Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 98 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by DavilaDC on 3/30/2024: Big black fruit on the palate and baking spice with a little vanilla on the nose makes this wine really intriguing. Still great acidity, allowing this wine to outlast a ton of other 2010's that turned flabby after their 10th birthday. Last of my original purchase from the winery upon release. (94 views)
Tasted by Mo Maher on 3/24/2023 & rated 97 points: Wine is still young and can go for 5 more years. (492 views)
Tasted by wine4lux on 7/22/2022 & rated 94 points: Really drinking well now- polished tannins, blackberry and leather notes with a touch of oakiness. Smooth and extended finish. (962 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 1/30/2021 & rated 91 points: 1 hour decant- big fruit forward wine that is overall enjoyable but a bit disjointed still. Finish is nice and the price point is about right. Overall- paired well with Italian food and is in prime. Will hold for another 5 plus years. This wine needs food. (1897 views)
Tasted by houstonjeff@hotmail.com on 8/31/2020 & rated 90 points: Drink now. No need to age any further. (1800 views)
Tasted by garrigue65 on 4/18/2020 & rated 90 points: This is a fairly classic high quality Napa Cab. Dark fruit (but not jammy) with some cedar and alluvial notes on the back end. Nice balanced tannins with a moderate finish. Nothing unique, just a great Napa offering that begs to accompanied with a hearty meal.

Day two reveals a similar profile with less cedar although the alluvial, soil notes are a bit more prominent. (1982 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 12/27/2019 & rated 93 points: better than my last bottle - rich and smooth with black currant and blackberry as well as rich chocolate notes. My kind of cab at a decent Napa price ($70 ish) (1858 views)
Tasted by bobadopolis on 10/29/2019 & rated 92 points: Had with Miller and Bruce a few weeks ago. Decanted for about a couple hours. From memory this was a young but very drinkable cab with incredible depth of fruit, well balanced and very bold... Not bashful in the slightest. Enjoyed it immensely (1630 views)
Tasted by DavilaDC on 5/4/2019: Almost exactly two years later and this bottle is still a powerhouse. It's a little softer and fruit is more forward. The time is now. (1340 views)
Tasted by tmhouse on 12/5/2018 & rated 96 points: Amazing. Needs a two hour decant at this age. Probably had some room to run but no need to wait any longer. Chewy and full mouthfeel. Dark fruit and very smooth palate with nuance and balance. It has a long finish and is not a glass you’ll want to put down. (1511 views)
Tasted by rhanke on 11/6/2018: Went well with T-bone steak (1270 views)
Tasted by gesusser on 5/26/2018 & rated 93 points: 2 hour decant allowed this cab to open and be enjoining with spinach pie. Subtle smooth & a very nice finish (1582 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 1/20/2018 & rated 91 points: PHMG WAG: Cabs of Hall (The Lyon Hall): Nice start to the tasting with ripe blackberry, cassis, black plum, a little loam and oak. Soft and lush, the structure is subtle / integrated. Fell off on day 2, 88pts. Now-2020. (1895 views)
Tasted by awilkins on 5/28/2017 & rated 94 points: Still young. Needed time to open and still fruit forward. Good but will continue to mellow (2132 views)
Tasted by Mark Brandon on 4/25/2017 & rated 92 points: Still young, but works very well with a 2 hour decant if you are having a ribeye : ). (1950 views)
Tasted by DavilaDC on 4/13/2017 & rated 97 points: Tannins are soft and mouthfeel matches to make this silky and perfect to have just by itself.

The nose of cinnamon and black fruit are absolutely Alluring from the time you pop the cork.

You could hold it, but there's no reason to wait. This is AS NEAR perfect a wine I've had in a long time.

Amazing! (2050 views)
Tasted by Mark Brandon on 1/7/2017 & rated 92 points: For a mid-level bottle, this delivered. Approachable, crowd-pleaser, but enough going on to be refined. Nearing peak, but maybe a year or two away. (2113 views)
Tasted by csklsc on 11/24/2016 & rated 92 points: Enjoyable but still a baby which could use considerably more time to soften and develop secondary characteristics. (1935 views)
Tasted by mtnbarry on 7/10/2016 & rated 92 points: What a treat. Amazingly complete nose with aromas of plum, currant, spice and mocha. Super juicy on the palate. Concentration and viscosity support a long finish ... yum! (1803 views)
Tasted by pcbling on 6/3/2016 & rated 89 points: In a bit of an awkward spot I think. Still has great structure and potential. Most of the primary fruit has faded away leaving notes of plum and dried cherry. Still needs some time to develop all of the secondary flavors. I would wait at least 6 months before opening another. (2024 views)
Tasted by JHall106 on 2/10/2016 & rated 94 points: Deep garnet color, cigar box and saddle leather on the nose. Substantial blackberry and spiced plum flavors. Full-bodied and complex with mild tannins and a thoroughbred finish. 94 points. (2151 views)
Tasted by Wine_in_HD on 12/27/2015 & rated 92 points: A good well balanced wine with blue and black fruit flavors, oak and spice all twirled into a complex flavor profile. (1859 views)
Tasted by Wine_in_HD on 9/28/2015 & rated 93 points: Blue fruit flavors with a nice mixture of oak and spice. Drinking very well right now. (2078 views)
Tasted by haldolugr on 6/7/2015 & rated 88 points: Last bottle but been a few years since we last had one. And all I can really say is that this thing is still a baby and has years to go. Jeez - the tannins are just holding on! Nice fruit but still drowned out by the tannins on the finish. (2033 views)
Tasted by R&R on 4/29/2015 & rated 94 points: One of my favorite wines from Hall. Not quite as rich as Diamond Mtn or Segasia, but plenty of flavor to go 'round. Smooth, seductive, with no edges; but plenty of tannin backbone to give the fruit something to hold on to. (1967 views)

Hall

Producer website
Since first working in her family’s Mendocino vineyards, Kathryn Hall dreamed of a place to showcase fine wines alongside expressive art and masterful architecture. Now, Kathryn and Craig Hall are creating an unrivalled destination
in the Napa Valley—where winemaking excellence meets contemporary design to celebrate life and inspire the senses. In 2005, Craig and Kathryn Hall unveiled a state-of-the-art winery amid the legendary Sacrashe Vineyard in the hills
of Rutherford that is dedicated to making single vineyard and limited-production wines. The Halls acquired the historic Bergfeld winery in St. Helena in 2003, and are merging history and innovation with the completion of California's
First Winery to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold Certification.

HALL’s estate vineyards encompass more than five hundred acres of classic Bordeaux varietals; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.
As winegrowers, the Halls have a strong respect for the environment and a commitment to cutting-edge vineyard technology to yield the highest quality grapes.
Through meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards, HALL wines are able to express the unique and diverse character of Napa Valley’s soils and climate.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
