Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jhack1961 on 12/6/2022 & rated 92 points: Another great effort by Matt Cline - delicious now, at peak and no risk anytime soon. Great fruit, structure and balance, tannins mellowed since my last tasting ~5 years ago. (259 views)
Tasted by texasbadger on 8/21/2021: It went well with pasta (497 views)
Tasted by rbjohnson52 on 12/5/2018 & rated 94 points: This is the last bottle of several - I have been a fan of Matt Cline's for some time, enjoying what he did with Trinitas and now 3.

This bottle is really nice, pouring a clear deep garnet color, approaching maroon. It has a complex nose, with each inhalation bringing a little something different. Upfront is the fruit, with scents of plum, cherry, blackberry - intermingled with the fruit is vanilla, some oak, and honey. The wine tastes as it presents to the nose, and is full and off-dry. The level of of alcohol is quite high, at over 15%, but the wine does not reveal that fact. The highly tannic wine is well structured and drinks nicely with a medium to medium long finish.

Overall, I am really pleased with the way this is drinking right now. This is much better than I recall the previous bottles I already consumed. (877 views)
Tasted by whudock on 3/13/2017 & rated 90 points: rich, full and mature. (1667 views)
Tasted by vinorsk on 4/14/2016 & rated 88 points: A delicious wine. The richness and fruit of Grenache and but the weight and acidity of Cabernet. Great acidity and smooth medium light tannins. It's drinking well in April 2016. Had with charcoal roasted balsamic rack of lamb. (1953 views)
Tasted by schaden43 on 1/4/2015 & rated 91 points: After a double pour through a decanter, this wine settled nicely. (2488 views)
Tasted by Cag4 on 12/27/2014 & rated 90 points: Maturing nicely. Much more well integrated than I remember this from a few years ago. (2482 views)
Tasted by budh on 10/28/2014: Apparently closed down a bit. Fruit (plum, cherry, berry) and oak, not much else. Tannins a little rough. Will wait a while on the others... (2141 views)
Tasted by whudock on 9/4/2013 & rated 89 points: the wine is progressing nicely to maturity. Still young and vibrant with all of the taste characteristics pointed out by others. Flavors and structure are much more integrated now. In another few months this should be hitting its stride. (2435 views)
Tasted by Darkhorn on 6/16/2013 & rated 90 points: Great QPR. Big dark fruits dominate, earthy forest floor, oak, caramel toffee notes. nice soft mouth feel, tannins are in balance. It seems a bit disjointed right now with a little too much oak coming thru, but with time this should mellow and blend together nicely. Overall a really enjoyable and interesting wine. (2176 views)
Tasted by budh on 5/7/2013 & rated 91 points: Tasted alongside Three 09 and St Francis 06 Mourvedre. This is a lot like the Three 09 when I tasted it a year ago: Nose of red fruit, baking spice, earth, oak, meat, hint of floral. Taste picks up some plum and dark fruit and stoney minerality. Medium acidity and tannins. Nice balance, medium body and long finish. Right now, the 09 is showing higher tannins, no plum, no earth/meat/minerality - apparently closing up a bit before a hoped-for re-opening in a year or two (at least according to Mourvedre description per Tablas Creek website). At this time, the St. Francis seems flatter (less acidic) and less complex. The SF was better and more complex 6 months ago. Conclusion: these wines evolve a lot in the bottle! The 2010 is drinking quite nicely now. (1639 views)
Tasted by erb on 3/31/2013 & rated 84 points: I agree with other reviews that the wine is young. Initially tasted without food and found the tannins to be mellow and the palate to be heavy on the earth. Decanted and sipped with steak dinner and found the wine to be very pleasant.
The wine looks Crimson colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like Blackberry, Black currant (cassis), Forest floor, Mushroom, Game, and Burnt Match. (1811 views)
Tasted by schaden43 on 2/28/2013 & rated 88 points: Initial minerality. Opened nicely after four hour decant. (1626 views)
Tasted by whudock on 12/23/2012: entirely too young. The wine lacks integration at this point, even after being open for a couple of hours. It has promise, it needs time. (1213 views)

Producer website

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
