Tasted by UTPK on 3/29/2024: Second time in 2 months. This last bottle was outstanding. Very clean and Classic mature warm vintage bordeaux. Mature aromas are bursting from the glass with cow stable, leather and pleasing funk. Medium body with underlying sweetness from the warm vintage. Extremely well-balanced. I would say this is now at full maturity and will not develop into a more complex Wine. In the end of its drinking window. (925 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 3/21/2024 & rated 96 points: Out of Mag, which had been purchased from the original retailer many years ago, and in pristine condition. I’ve had this wine many times over the years, and this was an excellent showing. In this format the freshness was remarkable: tannins have largely melted away and there’s great lift from the acidity, and almost silky texture. Lots of development with tobacco, leather, baking spice….the fruit was in balance even if it was sharing the stage with these secondary notes (1102 views)
Tasted by canan on 2/23/2024 & rated 95 points: T's 45th Birthday (Søllerød Kro): From magnum. Beautiful and classic red currant fruit and leaves. Long and refreshing aftertaste with a good depth.
All flavors are clean and pure yielding a lovely expression of the vintage. From magnum it seems to have hit its perfect drinking window. (1513 views)
Tasted by sdr on 2/17/2024 & rated 93 points: Wild and rough even though not affected by Brett. Full body, powerful; forces you to pay attention. (1727 views)
Tasted by Sticks62 on 2/12/2024: Pretty nice but I would give it just an eight (1698 views)
Tasted by essenceofreal on 1/12/2024: I've had this many times over the years. It has always been an outstanding solid A wine. For the first time.....alas....this bottle did not deliver. Damn!!!!!!!!!!

Opened 1:30. Slow oxed 3 hours then decanted an hour or so and on to the restaurant. Upon opening was tight and austere. Seemed like it just needed a little air and would come around. After the decant was thin. Was hoping was just a passing phase and would open more.

Unfortunately, got more acidic and the fruit dissipated. Only drank about half the bottle and could not finish. Continued its downhill descension. This bottle was passed its drinking window

Top one third of the cork was black. Scary. Completely wet, not surprising but still a bit more weathered. I've had this bottle for who knows how long. I stopped buying old wine long ago so has been in my cellar 15-20 yrs? Yeesh.

Have 2 more, will get to them whenever, have hopes for whatever else is in store with the next bottle and such will be a far improvement to this experience! (1908 views)
Tasted by Chimer on 1/6/2024 & rated 96 points: Final bottle of this vintage from the cellar, fortunately in beautiful condition with seamless texture. Over the years quite a few bottles have suffered from reduction but this was singing and a suitably special bottle to share with my siblings to raise a glass to my late parents. (1458 views)
Tasted by fatboi on 12/24/2023: Very late note. out of mag outstanding. (1103 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 12/23/2023: Epic nose. Amazing perfume. Baryard, Mint, ghastly.
mouth - complex fruited, grass/hay, some brett here for sure.
abosultely lovely, as much pleasure sniffing it as drinking it. (1622 views)
Tasted by seijaro on 12/2/2023 & rated 92 points: Wow, 40 years old and still delicious! It has lost some strength since its heyday but remains a pleasure to drink. There's no mistaking its Bordeaux origin. (1903 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 11/19/2023 & rated 95 points: Thanksgiving Mondo Dinner 2023 (Atlanta, GA): Non-Blind. Final cellar dive of the night. For some strange reason, my palate was reactivated after the Y'quem intermezzo. This wine never disappoints. It is always so consistently excellent and probably the best value mondo wine of the 1982 vintage. Time for bed! Night night! (2194 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 11/19/2023 & rated 93 points: A great wine which I’ve been fortunate to have many times over the years, but this is second bottle I’ve had where the fruit feels like it’s on the back nine. Lots of great savory character and development, this would still be a star if it was retaining a little more succulence. I have magnums which I retain high hopes for, and only one 750ml left, which I think is the right place to be. Drink up (1947 views)
Tasted by _water.into.wine_ on 11/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Damn - what an incredible bottle. I often find 1982s are starting to fade but this felt more like a 1990 style. Served blind and Cordier label but pristine condition. Quite a lot of barnyard with structure and tannins remaining and heaps of acidity. Just classic claret. From JY (1970 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 9/18/2023 flawed bottle: Extremely Bretty. I do like the brett on these 80s cordier wines, but in some measured volume. This bottle of the 82 was just overwhelmed by the brett, and did not manage to show the other beautiful characteristics that this wine can have. (2824 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 9/17/2023 flawed bottle: The 1982 can be one of the great Gruauds and the Gruaud one of the great 1982s. At other times, bottles like this one can simply fail to show properly. The issue here has nothing to do with provenance (Ichinose cellar) or condition (a neck fill and a healthy color), but rather the maddening variability in brettanomyces in 1980s Cordier wines - at best, adding an earthy, horsey element to an already complete wine but, at worst, masking the wine’s true potential almost entirely. Alas, this was one of the latter, drinkable but anonymous. Followed for 6 hours, this showed a little glimpse of what it should be at its debut before fizzling, never to re-emerge. (3042 views)
Tasted by merlotsmile on 7/28/2023 & rated 98 points: Stunning! (2773 views)
Tasted by toppcats@aol.com on 6/29/2023 & rated 95 points: Started out not great as even with using a Durand (as I do with all my older wines), the cork broke apart and wound up falling into the wine. Wine decanted through cheesecloth. Initial nose was sour and with the funk described by others here (again, was not promising!). Color was lighter garnet to a pale reddish into a 5mm translucent edge. Long legs on glass noted. Gradually, over about 1 1/2 hours the funk dissipated revealing a nose of secondary and tertiary aromas of savory type spices, cedar, truffle/earthiness, cigar box, mint, hint of bakery aroma. The nose is in my opinion, the star of the show - complex and ever-changing over time. Mouthfeel is silky (consistent with the typical high glycerin content in many 1982 vintage wines, medium to full bodied. This wine is not fruit forward (won't be mistaken for a Caifornia cab!). Secondary/Tertiary flavors are primary with sour cherry being the most prominent fruit note (reflecting still lively acidity) along with notes of blueberry and blackberry fruits. Palate is where the background fruity notes emerge leading into a drying tannic finish. As is typical for the 1982 vintage, the 'soft' tannins are actually quite strong, (allowing the wine to age gracefully), but are held in check via the strength of the other wine elements. They are not really noticed until the finish, The finish is long and finds both the fruity flavors and the tannins gradually fading out. This is a beautiful and mature 1982 vintage bordeaux wine. Given the still present tannins, this wine should still have many years to go. (2945 views)
Tasted by jimcopland on 6/18/2023 & rated 94 points: Gorgeous Father's Day claret. I've had better bottles of this wine, but it remains a beautiful benchmark 82 Bordeaux. Still holding strong, incredible with the long bone ribeye. Mature and integrated. Are there better 82s? Yes, but not for the dollar. (3003 views)
Tasted by MAC49 on 6/8/2023 & rated 94 points: Everything has already been said. This was an gorgeous example of 1982 Gruaud. Wonderful mouthfeel and fully integrated. Bravo. (2579 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 5/26/2023 & rated 95 points: Similar to all of my prior tasting notes, this wine is so consistent. I’ve never had a bad bottle of it. The glass is full of intoxicating tertiary aromas. I could just sit and smell it all night long. The palate is incredibly integrated with super soft tannin. A superb wine! Decanted only for 30 minutes and consumed over the course of an hour. (2820 views)
Tasted by Old Vino on 5/6/2023 & rated 95 points: Tannins mellowed out. Barnyard, cedar, dark fruit. Amazing on palate. Finish medium plus. (2972 views)
Tasted by Le Monty on 4/11/2023: Another great bottle of '82 Gruaud. Not as much Cordier funk as usual, but smoke, cedar, tobacco, red fruits and great acidity for an '82 (3173 views)
Tasted by melzar on 4/10/2023 & rated 93 points: Very good old Bordeaux, but somehow I expected better. Bottom neck fill and healthy original cork. Very little sediment thrown, suggesting a strong filtration. If I remember correctly, my previous bottles showed more sediment. Different lots? I know I picked this up at auction several years ago, and provenance is unknown. Most of my '82's have thrown a good deal of sediment and have seemed more vibrant. 1982 is considered a benchmark vintage of Bordeaux, but it has never been my favorite in a vertical tasting. '85 usually seems to rise to the top. (2969 views)
Tasted by UPL on 3/28/2023 & rated 100 points: clearly 100 Points - whaaat a wine - the nose... the smell - palate absolutely perfect - cedar - sweet fruit - truffles - very long aftertaste - here you can see an absolutely perfect wine - if the glass is empty, you can smell this beauty (3088 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 3/9/2023 & rated 96 points: Last minute gathering - Masseto, 82 GL, 85 HB and etc. (The George Town Club - DC): Expressive mature nose displaying generous black fruit, plum, cassis, blackberry, cedar, leather, caramel, a hint of green and earth. This is noticeable Cordier funk. Very good concentration, sweet mature fruit, silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, nicely integrated tannins and a long mature black fruit driven finish. Drinking really well. Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
