Tasted by bramwessel on 12/31/2023: OK, Produttori and Barbaresco character. Deep leather and tar beneath black, black cherry fruit. Tea and smoked spices. Leather! Super deep. Black and brown salty licorice. But minerality and soil. Just profound Barbaresco in a great window. (153 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 4/25/2023 & rated 93 points: The fruit is sourced from the Rio Sordo vineyard. Released only after a minimum of four years of aging. Bottle #10,795 of total 11,740 bottles. Lot number L0.167. 13,5% alcohol.

Deep, dark and still relatively youthful black cherry color with a faint, slightly evolved pomegranate hue towards the pale rim. The nose feels sweetish, somewhat tertiary and quite complex with aromas of wizened cherries, some beef jerky, a little bit of tar, light smoky tones, hints of dried flowers and potpourri and a mushroomy touch of dried chanterelle. The wine feels evolved, firm yet silky in texture and quite dry on the palate with a medium body and layered flavors of wizened sour cherries, some ripe red plums, a little bit of beef jerky, light smoky notes, a hint of tart lingonberry and a touch of tar. The overall feel is quite structured and sinewy, thanks to the high acidity and still quite grippy, over-steeped tea-like tannins. The finish is dry, quite grippy and somewhat evolved with a rather lengthy aftertaste of sour cherries, some tart red plums, light evolved notes of beef jerky and a little bit of smoke, a hint of farmhouse funk and a touch of tar.

A very nice, sophisticated and still surprisingly tightly-knit vintage of PdB's Rio Sordo. Aromatically the wine is starting to feel somewhat tertiary, but definitely not too old; instead structurally the wine shows relatively little resolution. I probably wouldn't age this wine for an extended period of time, since the fruit department is starting to feel like the wine is now at its plateau of maturity, but since I suspect the wine is not going to fall apart anytime soon, some additional aging might help in softening those tannins - although I doubt a few years are not going to do much if anything. Drink or keep - and be prepared to have something with this wine, just to tame some of that stern structure. Highly recommended. (715 views)
Tasted by Eric Wright on 2/22/2023 & rated 94 points: A wonderful surprise. Deep color with no bricking. Tannins well integrated. Bright fruit for the age. No port notes. Everything well balanced and elegant. Barbaresco this old is a gamble and this one was winning ticket. (494 views)
Tasted by palbe on 4/20/2021 & rated 91 points: Dried berries, tea, herbs. Careful, delicate and to me, rather alluring. Classic PdB. (1029 views)
Tasted by acyso on 4/25/2017 & rated 93 points: The Rotating Dinners, I.9: Produttori Normale (Chicago, IL): #10776. Served blind (but known to be a Produttori). Between the two blinds, this was definitely the better of the two, in that it had more concentration and density, as well as some sweeter fruit on the palate. I had guessed this was around 15-20 years old, with the eye of including 2000 in the range. Given that this seemed fairly ripe in the context of all the wines tonight, I also guessed that this was a southern cru. (3278 views)
Tasted by D. Fulton on 2/25/2017 & rated 93 points: Super delicious and drinking perfectly now. (2417 views)
Tasted by robs_r on 11/30/2014: Substantial browning, very tired on opening, some air helped. A very pleasent, fully integrated wine. Tannins fully resolved, bright acidity. Slightly past its peak. Drink now. very good plus only. (3562 views)
Tasted by Eric on 1/3/2013 & rated 89 points: Clean, classic. Fading color with a brown edge. Dusty, gentle, balsamic playing with notes of tar. Soft and silky. Lovely wine. (5926 views)
Tasted by Happybob on 11/12/2009 & rated 91 points: Very nice. Has opened up from a couple of years ago. Not a massive wine, but great structure and integrated tannins. Somewhat explosive and great medium dark fruit. Much like a good pinot noir with more structure - possibly like a pretty good Burgundy but with somewhat different (nebbiolo) fruit. (4647 views)
Tasted by Papies on 10/11/2009 & rated 90 points: Had at the great antica torre tratoria in Barbaresco to finish our Piedmonte trip. well into its prime with a brownish red colour. A bit of rioja harshness/barnishness but still an enjoyable bottle. (3735 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 9/12/2009: Darker than I expected with a slight brickish hue. Pretty with floral and earthy aromas. On the palate, there was a mix of floral, leather, and cherry, with dark cherries showing stronger on the lovely finish. An excellent choice with the delicious food at Felidia. (3852 views)
Tasted by 1800kidney on 9/24/2007 & rated 92 points: Lovely Barbaresco from the Produttori, complex fruits, plums and black cherries, hint of mint in the finish.
tannins are turning velvety, 11 years well spent in the bottle: Bottegga, recruit dinner (3270 views)
Tasted by BABA on 10/8/2006 & rated 90 points: Light garnet, with large orange rim. Not very intense but charming aromas of: jam, earth, violet, musk, white pepper, tar. After 5 or 6 hours in the glass, you can recognize some hint of rust. Medium body, sweet on the palate, but a little short in flavour. Nicely tannic and pleasant with food , but on the whole, a quite simple wine. Drink it up. (2040 views)
Tasted by carlwhat on 6/17/2006 & rated 92 points: good classic traditional barbaresco.... aging very nicely... (2437 views)
Tasted by 97mjr on 12/25/2004 & rated 89 points: [Garlic pizza, meatballs] Decanted for ~1 hr. Mild red fruit and anise on the nose. On the palate, burnt orange, clove, cherry burst, tannins. As expected less fruit than the '97 Rio Sordo; found the '97 more distinctive. Cleaner (and IMO preferable) compared to the '96 Asili that I had last night. (2844 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
