Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 8/26/2015 & rated 91 points: A Jura Wine Tasting (Jeff K's): This is made in the style of a fino sherry I was told, not quite the same as Vin Jaune. Golden in color. Loved the nose. Oxidzed yet vibrant. Its powerful with some mustiness but also some salinity and a bit of quince. On the palate, it is dry and slightly bitter. I found it needed some bread/cheese to tame it. Worked well. Good acidity. Not for everyone, but I really enjoyed it. (1626 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 5/31/2014: A purity here, richness of fruit, body, salty, breadiness. Of all the speciale I have had maybe Montbourgeau is the most "middle road" which is not to say anything bad, just not so massive and heavy toast, nor the lean elegance. Pretty. (1239 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 1/15/2014: Tastes like it has been under the veil. And super fine for that. Tightly knit. (1340 views)
Tasted by Beerzebub on 9/1/2013: Popped and poured. Smells like a cross between shrimp paste and mature cheese - not exactly funky, but intensely savory - along with some milder notes of almonds, honey, spearmint, and some explicit but restrained sherrylike oxidization. All of the elements don't seem totally cohesive, but the total effect is quite wonderful (as well as strange). The oxidization comes across more strongly on the palate, with intense almond, lemon, salinity, crushed seashell minerality, fresh minty herbs, and deeper savory notes. Bone dry. Full on lemonlike acidity. Light-medium bodied, thirst quenching. All the notes keep going for a fairly long finish, complex and delicious. Good stuff.

Day 2: Doing quite well, similar to day 1 but more cohesive. Also developing some butterscotch and a bit of fruit besides lemon - along the lines of apple, pear and melon rind - and the sherrylike oxidization has become a bit stronger but is not out of bounds, working well with the huge acidity and minerality.  Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 7/8/2013: Savory and rich. Very long on the on palate. Better on its own, not in a field. Better out of Le Montrachet Riedel glasses too. (1383 views)
Tasted by shleepy on 4/17/2013 & rated 93 points: Absolutely delicious. Having it open for a whole day unlocked more of the sherry-like flavors. It's tart and very refreshing, with lots of minerality, green apples, and a bit of nuttiness. (1542 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 11/30/2012: Longer under the veil. Two extra years? Delicious and savory. (962 views)

Jura

A petite and relatively obscure wine region in eastern France, between Burgundy and the Swiss border. Its geographical isolation has helped it to remain a rare bastion of traditional winemaking techniques, and today it produces some of the most distinctive wines in the world. Reds from the Jura are often light-bodied, earthy, berried, and reminiscent of the village wines of Burgundy (though here they are made of local grapes like Poulsard and Trousseau). While Chardonnay features widely, the true specialty of the region is the Vin Jaune (“yellow wine”) made from the white Savagnin grape. Cloudy, difficult Vin Jaune is made only in the best vintages, and must be aged for at least six years before being released. As it ages under a layer of yeast, known locally as “voile,” the wine slowly oxidizes, leading to complex aromas and flavors that range from walnut skin to sultana to spices and truffles. Famously long lived it is always sold in dumpy 62 cl bottle - the wine lost in production having been taken by les anges.
