Tasted by MWidstrand on 4/17/2020 & rated 89 points: Färgen drar mot tegel. Förvånande pigga tanniner och välbalanserad syra. Fat? Jag tror det men diskret. Mörka körsbär och lite marsipan. Choklad, viol? Lite kryddig. Kanske kanel. Kommer bli kanon till min köttfärssås special. Kunde säkert legat något år till utan att kliva över kanten. (1665 views)
Tasted by Hschmitz on 11/13/2019 & rated 90 points: jo jo lækker barbera, drikker fint nu og de næste 5 år. (1771 views)
Tasted by djpo on 11/19/2017 & rated 90 points: Ready to go. Plenty of energy left to drink in the next 2-4 years though. (2499 views)
Tasted by s******n on 11/28/2015 & rated 90 points: A Conterno Tre Pile 2010 vs Spinetta Ca Di Pian 2009:
- Beide recht konzentriert
Tasted by eriktwist on 10/18/2015 & rated 88 points: Definitely plum on the nose. Also seems to suggest garlic. Both repeat on the palette. Tannins are soft. It's good. Best with food. (4752 views)
Tasted by s******n on 4/6/2015 & rated 89 points: Spinetta Barbera 2009 vs Sandrone Nebbiolo 2010
Tasted by dpolivy on 3/12/2015 & rated 89 points: Black cherry, spice and leather on the nose. Medium plus bodied, with nice dark black cherry and sweet red fruit. Nice dryness to the tannins, which lead into a medium length finish with a slightly bitter aftertaste. (4301 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 2/4/2015 & rated 87 points: Plum and ether on the nose; on the palate, tart cherry, plum, and notes of anise and vanilla, with moderate acidity and a medium finish. Good, but nothing special, and average value at $20. (3930 views)
Tasted by wineordeath on 11/27/2014 & rated 87 points: Short, thin, forward blackberry, boysenberry fruit. Thin and unexciting. Its barbera... (886 views)
Tasted by ksmith on 9/30/2014 & rated 90 points: Dark purple, opaque in the glass. Nose of plum and ETOH. Palate repeats plums, cherry, licorice on the finish. Fine grained tannins. Even a hint of ripe strawberry. Nice accompaniment to paste (cheese ravioli) with plenty of acidity for the food and tomato sauce. (2698 views)
Tasted by wynnewood500 on 8/10/2014: Dark color, solid medium body, dark fruit balanced the tannins. Drinking very well. (2892 views)
Tasted by Man in Black on 8/3/2014: The wine is clear and bright with a deep garnet colour and presence of dense slow-falling legs. The nose is clean and developing, showing medium+ intensity aromas of ripe dark plums, sour cherries, lavender, liquorice, vanilla and cedar. The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium+ acidity. It has medium+ fine-grained tannins and a high warm alcohol. It has a medium body and medium+ intensity flavours of dark plums, sour cherries, lavender, liquorice and cedar. The finish is medium+.

It is a very good quality wine with a nice fruit concentration well-balanced by the refreshing acidity, a decent finish and a moderate degree of complexity provided by floral and oaky notes. However it could be even more complex. Can drink now, but it has enough acidity, tannins and fruit concentration to develop more complex tertiary aromas in the next 3-5 years. (2388 views)
Tasted by Dan & Krista Stockman on 8/1/2014 & rated 90 points: Powerful - needed aeration just to smooth it out a little. The wine could easily last a couple more years, and probably benefit from it, but the cork didn't look like it would go the distance. Great with spicy Italian pasta. (2297 views)
Tasted by karl.1480 on 7/26/2014 & rated 87 points: Medium ruby color.

Classic Barbera-nose with dark cherry, sage, licorice, raspberries, violets and some coffee beans. Medium+ intensity of aromas and the nose is developing.

Dry, full-bodied on the palate with med+ acidity, tannin and alcohol. I get flavors of dark cherry, violets, dark chocolate and fresh herbs. Finish is medium with medium intensity of flavors.

Very typical Barbera and surprisingly light on the oak for being one of Spinettas wines. Drinking ok today but I would give it more time for the tannins to settles down and get some dirty/leathery aromas. Perfect for rich dishes from the Italian kitchen. (2356 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 6/24/2014: Lots of herbs and cherry fruit on the nose and it sees new wood although I don't get that quite yet on the nose. I guess that is buried in the cherry fruit of the nose. Palate is vibrant and jumpy, lots of drive on the back end. Big, yet also moves it along and is thirst quenching. (2242 views)
Tasted by Thomas B on 6/23/2014 & rated 88 points: Just what you look for in a d'asti and the price makes it a deal. Cherry and a touch of strawberry, alcohol burns thru a bit much.
Drink up, it isn't going to get better. (1747 views)
Tasted by Zoomin Z on 5/16/2014 & rated 89 points: Restaurant bottle; popped and poured. Initially, very closed on the nose and fizzy on the palate and very dry. After several hours (brought half home), a very pleasant nose - floral, leather, chocolate and cherry. Medium to slightly heavy body with a nice balance of red fruit and acidity. Lots of fine tannin, but a nice, long finish. No fizz. A heavier wine that one does not need to rush opening yet. (1824 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 5/7/2014 & rated 80 points: Second last Barbera of our collection, as part of our full immersion in to this grape. Goal: to feel confident enough to pick it at blind tastings. However, we find this grape bland or ... slick. No coherent aroma-handles for us. The expressions in Piemonte ranges from Beaujolais to massive Napa Cab and the aromas range from tiny, bashful red fruits to dark and massive, chocolatey aromas via roses and violets...

This btl has a quality of rather matured, rasiny, berries on the palate. Slight percieved sweetness. Strong acidic structure, hollow mid-palate, and ending short. Tannins are M- and don't add to this wine's structure. A bland wine speaking Italian, for sure, but... I always expect a lot from La Spinetta, and this btl doesn't deliver.

Blinded, this one has so many more markers for a Corvina Ripasso than for a Barbera...

I don't (yet) get it with his grape. One last try for tomorrow's lunch. (2581 views)
Tasted by eljocco on 5/3/2014 & rated 90 points: Bra balans och ett druvtypisk vin. Bra nu men kommer att hålla flera år till. (1928 views)
Tasted by Winetex on 4/20/2014 & rated 85 points: There was a stewed prunes flavor on this finish of this that wasn't typical of Barbera. No obvious damage to the wine (cork OK, etc.) but maybe this was not a good bottle. No obvious flaws so I won't buy this again. (1910 views)
Tasted by camben on 3/23/2014 & rated 91 points: Beautiful blue fruit. No loose ends. Very polished. Aromatics are fantastic. Very smooth and fine wine (1997 views)
Tasted by Vstalam on 3/13/2014 & rated 87 points: Forward wine with big red fruits, and a hint of green pepper/spice. A little too big for me, but ok wine for price. (1820 views)
Tasted by Der Weingelehrte on 3/12/2014 & rated 91 points: Very good, nice fruit and balance (1407 views)
Tasted by EvanRose on 2/22/2014 & rated 88 points: Opened up pretty quickly, black fruit, medium body and great with stuffed peppers due to high acidity (1920 views)
Tasted by BalthazarVonBratwurst on 11/17/2013 & rated 88 points: Definetely needs a lot of air to give everything. First very harsh and sharp but rounds a lot in the glass. Nice sweet fruits, a bit acid, round, chewy finish. (2953 views)

La Spinetta (Rivetti)

Producer website
Producer Location - Castagnole Lanze (Google Maps)

Source: VinConnect (VinConnect.com)
Founded in 1977 by Giuseppe (“Pin”) and Lidia Rivetti, La Spinetta was first known for their production of excellent Moscato d’Asti wines. After several years they introduced red varieties Barbera and Nebbiolo to the production, the beginning of what was to become a great adventure. In just over thirty years, through the acquisition of carefully selected vineyards and dedication to excellence, La Spinetta has reached the apex of quality and recognition around the world, producing a wide range of wines from their three different estates: the original La Spinetta cellar in Castagnole delle Lanze, Campé in Grinzane Cavour, and Casanova in Tuscany.

The philosophy behind La Spinetta’s wines stems from distinction in the vineyards and the dedication to indigenous grape varieties; the Rivetti family is continuously striving to produce the purest expression of territory whether in Piedmont or Tuscany. Great care is taken in the vineyards throughout the growing cycle, carrying out multiple green harvests, utilizing only natural fertilizers and keeping the use of machinery to a minimum as well (horses are used as much as possible, also useful for their nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous-rich “fertilizer”). In the cellar, technology and innovation meet years of experience and passion to create wines that reflect the vineyards and the soil, not the hand of the winemaker.

The newest addition to the La Spinetta ensemble is the historic 1867 Contratto winery in Canelli, Italy’s first producer of traditional method (metodo classico) sparkling wines. Officially acquiring the property in 2011, Giorgio Rivetti is devoted to re-launching this classic Italian brand, producing top quality Italian Spumanti alongside La Spinetta’s other already well-loved and celebrated wines.

“A great winemaker has to have the mentality of a farmer. That’s the only way to truly understand the wines. So, please don’t call me a winemaker, call me a farmer.” – Giorgio Rivetti

Barbera

Varietal character (Appellation America)
Varietal character (Wikipedia German)
Varietal character (Wikipedia English)
Barbera is a red wine variety, originally from Italy, which is best known as the second-most important Piedmontese variety after Nebbiolo. The wines made of this grape are mainly the everyday drinking wines of the region. The main appellations producing Barbera are Asti and Alba.

Barbera - The most widely grown red wine grape of Piedmont and Southern Lombardy, most famously around the towns of Asti and Alba, and Pavia. The wines of Barbera were once simply "what you drank while waiting for the Barolo to be ready." With a new generation of wine makers, this is no longer the case. The wines are now meticulously vinified, aged Barbera gets the name "Barbera Superiore" (Superior Barbera), sometimes aged in French barrique becoming "Barbera Barricato", and intended for the international market. The wine has bright cherry fruit, a very dark color, and a food-friendly acidity.
