Tasted by Dangotti on 9/10/2020 & rated 94 points: Still excellent concentration. Not past it’s prime. (1410 views)
Tasted by Justin B on 2/15/2020 & rated 93 points: Drinking well, aged nicely. Drink now. (1505 views)
Tasted by signotim on 6/21/2019 & rated 92 points: Still cruising along quite nicely. Delicious. (1728 views)
Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 4/14/2019 & rated 92 points: Decanted and consumed over 2 hrs with minimal change.
Meaty and earthy, with dark chocolate and spice notes on the nose and palate. Long finish with grippy tannins and spice on the finish. Dried fruit elements balance the flavor. High in alcohol, but goes undetected due to the pleasant results of aging.

Tasted by hrazdiiv on 3/31/2019 & rated 92 points: Very well crafted wine. Comes out of the bottle with a medium purple red shade with a bit of "heat" coming off the nose (we drank undecanted out of magnum). The heat faded pretty quickly giving way to nice aromas of ripe strawberry, espresso, and cassis. Still very fully bodied with oak imparting a nice amount of backbone, not overdone. Secondary elements are a little more savory, a bit of roasted meat and cedar, all comes together fairly well. Definitely one for those who like the GSM central coast style. I've had some of the 2009s from this producer which were not drinking as well, so this restored my faith in the medium term age-worthiness of these wines. (1843 views)
Tasted by PDX-S on 12/17/2018: No Detailed Notes - A monster of a wine, clocking in at 16.1% alcohol, the nose erupts from the glass with dark purple fruits and charred wood. The full bodied wine is thick and coats the palate with the same dark fruits, vanilla and charred wood. Well received by many, if not to my taste. (1228 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 11/1/2018 & rated 95 points: Dark purple in color. Phenomenal nose, if the score was based solely on this I would give it 100 points. Loads of dark fruits, dark chocolate , minerals, blackberry cobbler, vanilla finishes a little drying hot and tannic on day one, and not much difference on day two. (1492 views)
Tasted by Ex-Ray on 9/10/2018: Still garnet, with the slightest browning at the edge. Not as completely opaque as last time, which was five years ago. Pronounced and complex aromas predominantly syrah, with dark fruits, charred wood, meat, pepper. Full-bodied flavors, also black fruits, still has high alcohol, but tannins, while still present, have softened. Long but hot aftertaste. Overall, a higher score than last time. Probably at full maturity but should easily last another 3-5 years.

Tasted by TallMikeWine on 8/15/2018 & rated 89 points: Preface: this is only the second Epoch wine I've had, and the first one was one of the BIG wines they make. This one is, I am told, the entry level (cheaper) Rhone blend. So I expected it to be lighter, and as a 2010 it was also, I think, maybe a year too old. It was very "grapey" to begin (in fact my dining companion, Carl, commented that it tasted like Manishevitz - he's Jewish). Grapes, some red fruit, but mostly purple. Not sweet, but just not a lot going on. Later, it opened up, but not a whole lot to write home about. Again, I think it's just lost a step from too much cellaring. Oh well. (1092 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 5/19/2018 & rated 90 points: Basically a GSM + Tempranillo. Blackberry, boysenberry, and plum fruit. Tobacco, black pepper, and spicy earth notes. Dusty tannins, medium finish. (1274 views)
Tasted by arnold2015 on 11/25/2017 & rated 94 points: Drinking perfectly right now, huge dark fruit and spice on the nose, lush but integrated flavors with enough acidity to prevent over saturation. Long finish. Stellar (1536 views)

Tasted by spidersva on 6/4/2017: Opened for the Forstner/Lewis wine reunion...big hit (1554 views)
Tasted by Beezleton on 5/27/2017: Very good. Big, peppery. High alcohol at 16% but not hot tasting. SGM+tempranillo. Tasted at winery 12/14. (1568 views)
Tasted by LoopooK on 5/22/2017 & rated 92 points: Still drinking great 2017. Full bodied, lots of flavors. (1407 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 5/20/2017 & rated 93 points: Tasted at the winery, no formal tasting notes. (1239 views)
Tasted by BobMilton on 3/20/2017 & rated 95 points: Usually don't let my Epoch wines age this long, but after this I may have to. This was really wonderful when tasted at their new tasting room so I bought a bottle. First night was pop and pour and all I can say is WOW. Rich, full-bodied, wonderful black fruit, well integrated. Faded some the second night, so seems like now is the time for this. (1384 views)
Tasted by WineGuyDelMar on 2/19/2017 & rated 92 points: I have been drinking this wine the last three years & this was my last bottle out of a case. Much softer now as tan is have subsided but still go go longer. More mellow and drinking beautifully. Wonderful GSM from top Paso producer. Till lots of structure and wishI had a couple more. I have some 2011 & 2012. Very close to other Epoch offerings ( Veracity, Ingenuity) which cost more. Typical jammy, higher alcohol GSM but beautiful. (1428 views)
Tasted by SICILIAN-SOLE on 11/14/2016 & rated 91 points: Definitely fruit forward in a good way with red and black fruit, integrated oak and a some slight savory characteristics. High abv, around 16% and it showed. Drank along side a couple of other Paso wines with similar alcohol levels and this one stuck out the most, dropping it down a notch or two for me. Still a delicious and enjoyable wine. (1453 views)

Tasted by Griffeyfan04 on 8/17/2016 & rated 90 points: In a good spot right now with a decant. Some tertiary flavors are starting to emerge but will get better in a few more years. Some good fruits and tobacco and will hold my last bottle for another 2-6 years (1378 views)
Tasted by VAD on 7/9/2016 & rated 93 points: Great fruit, nice and smooth. Full finish (1487 views)
Tasted by millerarner on 10/27/2015 & rated 91 points: Give this one plenty of time to open and it'll reward you. (2286 views)
Tasted by plechazunga on 10/24/2015: Popped and poured. Very closed down for the first 30 minutes. It opened up slowly there were dark fruit notes blueberry, bright plum but also a lot of green, brambly notes. The finish is still a bit hard and earthy/dusty. It opened slowly over two hours, and the fruit bloomed and the harshness of the tannins receded. The green/dusty tinge remained.

I am bewildered by this wine, the tannin structure suggests to continue to wait. On the other hand, I can't tell where this is going. (2253 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
