the next occasion you would normally open a 2nd growth Bordeaux. If your bottle has been stored well and has managed to avoid cork taint, you are in for a treat! (1981 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 9/24/2023 & rated 95 points: Rich, delicious black cherry fruit with cassis and cigar box flavors, excellent structure, ample finish, wine still tight, not as open and expansive as anticipated, probably needed to breathe longer than 15-30 minutes (1887 views)
Tasted by The Wine Monkeys on 9/9/2023 flawed bottle: Sadly my notes can’t reflect the glorious ones prior. Our bottle as turned. Think grilled raisins. (2006 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/7/2023 & rated 94 points: Fully mature, medium-bodied, elegant, refined, soft and silky, with loads of sweet cherries, currants, spice, mint and cigar wrappers on the nose, and on the palate. This is not a wine to hold for further development. Drink from 2023-2030. (3501 views)
Tasted by SpitzNV on 8/23/2023 & rated 97 points: In amazingly good shape. Ruby with just a hint of bricking. Barnyard upon opening but most blew off within an hour. Sour cherry, tobacco, cedar and menthol on the long finish. Thoroughly delicious! (2047 views)
Tasted by Jd6725 on 8/4/2023 & rated 95 points: Against some very tough competition, which may have muted the wine for me a tad. Some other great palates thought it was beating out some of the first growths next to it. I'm spoiled as I'd just had a bit better and fresher bottle out of 375ml a couple weeks prior. (1610 views)
Tasted by Jd6725 on 7/21/2023 & rated 97 points: One of the best bottles that I've had of this. Out of 375ml. Tight out of the gate but gave it a lot of air and it unfurled so slowly. The spices and structure combined with the perfect amount of fruit left for my palate was stunning. (992 views)
Tasted by Xxxxxxxxxx on 7/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Short decant revealing absence of sediment. Pristine cork. Red Cherries on the nose. Good color, hardly any brick. Long finish, without obvious tannin, darker fruit evolved with time, overall alive and kicking with great fruit, etc. Pure,, almost pristine and elegant . One of the best bottles from this case. (2159 views)
Tasted by Richard P Howden on 7/2/2023 & rated 95 points: Humming along beautifully. Delicious, showing some nice secondary character. (2214 views)
Tasted by LWI on 7/2/2023 & rated 96 points: Middag med venner: Blind. Store mengder grafitt/aske, solbær, menieraler, stor kraft, meget lang. Stor frukt, kjøttfull. Vider seg ut med luft. Tippet baronen i 00. Strålende vin og en av de mest ungdommelige flaskene jeg har hatt. (2164 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
