Community Tasting Notes (average 85.4 pts. and median of 85 pts. in 7 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by vanpe003 on 10/13/2011 & rated 84 points: This might have a time and place, but as the last bottle of the night, it's not cutting it. Overall, a rustic character. A bit muddy on the nose, though some high-toned fruit does make an impression in the background. On the palate, I don't care for the flavor profile. Caveat - in general, I'm not a big fan of most Barberas. Initially a bit one dimensional on the palate, this does open up to show some complexity and a relatively rich mouthfeel. I just don't care for the overall mix of aromas and flavors. For me, there's a cardboard oak, but this clearly isn't a function of TCA. I could see this as a nice pairing with a stew or similar foods, but on it's own it comes up short for me. (1570 views)
Tasted by kosinski on 3/16/2010 & rated 84 points: Holding up nicely. No longer requires decanting. Good balance of dark fruits and acidity. Nice pairing with pasta and red sauce. (1829 views)
Tasted by braduwhusky on 11/22/2008 & rated 85 points: Smelled of peat/earth immediately upon opening -- this was almost overpowering for the first 30 min or so. Then dissipated and the wine started to open up. A fair effort from BD, but not one of their greats. (1764 views)
Tasted by mmyette on 4/14/2007 & rated 85 points: Nose was better than the mouth, which was slightly astringent and tart, but the nose was nice. Tartness gave way to berries, and green vegetables, with a finish of woody cedar. Decent. (2261 views)
Tasted by BSpdx on 9/17/2006 & rated 88 points: Very drinkable. Definitely taste the cherries and the cinnamon. Improved after breathing for an hour or two and then really took off the second night tasted. (2226 views)
Tasted by jim dixon on 3/5/2006 & rated 85 points: 1st day: Um, this one is tough to love. Highly acidic, with a simple cherry flavor that does not impress. Not much of a nose. Will try again after a day in the fridge, but frankly I'm not expecting much improvement.
2nd day: Perhaps because of low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised. Either the time or the colder temperature has made this wine quite a bit more palatable. Not great, but now a nice quaffable lunch wine. (Definitely best with food.) (1796 views)

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Producer website

Bonny Doon was sold in early 2020 to "WarRoom", a wine production and marketing entity formed in 2018. Per a January 2020 Decanter article - https://www.decanter.com/wine-news/californias-bonny-doon-sold-430550/ - "Graham will retain creative control of Bonny Doon’s wines, but production will change from 35,000 cases of 15 different wines annually to just four wines: the flagship red Rhône blend Le Cigare Volant; Le Cigare Blanc (based on Vermentino); Vin Gris de Cigare (a Rhône varietal rosé); and a 100% Picpoul."

Barbera

Barbera is a red wine variety, originally from Italy, which is best known as the second-most important Piedmontese variety after Nebbiolo. The wines made of this grape are mainly the everyday drinking wines of the region. The main appellations producing Barbera are Asti and Alba.

Barbera - The most widely grown red wine grape of Piedmont and Southern Lombardy, most famously around the towns of Asti and Alba, and Pavia. The wines of Barbera were once simply "what you drank while waiting for the Barolo to be ready." With a new generation of wine makers, this is no longer the case. The wines are now meticulously vinified, aged Barbera gets the name "Barbera Superiore" (Superior Barbera), sometimes aged in French barrique becoming "Barbera Barricato", and intended for the international market. The wine has bright cherry fruit, a very dark color, and a food-friendly acidity.
