Community Tasting Notes (average 93.7 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 78 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by mclanew on 4/1/2024 & rated 93 points: Slow ox 3 hours. Black currant, cigar box, leather and herbs come through. Full bodied, still youthful with good acidity and length. Still has many years ahead. (333 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 1/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Slow ox 30 minutes. This is tightly wound, full bodied, still quite youthful and a little austere. Black fruit, tobacco weed, woodsmoke and herbs come through. Long finish. This will have a long life ahead but I would let it age a bit longer. A longer decant would help too. (1729 views)
Tasted by sfwinelover1 on 1/11/2023 & rated 96 points: One off ($75, with a discount) from Napa cellarage operation #2. On the nose and palate, fairly vibrant notes of black cherries, mixed and primarily dark berries, anise, leather, funky earthiness, mixed ground spice, dark florals and more traditional Tuscan notes of smoke and cedar. Medium dark purple, medium+ bodied, medium to thick legs. Silky, medium and well-integrated tannins, likewise integrated medium- acidity, no heat. Excellent complexity, VG+ intensity and persistence. This came out of the bottle good to go, with a very pleasant and distinct Bordelaisian funkiness that gave it an almost baby Latour feel, so much so that even with the Tuscan notes, this still felt more BDX than Tuscany, with the sangio component playing the role of CF. Elegant, balanced, and sophisticated but not at the expense of power, this cuvee has it all, heading an almost inconceivably strong class of BDX-based IGTs around this price point including Saffredi, Grattamaco, Tua Rita Giusto Notri, LMPG, and not quite as good, but cheaper, Valadorna and Rocco Buriano. This lost the funkiness on night #2, but otherwise, remained completely on point, but lost just a bit of focus on night #3, perhaps because I didn’t decant and there was a fair amount of sediment in the last glass (96-7+ night 1, 96 night 2, 94 night 3) but was still highly pleasurable. Equally fabulous on its own as with octopus Bolognese and pizza. Feels bang on in its drinking window, but also like it has 5-10+ Years of really great drinking left with outstanding structure well integrated but still intact. Kind of wish I bought more, but have so many bottles of the others named above coming out of the walls that you probably shouldn’t feel too sorry for me for not having done so. Resoundingly recommended. (2262 views)
Tasted by Thomas123 on 12/10/2022 flawed bottle: Corked ☹️ (1659 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 5/20/2022 & rated 95 points: Big, ripe and powerful wine, with really bright acidity and finely structured, making this quite pretty. Very good. (2587 views)
Tasted by querilant on 3/19/2022 & rated 94 points: Truly a "big" super tuscan, with predominantly Cab Sauv, and lesser quantities of Merlot and Sangiovese. Decanted three hours. Dark red with aromas of ripe fruit, leather and earth. In the palate the Cabernet stands out with powerfull but integrated tannins. Long aftertaste. This is my last 2008, but looking forward to the 2009. (2598 views)
Tasted by danckie on 3/6/2022 & rated 94 points: Absolutely beautiful. Cherries, blackcurrant, soft, integrated tannins. Ready for business. But will keep for at least 10 years. (1942 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 8/24/2021 & rated 90 points: No notes taken. This was a pleasant experience. I like the layeredness of the wine with a broad array of fruit and flowery notes as well as some first tertiary aromas. The tannins are soft and satiny and there is a good freshness, although the acidity is not perfectly integrated. The wine is quite expressive. What is missing here? First, the precision is not as good as I expected it to be and second, the wine has not enough tension, despite the high acidity and the fruit might bit a bit too ripe. At the best moments probably a tad higher, but overall at best on a 89/90 pts level.

Decanting: Not decanted, followed over 4 hours. Needed a bit of air but not much (1h should be sufficient). (3033 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 1/28/2021 & rated 93 points: Great nose with lots of dark berries and wet forest floor. On the palate dark cherries, blackberries, some black currant, dried rosemary and black tea. Medium bodied with a medium acidity. Good structure and complexity, feels quite round. Tannins are integrated nicely. The finish is medium long.
This is already in a good drinking window but can easily age longer. Drink now until 2029. (IG) (2714 views)
Tasted by absolut on 12/27/2020 & rated 93 points: Nase dunkelbeerig, Waldboden. (2328 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 12/17/2020 & rated 93 points: Lovely wine in a great drinking window today. The fruit is vibrant while starting to show nice complex secondary development. The tannins are well defined and give this good grip and structure. The profile is on the lighter side but with plenty of depth. Finish is medium. Cherries, leather and tobacco. (2199 views)
Tasted by mflesh on 7/26/2020 & rated 93 points: Compared to Sassicaia from a similar vintage, This wine really did not hold a candle. However, it was really darn good. A very full-bodied Tuscan. Darker fruit notes of fig, bramble, nitrogen, slightly tart. The middle of this wine starts to show a green olive and tobacco leaf. Still finishes with quite a bit of acidity. Quite a bit more sediment than I was expecting. I can remember the 2010 having quite a bit more oak than this one did, but I think that vintage surely is going to take more time. I think this one is starting to enter a very nice drinking window. My recommendation is that this one is decanted for about 90 minutes before enjoying, because it was displaying some sort of mushroom funk that blew off with a little bit of air. (2806 views)
Tasted by runch30 on 7/15/2020 & rated 95 points: Welcome back. Delightfull. Let it air for only 45-60 min. Strong and complex nose. (2255 views)
Tasted by jocelyng on 7/7/2020 & rated 95 points: Mostly cassis and cherry flavors. Rich with very intense tannins. Showing superbly now but far from fading. (2049 views)
Tasted by champussi on 6/20/2020 & rated 95 points: Tolle Cabernetwürze mit der Frische der Sangiovese und der Weichheit des Merlots! Die italienische Wärme kommt klar durch! Mit einem seidigen ganz feinen Tanninteppich unterlegt. Noch frisch, aber voll im Trinkfenster. Jetzt und bestimmt 7-9 Jahre auf dem Höhepunkt. Sehr sehr schön!!! (1926 views)
Tasted by Swirling on 5/4/2020: Day 1 coravin pour.
Nose: dark fruit, mint, oak, leaf, blackcurrent. Medium intensity - think needs a decant.
Palate: wow, nose might still be a bit muted but the palate is already so good. Medium tanin. Length of dark fruit goes on and on.

Think needs more time. (2100 views)
Tasted by Dionysos 1920 on 3/13/2020 & rated 94 points: couleur sombre, nez poivré, fumé, attaque franche en bouche, fruité, ample, tannins très présents, très beau potentiel (1796 views)
Tasted by downcountry on 10/15/2019 & rated 94 points: We are not schooled wine people - we just know we liked this wine; not too dry (not tanin tasting), but not sweet and syrupy. Great wine. (2340 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 10/13/2019 & rated 90 points: Opaque purple with crimson edge. Muted floral nose. With the some air palate yielded some cassis and earth. Very structured. Seems somewhat closed or just austere at this stage. Reminds me of the second wine of a good Pauillac (think Pontet Canet as the petit verdot was quite noticeable. (2385 views)
Tasted by Omar Khayyam on 1/2/2019: DBYOB 3.0 The Rise of the Eternal Return (@swedish home): no notes but was very fruity cabernet nose on this with a lot of structure. Very good. (4010 views)
 Tasted by runch30 on 4/28/2017 & rated 89 points: Closed. (5938 views)
Tasted by Ianthemac on 4/23/2017 & rated 95 points: First time I have tried this wine. Fortunately I have 5 more. The Sangiovese really rounds it out. Tobacco and spice to the fore. A stunning finish with real grip and tons of ripe dark fruit. A stunning wine. (5324 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 1/31/2017: Tuesday Night Double Blind $50+ (Alpharetta, GA): Dark core with garnet rim; cocoa powder, green pepper, spicy, black tea, currants, nice tannins, interesting; solid; was on Mt. Eden Cab due to classic styling with new oak spice, from limited experience this was the first wine from this producer that I've enjoyed. (5898 views)
Tasted by Sirmika on 12/27/2016 & rated 92 points: Fruchtig, noch viel Säure (5391 views)
Tasted by S_stas on 8/2/2016 & rated 91 points: Not as stellar as it should have been. Bottle variation? Not sure what's going on... (5597 views)

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
