Community Tasting Notes (average 93.4 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 61 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Collector1855 on 9/29/2023 & rated 87 points: CdP blind tasting. Illuminating evening, while there were some nice and complex wines there were also quite a few misses. Issues revolved around either not aging well and becoming pruney, oxidative with cooked fruit aromas or just being too heavy/sweet/alcoholic. TN: Very bretty nose, farmyaard funk, umami, tertiary, underbrush intermixed with dark fruit. Rustic and past peak. (859 views)
Tasted by ElAzul on 7/29/2023 & rated 92 points: As before I removed the cork with an ah-so and it was only wet to the middle. Fill was one half inch below cork and above the neck line. Amber on the rim but still mostly ruby colored. Nose of blood and leather. Palate of red fruit intermingled with blood minerality, herbs de Provence and garrigue. Finish is bold even after three hours open so this bottle seems more lively than the prior bottle. (368 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 9/29/2022 & rated 95 points: I absolutely adored this and to me, it's clearly on the level of one of my all time faves the '89 Beaucastel. Brimming with garrigue, meats, and fresh fruit too. Perfect balance of fruit and non-fruit complexity, in a good spot now but this bottle would easily live another 10 years. (845 views)
Tasted by ElAzul on 8/6/2022 & rated 92 points: Cork removed with an ah-so. Cork was wet to the top but the bottle fill was to the mid neck, so that is excellent for 33 year old wine. Initial nose of barnyard funk but that resolved after one hour to reveal some cedar and a slight smell of garrigue and saddle leather. After two hours open distinct flavors of dried fruit like figs or dates appeared. Also a hint of dried black cherry. And the finish of sweet tannin is lovely, lasting almost 30 seconds. Wonderful CDP that has aged beautifully. I prefer the 90 Pegau but this wine would be very interesting to compare with Vieux Telegraphe and Beaucastel from the same vintage. After three hours open the finish is very nice but more gamey notes appeared as well as some bloody hints. Complex, brooding and so Old World! I vacuvined the wine overnight and found the wine's fruit had disappeared and was dominated by earthy tannin. So I conclude the wine is mature and should be consumed in one evening. (759 views)
Tasted by BradE on 1/24/2020: Two bottles. A good if not great wine, that was showing well. (2290 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 11/16/2018 flawed bottle: This must be a faulty bottle and that is a great pity; a lot of soy and celery. Soup. No score. (2470 views)
Tasted by acyso on 11/5/2017 & rated 93 points: Vinetasters: Pégaü (1989-2007) (Skokie, IL): Served blind in a Pégaü lineup. Some significant signs of bricking here, and fairly light in colour. The nose shows some dried fruit, particularly featuring some dried dates and figs. There are also notes of spice and cedar here. The palate is slightly sweet, and showing some very lovely secondary characteristics. Delicate and pretty, this is probably at peak, as it faded in the glass. My #1, group's #3. (4465 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/25/2017 & rated 89 points: Sharp, peppery, bright and with a touch of brett, the wine lacks softness, leaving you with an earthy, chalky, spicy, red berry finish. (5027 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 6/23/2016 & rated 94 points: A Pegau vertical (and a Foreau) (My Home): As it was 9 years older than anything else, it was easy to pick this out. That said, it certainly seemed much younger than a 27 year old CdP. Impressive. Ruby in color. The nose has some stink on it. Love that. Also some cherries. On the palate, this has layers of complexity. Fresh and dried fruits. Tannins are resolved. Very pretty. Many comments about how elegant this was. That may have been in comparison as it tasted more mature than elegant to me. A real treat. Thanks to Jeff K for bringing it. (6324 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/9/2016 & rated 93 points: Beautiful and mature bouquet with good garrigue, earth and pleasant barnyard. On the palate good herbs and spices, some earth, a touch of sweetness, good acidity and tannin with still a soft bite. Good length. Beautiful and mature wine and not tired yet. Will drink nicely over the next 2 – 3 years. (5420 views)
Tasted by mdvino63 on 3/6/2015 & rated 94 points: No formal notes. Delicious and ready to go on PNP, though did develop a little in glass, as well. What Cadams said. Really nice! (5539 views)
Tasted by BradE on 12/27/2014: This drank well, and feels like it has lots of legs left. (4766 views)
Tasted by cadams on 10/9/2014 & rated 93 points: sour cherry, freshly turned soil, earth and carmel notes, freshly cracked pepper, soft and supple, low tannin, med+ finish (4674 views)
Tasted by petitblanc on 9/27/2014 & rated 92 points: Old Wine Offline; 9/26/2014-9/27/2014 (The Room Off the Patio at Ruth's Chris, and My House): Rhubarb-garnet color. Briary nose, red fruits, alcohol, and a faint touch of vegetal funk. Quite warm on the palate, big tannins. Overall, this made for a very pleasing package, although I preferred the 1990 very slightly. (3905 views)
Tasted by Oskiwawa on 9/27/2014 & rated 94 points: Great stuff. Opened and let breathe for 6 hours before tasting. Enjoyed alongside the 1990. Great color and nose. Kirsch palate with a bit of pepper. This is ready to drink now or over the next five years. Does not have the backbone of the 1990 to support long term again. Enjoyed this one more today but over the mid term the 1990 will surpass it (2669 views)
Tasted by MC on 8/3/2014: With an hour of air this is very good. Not as good as a few years ago, but very good. A- (2177 views)
Tasted by MC on 7/28/2014: From storage. Good but not great, and feels like I enjoyed this wine a lot more 5 years ago than I do now - and enjoy the '90 more than the '89. But have had some bottle variation so will try another. B+ (2071 views)
Tasted by MC on 1/19/2014: this had a soaked through cork and was not representative of my previous bottles. NR (2388 views)
Tasted by tbriggs on 11/21/2013: Decanted for 20-30 minutes. Lots of earth and not much fruit in the nose. Lots on tannins, which was a little bit surprising, like it was only 5-10 years old. While not used to old (or new) cdp's, this did not seem to carry it's age well. (2590 views)
Tasted by cct on 6/8/2013 & rated 96 points: Pop and poured, then drunk the last half of the bottle three night later. 1 cm fill. Perfect cork.

Still brooding and dark, with dark brambly fruit, bloody meat, leather, earth, and a little herbal lift on the nose. Youthful for sure. It was a pleasure to pour this blind to two people who know and enjoy CdP and have them guess the vintage. Guesses were wildly off, and I would have been too. At first a little brett that blew off. Full bodied with power but no sense of heaviness, with great depth, palate presence and structure , and a great marriage of structure and balance. Deep and brooding, and more on the darker savory side of grenache with the Pegau stems adding an herbal savory side that improves the wine. Virile, a little wild, and very impressive, still with some chewy tannins on the back end. This is what I hope for in mature CdP. Extremely good stuff that drank as well day 4 as day one. Outstanding and early peak. 96 pts. (3706 views)
Tasted by wynnewood500 on 1/27/2013: "I like it" seriously understates what I think of this wine. My fourth bottle, all brought by a friend to dinner over the last 3+ years. Terrifically open for business when popped. Wonderful dark fruity flavors. Nicely integrated tannins. Medium bodied, opaque dark cherry color. (3592 views)
Tasted by jsebiri on 3/6/2012: Brownish Red.Needed an hour + to get rid of the Pruney nose and 22 years in a bottle Funk. But when it did , the wine had decent fruit , secondary flavors that remained did not have the off-putting effect they had initially. Sweetness was nice. Very enjoyable. (4535 views)
Tasted by BradKNYC on 12/28/2011: TN: Eric Levine comes to NYC. (Beacon Restaurant): Shows a lot of sweet raspberries on the nose and palate, but without the vibrancy of youth. Instead it has a delicious aged patina to it that melds well with the sweet spices and game notes. This bottle is showing quite grenachey, with some burnt rubber showing and its a bit more chunky in the middle than other bottles I've had. That said, the structure provides a nice framework and there's good length to the fruit. A/A-. (4960 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/27/2011 & rated 87 points: Rhones 20+ Years Old (Western Chicago IL Suburbs): Tasted blind. Big, fat fruit, very lush and forward. Came across to the whole group as more modern than the normally rustic style I expect and know from Pegau. Very surprised when this was unveiled. (4565 views)
Tasted by wynnewood500 on 9/5/2011: Another great bottle of Pegau! Left open in the bottle for a half an hour or so. Nice medium body, fruit, and a little tannic backbone. (3839 views)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
