Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.7 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 158 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by EngrTech on 1/14/2024 & rated 95 points: Medium garnet in color, virtually no bricking. Notes of tart cherries, pomegranate with plenty of fruit left, earthy, forest floor. Medium acidity, medium tannins. Very long tart finish. A lovely wine for sure. (561 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 7/1/2023 & rated 96 points: An Epic Summer Wine Weekend - Year 2; 6/30/2023-7/2/2023 (Muskoka, Ontario, Canada): [Tasted Single Blind] This pours light garnet in the glass with light bricking. The nose is lifted and complex showing seaweed, sea spray, granite, pomegranite, strawberry, animal fur, and dried light cherry. The palate is lovely, entering on lifted red and citrus fruit yet is still somewhat structured with medium minus tannin and medium acid, especially compared to the 1980 earlier this evening. The finish is just lovely and long with gorgeous savory saline and seaweed elements. Really spectacular showing. (1391 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 9/30/2022 & rated 95 points: Horse saddle, red fruit, mushrooms, forest floor, strawberry, slightly musty, and sweat notes on the nose. Good acidity and balance with tart cherries, red fruit, and more forest notes on the palate. Nice finish. Very good and fully mature right now. This continued to improve with air and although I slightly preferred a bottle opened a few months ago, this got very close after an hour or so in the glass. (1946 views)
Tasted by lars1014 on 8/13/2022: Profoundly good with an intact bottle (1760 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/6/2021: Intronizzation Night for Rhone (Lafayette): Not so detailed notes as this was drunk during the ceremony but it's in a lovely spot right now. Surprised honestly at the age although there is a certain lightness which might have been the winemaking of the time or might be the wine settling down a bit that isn't always in these. Going strong. (2987 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 10/15/2021 & rated 92 points: Sweet and ripe, good balance and structure. 92 (2454 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 10/15/2021: Back to the auctions (Bar Bould Sud): Some darker, almost cassis notes. It's dried fruit and maybe a bit of potpourri. Drinking really nicely. Tasty. (2344 views)
Tasted by Hawkeye_Addict on 5/30/2021 & rated 93 points: Charcuterie and masserated strawberries. Enough said. Delicious. (2026 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 5/24/2021 & rated 96 points: Tasted blind. Beautiful nose of red cherries, menthol, and lots of depth while at the same time being quite delicate (in a good way). Excellent balance on the palate with flavors of red berries, good acidity and structure. Very long finish. Awesome wine, this even got better with air in the glass. 95-96, erring on the high side here. (2036 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 5/8/2021 & rated 93 points: Very pretty strawberry and charcuterie. Soft and open. (1543 views)
Tasted by jgh123 on 1/16/2021 & rated 94 points: Almost as good as the last bottle. CdP doesn't get much better than this! (1670 views)
Tasted by smcisaac on 12/25/2020 & rated 91 points: Fading but still delicious. Paired with a prime rib roast for Christmas dinner. (1425 views)
Tasted by jgh123 on 11/26/2020 & rated 95 points: Had with Thanksgiving dinner. This was a fabulous bottle! Rich, pure, complex and fresh. So much better than the last bottle I tried a year ago. I'm going to drink my last 4 bottles soon in the hope they might be this good!! (1343 views)
Tasted by pnwsun on 11/25/2020: drank with friends with roasted chicken and root vegetables. was great; maybe has lost a little but was still smooth. perhaps a little lighter than at its peak. (1339 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/10/2020 & rated 90 points: The Last Dance Magnum Dinner (The Krengels - Bannockburn IL): Magnum. Certainly slightly past its peak and maybe a little dirtier than I'd prefer (even from Beaucastel), but still so layered and enjoyable. (2548 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 5/29/2020 flawed bottle: Madeirsied magnum... (1505 views)
Tasted by wineappellation on 5/18/2020 & rated 93 points: Matured beauty with perfect condition. Nose of dried cherry, crushed flower, tar and leather. Palate of classic ripe Grenache notes, fully resolved tannins. A powerful Beaucstel now turned very charming and feminine. (1485 views)
Tasted by TahoeSki on 1/19/2020 & rated 96 points: Third of four with first two flawed but had had an excellent bottle in April from the same batch purchased and stored, and this resembled that bottle. Cork fully soaked and capsule condition issue but under foil was dry. A material amount of ullage was present but no signs of leaking. Decanted and poured, nothing longer needed. Garnet color and notes of cedar, leather, and tobacco. Fruit gone. Greatly enjoyed, a special experience. (1817 views)
Tasted by SonnyChiba on 1/9/2020: Hopefully a bad bottle as this was really tired and not enjoyable. (1779 views)
Tasted by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on 1/8/2020 flawed bottle: Corked (1706 views)
Tasted by The Guzz on 12/7/2019: corked (1471 views)
Tasted by jgh123 on 11/23/2019 & rated 90 points: Beginning to fade but still very enjoyable. Drink up. (1440 views)
Tasted by TahoeSki on 10/31/2019 flawed bottle: Opened this asap given leaking in shipment from professional storage. 2 of 4 1985 Beaucastels had leaking/cork issues and material ullage while all similar age and older Bordeaux bottles in same shipment had perfect corks and fill levels. Potentially an 80s or 1985 Beaucastel cork quality issue. I have opened others with family that have been excellent. Dumped. Too bad. (1297 views)
Tasted by liber on 1/1/2019 & rated 90 points: Last of 36, pnp, damp much travelled cork, ullaged more than 1 cm, previously noted since 92 very good or better but usually fine plus at apogee between 2000 and 2010 - browning garnet, old; nice structure to the bouquet, but all leather and tobacco, some earth, hint of violet and spice; medium, decent length and persistence, fine structure, just lacking fruit flavours though still attractive, better at end of bottle after initial bottle stink had fully blown off, drink up. VGI (17) was F+ 10 years ago....rogue bottle left forgotten in corner of cellar! (2812 views)
Tasted by drdan322 on 1/1/2019: The cork dropped while trying to open this wine bought near release and well-cellared.

An initial brimstone nose yet a clear and translucent body of strawberry garnet and little sediment.

Decanted to a light tobacco color and whiff but a persistent off aspect ... the dropped cork told the tale of a very slightly off wine that yet showed the ghost of greatness. Sad!

In all, it is not proper to down rate the wine as its unhappy aspects are plainly due to a bad cork. What might have been! (2471 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
